welcome!

Welcome to Umeå! As a new student and maybe the first time actually living away from home and your parents, to make it easier here is a small guide to some ways you can find an apartment or student room while studying at our university.

accommodation

  • Bostaden.se
  • Blocket.se

At Bostaden you sign up to a queue system where you collect days and are able to pick and choose from the rooms and apartments they offer. It is very easy to get a student room whilst the apartments oſten require a couple of years in the queue system. If you sign up to a student room you are able to keep your queue spot looking for other apartments during your time here. So go and sign up as soon as possible! It is free of charge.
As everywhere else in Sweden, Blocket is the place to go when you are looking for pretty much anything, furniture? Blocket. A job? Blocket. Or maybe a place to live? Blocket. You can either search through the already existing rooms and apartments that are up for rent or you may post an ad about yourself and what kind of place you are looking for and let potential landlords find you!

  • Balticgruppen.se
  • Facebook groups

At Balticgruppen you can sign up. However this works in a different way, first come first served. When they post a new apartment you are able to sign up to the apartment and if you are the lucky first five you are asked if you’d like to rent it, in the order, you signed up to the specific apartment.
As you will or maybe already have noticed Facebook is used a lot at our university, all the events, and what is going on in HHUS you are able to find on Facebook. However, you may also find a place to live by looking up “Umeå Studentbosstad” or “Lägenheter i Umeå” and many other groups, just search for Umeå and any synonym for an apartment or living on Facebook. ere are oſten available apartments up already, but if you can’t seem to find anything that falls into your needs you can always put up an ad and picture of yourself and let the apartment find you! Here you can find collective accommodations and live with other students.
Balticgruppen offers the Tviste apartments which are very attractive for university students, so sign up and keep updating the site to get a place to live.

4

Now that you’ve hopefully settled in, you’ll need to find furniture. ere are Facebook groups and Blocket to help you get away cheap with everything from a bed to a table, just look up “KÖP och SÄLJ Umeå” and you’ll find many different groups to get you settled further. If you still can’t seem to find what you are looking for IKEA is always a poor student’s best friend.

literature

We know that as a new student you might be worried about the expensive course literature you got a list of a while ago, however we are here to aid you with that as well!

HHUS Book Swap

A Facebook group where students sell them or trade their books from previous courses. Here you can find pretty much all the books you need, and while you can also buy them new at Amazon or Adlibris if you use the HHUS Book Swap you might also be able to get the previous owners notes from the course if you ask nicely.

Campusbokhandeln

Campus bokhandel, a book shop located in Universum. Here you can find a lot of the course literature second hand.

And at last, you always have your wonderful
Faddrar, they no longer need their books from the previous courses and therefore oſten will be glad to sell them to you for a good price, this way you’ll get pretty much all the books you need for the upcoming year!

Info about hhus

HHUS is the volunteer association for all students at the Umeå School of Business, Economics and Statistics. We are a nonpolitical, non-union, and non-religious association, with the purpose of handling and supporting our members’ interests. We work towards upholding a good relationship between our members, our university and the business sector.

HHUS is one of the biggest associations on campus with over 45 students that are engaged each year! By being a part of the management group or the board, you not only gain useful knowledge for your future career but also get the chance to get to know amazing people. Who knows, maybe you will meet friends for life.

Briefly explained, the management is divided into different committees (more about them below). e head of each committee together with a presidium consisting of president, vice president and board advisor together form the board of HHUS. is might be a little tricky to understand in the beginning but don’t worry, if you have any questions there are plenty of people to ask.

You can find HHUS on the internet or on our social media!

traditions

HHUS has several traditions that we value incredibly highly. First day, you will get your Rookie package which include one of our most valuable books, the songbook. at’s where you’ll find the economists’ most beloved visors, rhymes and songs. (Hint: check out the digital version of the songbook on the website and find the most traditional songs:
VD-låten, Spritbolaget, Strejk på Pripps, Ålidhome).

Something you will most likely learn the first few days with your faddrar is the beloved Lambo song. is means that you, as quickly as possible, should drink up what’s in your glass before your friends have finished the song (prepare with many plastic glasses so you can easily pour over your freshly filled drink or have a glass of water on the side of so you can show off your skills).

Insparken, HHUS and student life stand for the community, to get to know new and old students to make sure that your time here at Umeå University will be the absolute best. See you during insparken where we will sing all these songs together and teach you ”the HHUS way”...

the committees

Presidium

e Presidium is the strategic organ of the association. It aims to make sure that the association has a long-term view, and that the decisions are sustainable for the future of HHUS. It’s their responsibility to ensure that HHUS continues to be an including, active and flourishing organization – today, tomorrow and for the next generation of

members.

