IOTA ADVISORS’ UPDATE It has been an interesting and challenging fall quarter. The men of IOTA have risen to the challenge. We have initiated 16 new brothers in a mostly virtual and man-on-man recruitment process. The chapter is hoping to initiate more brothers later this quarter and then have recruitment in both winter and spring quarters with a goal of having at least 30 new brothers join our ranks this school year. Unfortunately, we did not have brothers return to DU this quarter and had some brothers leave us for finan - cial and other reasons. We now have over 80 men in the chapter with hopes of being near 100 by the end of spring quarter. Due to COVID-19 we had to make all rooms in the chapter house singles this school year and only allow those living in the chapter house to eat meals in the house. We have instituted enhance cleaning and safety protocols. We did have some brothers living in the chapter house come down with COVID-19. They were temporarily moved into quarantine and the other non-infected brothers moved into isolation. Thankfully no one was seriously ill. The University has been providing the students with regular access to testing. We still are having some brothers infected. DU recently went to all virtual classes and the student body will be leaving campus November 20th with all finals online. Programming has been impacted. Presently we can only have groups of five men and under at any event, earlier in the quarter we could have ten. As you might imagine this has presented challenges, but the leadership has done a great job of keeping the men engaged. We are hopeful in the months to come social conditions will improve so we may resume more traditional programming, but uncertainty remains. Hopefully, between a vaccine and therapeutics school life will return to ‘normal’ sometime in 2021. The Reunion Planning Committee will be meeting virtually in early January to further discuss plans for our now 101st Chartering Anniversary Celebration for Sept. 23-26, 2021. Stay tuned and see pg. 13 for details. We want to thank Alec Hurst and his fellow officers and chairmen for their efforts during fall quarter. I want to thank my fellow advisors and house corporation directors especially Gary Berz for their assis - tance and support. Also, a shout out to DU for their support. As always we thank Don Reisfeld for his containing efforts to make IOTAs publications the fraternity’s best. To brother Jackson Spear, who is our House Director this year, huge thanks for dealing with this year’s challenges. Thankfully due to our size and the strength of our chapter, we shall survive and look forward to better days ahead. Be well and stay safe. Message from International President ZBT Fraternity Dear Brothers, I hope that you and yours remain safe and well during these difficult times. For our Fraternity, the challenges of the pandemic are equaled by its opportunities. If wisdom is alone gained through struggle, we are becoming wiser by the day, as the International Fraternity and our Chapters learn to effectively recruit, educate, program for, bond with, appreciate, and recognize Brothers in new ways. As we have been driven physically apart, we have adapted to strengthen the bonds of Brotherhood. At the outset of the pandemic, the Headquarters Staff and volunteer leadership acted quickly to reduce expenses and enact policies to protect the health and safety of our Brothers, while continuing to provide programming and services. Our Chapters and Brothers similarly adapted, many excelling at virtual recruitment and programming, permitting us to exceed our pandemic projections for returning brothers and putting us on track to exceed our pandemic projections for recruitment as well. As always, Iota is among those Chapters leading the way. We are refocusing on our unique origin story and special purpose. Zeta Beta Tau grew in response to the exclusionary policies of organizations at the time, which would not admit members of the Jewish faith. Our Brotherhood thrived as it created a space for those men and, eventually, all men of good character. As such, our Brotherhood is not an heir to injustice, but a response to it. We must remind others of this whenever and wherever possible, by our words and deeds. That message, and our programming to combat hate, provide opportunities for Brothers from margin - alized communities to discuss common experiences, and our efforts to end sexual violence on cam - pus, is rooted in decades-old organizational values. Now more than ever, those values are sought by college campuses and undergraduates. Thus, while the current environment may be unfavorable to the average fraternity, it provides a Brotherhood like ours an amazing opportunity. The commitment to our values, as they manifest in our programming, conduct, and messaging, have led to expansion successes during the pandemic. We initiated 27 new Brothers at Emory and 15 at the University of California at Berkeley. We have been approved to return to the University of Kentucky next year. Serious challenges remain, both pandemic-related and otherwise. We will meet those challenges like we have met many before, united in adherence to our watchwords of Justice and Brotherly Love. THE ALUMNI AND PARENT NEWSLETTER | IOTA C HAPTER | Z ETA BETA TAU | U NIVERSITY OF DENVER Richard ‘Dick’ S. Simon | 1921-2020 Passes to the Chapter Eternal

Shy just six months of his 100 birthday, Richard (Dick) S. Simon, Phi (University of Michigan) 1943, has left us for the Chapter Eternal and the embrace of his beloved Nancy. His moving on leaves us for a space of time in the sad, dark emptiness occa - sioned by the passing of a friend. Whatever other connections we might have enjoyed with Dick, it’s the loss of that rarest of gifts, his friendship, that leaves us most desolate now. But when the mourning’s done and our grief turns to fond memories, his good counsel and gratitude for his life, we’ll tell his story whenever he comes to mind. Each time we do we’ll place another stone upon his marker. Everyone knew Dick Simon was good company. He would enter a room with a story to tell, a hearty laughter at one of yours and if circumstance called, a listening ear and an empathetic heart. He held the secret of mutual trust, which endeared him to many: give much, ask for little, forget the bad, remember the good and when needed, be there, no excuses. To be in his circle was comfort - ing, ennobling and fun. He was a ‘happy warrior’ for whatever his cause or relationship. Even in tough times with hard choices to be made, Dick had the skill of making one and all feel as though they were in it together; a band of brothers once more into the breach and as much as a celebration of kinship as a struggle to turn the tide. Zeta Beta Tau was chief among his loves: • International President A marvelous head for many things yet never disconnected from his sensitivity. • President of the His feel for the heavy burdened rested near the surface of his being. Despite his sometimes-hot reactions, he was always a hail-fellow well • Father of another International President met and all around him were eager to toast his health. • Grandfather of two ZBTs A lifetime of service to his Pittsburgh, his Temple and particularly the local health community earned him the respect of friend and stranger, those he agreed with and some he did not. His wartime service in the South Pacific brought him the regard of his comrades and the thanks of his countrymen. More important than his titles and honors, however, was his steadfast commit - ment to our brotherhood in its darkest days. Future ZBTs yet unborn will walk in the light of our common bond because Dick stood on the wall when times were dangerous, many of our own left the field and much of our surrounding world wished us ill. His life was full of meaning, honor and truth. Nature and learning and the instinct for servant leadership gave him the sure knowledge that the Brotherhood of all people was as simple as having each other’s back. For a hundred years he lived and shared his example, his helping hand, his laughter, his wisdom. How lucky are we to have had him with us all this time? How vital it is that we don’t disappoint him? 8 www.DUZBT.com AN IOTA’S WORTH FALL 2020

