No suoh list was brough.t out in 1901. In 1911 Village Direotories were prepared for all distri1ts, but oould be published only for thirteen on aooount of the out break of the First World War. At the 1921 Census they were published for all distriots in the form of Distriot Census Statistics. In 1931 they were oompiled for all distriots, but were not published owing to financial stringency. leading to loss of valuable data. At the 1941 Census even though restrioted tabulation was undertaken on aocount of the Seoond World War. yet the utility of Distriot Oensus Statistios was reoognized and they were published. DISTRICT CENSUS HANDBOOK 1951 ALIGARH DISTRICT I' ' ~~------- I II f j' CenS\lS of India, 1951 ~ .DISTRICT -- HANDBOOK U'ITAR P RADESH 6-ALIGARH DISTRICT •• ALLAHABAD: .. SUPERINTENDENT. PRINTING l\.ND STATIONERY, UTTAR PRA DESH, INDIA ~. S'-1L._ ,_ H 1954 95., FOREWORD Several States, including Uttar Pradesh, have been publishing village statistfcl by districts at each census. In 1941 they were published in U. P. under the titk,''-Oistrict Census Statistics"with a separate volume for each district. In the 1951 census, when the tabulation has been more elaborate than ever in view ofthe requirements of the country, the district-wise volume has been expanded into a "District Census Handbook", which now contains the District Census Tables (furnishing data with break-up for census tracts within the district), the District Index of Non-agricultural Occupations, agricul. tural statistics from 1901-02 to 1950-51 and other miscellaneous statistics in addition to the usual village population statistics. The village population statistics also are given in an elaborate form giving the division of the population among eight livelihood classes and other details. 2. It may be added here that a separate set of district-wise volumes giving only population figures of rural areas by villages and of urban areas by wards and mohallas and entitled "District Population Statistics", has already been published. This separate series was necessitated by the urgent requirements of the U. P. Government for elections to local bodies. The printing of the District Census Handbooks involves colossal work and is bound to take some time. R.AJESHW ARI PRASAD, I.A.S., RAMPUR: Superintendent, Census Operations, June 30.

Journal of Urban and Regional Analysis, vol. IV 2, 2012, p. 129 -148 SPATIAL MODELLING OF URBAN GROWTH AND URBAN INFLUENCE: APPROACH OF REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT IN DEVELOPING ECONOMY (INDIA) Md. Julfikar ALI 1), Deepika VARSHNEY2) 1) Aliah University, Kolkata, India, 2) Aligarh Muslim University, Aligarh, India Abstract: Urbanization and regional development are closely associated. Allocation of higher and lower order facilities and specialization of business influence urban growth which diffuses its benefits to the surrounding countryside. Subsequently, socio-economic development of the region comes into being. The continuous increase of urban size can not be sustained rather declining growth will certainly set in long run. Optimum level of its growth depends on the capacity of an urban centre to provide required facilities to the people in fair manner. Hierarchical growth of urban centres in association with location of civic amenities induces regional development in hierarchical dimension which is the common problem in developing economy. Subsequently, few of the urban centres are having large number of facilities while others are lacking corresponding to their population size. Formulation of pragmatic planning model is the rescue of wiping out such problems. It is an attempt to analyze the hierarchical growth of urban centres associated with their functional potentiality and diffusion of urban developmental impulses to the surrounding rural part. Further, it proposes a model for developing economy like India to solve the problem of regional variations of development. Besides, it examines the adequacy and inadequacy of facilities in the urban centres and puts forward planning recommendations, so that a balanced regional development would be achieved by not leaving any rural part out of the zone of functional influence of urban centre.