Economy committee

e main goal for the Economy Committee is to be in charge of
HHUS’s economy. eir main tasks are accounting, financial statement, annual reports, and tax return and other economic administration. e economy committee also act as advisors to other committees when they need financial advice. In this committee you can also find Finansmästeriet. eir main task is to promote the interest in finance amongst the students within the association and to actively manage a part of HHUS’s capital.

marketing committee

e marketing committee is responsible for creating HHUS and the E-pubs communication towards members and external partners. ey are managing our website HHUS.se, LinkedIn, HHUS’ and the E-pub’s Instagram, HHUS’ and the E-pub’s Snapchat, HHUS’ and the E-pub’s Facebook page, Bonsai campus, our student radio Ekonomlivet and last but not least our student magazine Ekbladet.

business committee

e Business committee’s work is to create opportunities where businesses and organizations can meet HHUS members. rough activities, we want to create natural encounters for both local and national Swedish businesses which serve as a bridge between student life and future of work. is is done through company presentations, career fairs, case competitions, social events, etc.

8

Social committee

e main goal for the Social committee is to ensure that our members time during their studies is enriched by camaraderie, togetherness and a great social era. ey work with creating social meeting places where members are able to interact and enjoy the life of a student. e social committee do this through various ways; by arranging traditional ”Sittings”, through sports events, musical activities and much, much more!

Pub committee

e main goal for the Pub committee is to run our beloved E-pub.
HHUS, along with JF-Umeå and fIEzta, run the E-pub as a legit student pub and it is the obvious go-to spot for the members of the association, however, all students over 18 with an Umeå Student union identification are more than welcome.

education committee

e main goal for the Education Committee is to be in charge of overseeing and improving your education! ey work to uphold the quality of our education at Umeå School of Business and Economics. A vital part are the student representatives which are present in all classes. It is you, the student, who can influence your own, and your colleagues’, study time by highlighting your opinions so don’t forget to

fill out course evaluations and to use SpeakUp!

How can i get involved?

Every year around november there is a big election within HHUS where the whole management group will be replaced with new students! When choosing how to engage it would be good to consider two aspects; what your interests are and how much time you are willing to spend on it. Being part of the board means you have the most responsibility and therefore it takes more time and management is a bit less to do and more niche. If you feel that you want to be engaged but to start off light you should consider being a mästerist! is means you have less work and in general you are basically a helping hand to one of the management positions. ere will be a presentation aſter the inspark to make it even more clear for you what options you have and how to apply.

E-pub

epuben e-puben

e pub also has exampartyies for all students. ese are aligned with all economic students exams to give everyone a chance to celebrate that the exam has passed. During examparties you will get a chance to let loose to the E-Pubs favorites, like “När vindarna viskar mitt namn” and “Genom eld och vatten”, and get a chance to meet all your friends.
Our student union HHUS runs a pub named E-Puben. It is a voluntary organisation by students for students. is means that everything the E-Pub does and stands for is done by people in HHUS. It could be everything from events and sales to booking of security and contact with the police. You will be introduced to the E-Pub shortly aſter your arrival to Umeå since it’s the place where us economics will spend much of our time.
A newly introduced concept for 2020 is
TTT (taco-tequila-thursday). Some thursdays during the semester the pub will serve tacos and give students a feeling of being in Mexico.
e E-Pub has many events during the terms. Every friday the pub is open for EPP (a swedish shortening of aſter-studies-pub) where students can celebrate the end of a week containing studies and welcome the weekend. It is important to be there on time since there are not enough pitchers for everyone and the pub can quickly become full.