THE ALUMNI AND PARENT NEWSLETTER | IOTA C HAPTER | Z ETA BETA TAU | U NIVERSITY OF DENVER DU Soars in College Rankings

With the September release of U.S. News & World Report’s annual college rankings, the University of Denver posted double-digit gains over last year’s performance, leaping from No. 97 to No. 80 on the list of the nation’s top 400 national universities. DU is the highest rated institution in Colorado. The jump is largely attributable to improvements in several of the six categories U.S. News uses to determine rankings: outcomes, faculty resources, expert opinion, financial resources, student excellence and alumni giving. For example, in the faculty resources category—which considers everything from class size to faculty salaries—DU rose to 32 from 77. Meanwhile, the category reflecting expert opinion showed improvement thanks to a peer-assessment score that rose from 3.0 to 3.1. “It is rewarding to see our peers recognize the amazing work being accomplished by our students, faculty and staff,” says Chancellor Jeremy Haefner. “So much of everything we do is focused on furthering our faculty’s research and achieving the best possible outcome for our students.” https://magazine.du.edu/du-soars-in-college-rankings/

THE ALUMNI AND PARENT NEWSLETTER | IOTA C HAPTER | Z ETA BETA TAU | U NIVERSITY OF DENVER Motorcycling at Denver University in 1950s I share some of my early years as a motorcyclist at Denver U. in the late 1950s. Since childhood in Queens, New York, I had a obsession with everything on two wheels. One of the first things I did upon arrival at DU in 1958, was to buy a motorcycle. It was a 1946 Harley Davidson side valve 74 cubic inch, over-weight, sluggish beast. I recall being embarrassed by the various motor bikes on campus, Yamaha and Honda 150-250cc. They totally outran my cast iron, side shifting 1946 H-D. I bought it for about $100, price of an older used car in them days. It was plain, ugly black. So, I pulled it apart, in the parking lot behind the “new” house at 1959 S. Columbine. I painted it dark red, put on a few pieces of chrome, and to be “cool” didn’t put the front fender back on. Of course, when the winter rains came, the fender went back on to never be removed. I learned what fenders do. I sold that cast iron beast to another student on the campus. I replaced it with a 1954 H-D, yellow, much zippier. Nevertheless, the side mirrors were still useless, and it also dripped oil. We called it the Milwaukee Vibrator. Not much later I learned about BMW from some other riders in town. My introduction to the Beemer was interesting. I was the passenger on a BMW R-27, a 250cc single for an event called, I believe, a “gymkhana.” You had instructions with a list of places to be ridden to while being within certain time. Points off for arriving too soon or too late. That motorbike was smooth, no vibrations, quiet, nice. That convinced me to get my first BMW, a 1956, R-50, a 490cc opposed twin. I rode that thing to N.Y. (Yes, that is correct. I was “excused” for a couple years from the university for certain immature activ - ities.) The picture you saw of me on that BMW was taken on the front lawn of my home in Queens, N.Y. That was in 1964, the year of the New York World’s Fair. Wish I still had that bike, too. Photo on right is the 1946 Harley Davidson after being painted red 1/12/18, Tribe Kibitz Room wrote: and fenderless. The yellow bike pictured on left is the 1954 H-D. Great pics! But I am curious - please define “certain immature activities”.... and don’t worry it will be our secret. Doug Hmm. OK, Douglas. Our secret. Aside from significantly less than stellar grades in certain classes, there was, indeed, a capstone event. Denver U. and , (Colorado Springs) were scheduled for the annual hockey face-off rivalry on the DU campus. Their mascot, a goat, was contained in a small makeshift corral on the lawn in front of the campus chapel, the evening before the big game. I was recruited into a kidnapping of the goat. That night, I was the lookout. Two other guys led the goat into the chapel, up the narrow stairs into the open bell tower. The beast was bleating all the way up and con - tinued through-out the night. Dean Daniel Fetter, an imposing, gentle, Jewish, dean of students, recommended that I leave the university for a year or two to mature. Within days, I packed my bags, shipped them back to NYC, and mounted my trusty BMW for the pre-freeway, pre-credit cards, paper map ride back east. Upon arriving home in Queens, a draft notice was waiting. And that, Here’s Ned Porges 60 years later Dougie Davis, is our secret and the beginning of another story. at home in Seattle, still imbued with all two-wheeled motor vehicles. 11 www.DUZBT.com AN IOTA’S WORTH FALL 2020