Featuring alumni news, student spotlights, upcoming events and volunteer opportunities. MAY 2017 UC Alumni Celebrate 50 Years of Exchange! (Jill Gullstrand, Jim Halperin (1969-70), Rima and Harlan (1966-67) Strauss, Gerrit (1969-70) and Carole Buddingh) Last month UCEAP traveled to Sweden to celebrate our 50 year anniversary of student exchange with Lund University. Alumni, faculty, staff, and friends joined us for three days of events in commemoration of our historic partnership. Check out our photo album here. We started our celebration with a private tour of the Lund University campus with Fredrik Tersmeden, Lund University archivist and historian, followed by a traditional Swedish fika coffee break and cinnamon rolls. After the fika, current UCEAP students invited alumni to tour their dormitories, including the exact dorms of a few alumni who took photos and relived moments of their study abroad experience. A Nordic Noir film lecture by Olof Hedling, Associate Professor in Film Studies at Lund University, was held in the afternoon, followed by a reception hosted by Lund University at the magnificent Bishop's House, in celebration of our 50th and Lund's 350th anniversary. UCEAP Students Lead Dorm Tours ( current UC students Michelle Guzman, Margaret McNeely, Aliya Helling, Michael Kraut, and Jessica Bratulina ) The next day started early with a focus group of our reciprocity alumni (Lund students who studied at UC) and an Alumni Roundtable where alumni were invited to share stories about the impact of their exchange. Alumni speakers included Harlan Strauss (1966-67), Jean Givens (1967-68), Meghan Cridland (2008-09) and was moderated by UCEAP Associate Dean Hsiu-Zu Ho.

A teaching experiment was done to see whether scaffolding, a process where the teacher shows the overall structure of e.g. a text, can help students with reading and writing difficulties improve their writing in English. Ten students in the 7th grade participated in the study, as well as four English teachers in a secondary school in Sweden. The students who participated were asked to write two texts in English. Before writing the first text, the students were told that they were going to write a fairy tale, but they were not given any other guidelines. Prior to writing the second text, two lessons of scaffolding were conducted.

    My Exchange Evaluation

My Exchange Evaluation Basic Information Host University Lund University Semester & Year of Exchange S1 2019 Otago degree(s) BASc Major(s) Environmental Management and Politics Academics/ course load Which papers did you take whilst on exchange? Course title Language of Otago equivalent Otago instruction credit value Swedish Politics: Past and Present EN 200 level politics 18 The Religious Impact of Migration in EN 100 level arts unspecified 18 Sweden History of the Holocaust EN 100 level arts unspecified 18 Critical Animal Studies EN 100 level arts unspecified 18 Any comments about these papers? I really enjoyed the first three listed, they were informative about European and Swedish history as well as the current state of Sweden. How did the academic experience/ workload/ style of teaching differ from Otago? Unlike Otago you only do two courses at a time, so it works in two terms within a semester. There is no ‘set’ midterm break, some people get a break between their first lot of courses and their second lot and others do not. I only took courses designed for exchange students so had a lower workload, both in contact hours and expected work than other people I know. My courses had few compulsory classes and most of the content was available online. Throughout the time you are taking a course there tend to be compulsory assignments which are only graded for pass/fail with your final grade coming from an essay, take home exam or exam. You have to complete the assignments to pass even though they aren’t graded. Accommodation What accommodation did you stay in? What were the pros and cons of your accommodation? I was not accepted into LU or AFB accommodation, I was initially really annoyed about this but now am so glad it happened! Finding accommodation in Lund is super stressful, especially from the other side of the world! LU and AFB accommodation works as lotteries so there is no way to increases your chances with them!! I ended up staying in a place called The New Greenhouse, I was told about it by another exchange student.

Many ESTIEMers enjoyed this unique chance and through this booklet, we aim to immortalise this term’s seminars and disseminate the great experience we had during this year. While reading these pages, you will explore the experiences of the participants and you will be a part of the academic and cultural sides of their events. • Branding at Nation: the Student and Volunteers´ Perceptions of Image/Identity in the Swedish Student Nations

Branding at Nation: the Student and Volunteers´ Perceptions of Image/Identity in the Swedish Student Nations

Branding at Nation: The student and volunteers´ perceptions of image/identity in the Swedish student Nations Master Thesis 2011-05-21 Authors: Hanat Herzi Dorreh Tomas Hromjak ABSTRACT The purpose of this study is to analyze and understand how branding, image and identity play a role for Nations both to attract and maintain student, customers and motivate volunteers. This will be analyzed by means of the following research questions: “how do the Nations brand themselves?” and “how do members and volunteers of nations understand the Nation’s image and how do they respond to it?” This study strives to contribute to the theoretical area that deals with branding in non-profit organizations. Particularly, this research aspires to analyze how these specific nonprofit organizations brand themselves and how students´ perceive their brand. An interpretative interview approach was used to conduct this study. It is a qualitative study, which analyzes interviews with participants, who are active members in Nations. In addition to interviews, also observations and documents are utilized for analysis. The findings suggest that Nations, which consider branding positive, are those which utilize branding activities the most. Moreover, the study points at the dilemma of exclusivity and inclusivity branding. The implication suggests that further research should be elaborated on the matter of inclusivity and branding.
