Conference games still tied after a five-minute 5-on-5 overtime advance to a five-minute 3-on-3 overtime (and sudden victory shootout if still tied) with the team that wins the second overtime/shootout receiving an extra point in the standings (3/SW in the standings), making all games worth three points. Frozen Four Facts and Figures tHiS Week’S gameS • For the fifth straight season, the NCHC is sending a team to the NCAA NCAA FROZEN FOUR Frozen Four as Minnesota Duluth won the NCAA West Regional for the (Xcel Energy Center - Saint Paul, Minn.) second straight season to earn a spot in the 2018 NCAA men’s Frozen Four in Saint Paul, Minn. UMD is the eighth NCHC team to make it to the Thursday, April 5 Frozen Four in the conference’s five years of existence, the most teams (3) No. 11/3 Minnesota Duluth vs. (1) No. 5/2 Ohio State, 5:00 p.m. CT from any conference during that five-year span. Frozen Four berths since TV: ESPN2 & TSN GO 2014 by conference: NCHC (8), Hockey East (5), Big Ten (4) and ECAC (2) No. 10/4 Michigan vs. (1) No. 2/1 Notre Dame, 8:30 p.m. CT Hockey (3). The Bulldogs are looking to make it three straight national TV: ESPN2 & TSN GO champions from the NCHC after North Dakota (2016) and Denver (2017) won it the last two seasons. Saturday, April 7 • Minnesota Duluth is making its sixth appearance at the Frozen Four National Championship game, 6:30 p.m. CT in program history, including second straight after finishing as national TV: ESPN & TSN2 runner-up to fellow NCHC foe Denver last season. This marks the second time the Bulldogs have made back-to-back Frozen Four trips, also doing so in 1984 and 1985. UMD is looking for its second national championship PreviouS Week’S reSultS in program history, capturing the 2011 NCAA title in the same venue as Friday, March 23 this year’s Frozen Four -- Xcel Energy Center. The Bulldogs are 3-2 all- time in national semifinals, reaching the national championship game in (4) Air Force 4, (1) No. 1/1 St. Cloud State 1 its inaugural trip to the Frozen Four in 1984, before falling in quadruple NCAA West Region Semifinal - Sioux Falls, S.D. overtime to Bowling Green, and again in 2011 and 2017. (3) No. 11/11 Minnesota Duluth 3, (2) No. 6/6 Minnesota State 2 (OT) • In 2011, Minnesota Duluth won its first national championship in Saint NCAA West Region Semifinal - Sioux Falls, S.D. Paul, defeating Notre Dame in the semifinals and then Michigan in overtime in the title game. Michigan and Notre Dame are back again Saturday, March 24 in the 2018 Frozen Four as well, but will meet in the second national (2) No. 3/4 Denver 5, (3) No. 12/12 Penn State 1 semifinal. The Bulldogs face the third Big Ten team in the Frozen Four in NCAA Midwest Region Semifinal - Allentown, Pa. Midwest Regional champ and No. 1 seed Ohio State in the first semifinal. (3) No. 11/11 Minnesota Duluth 2, (4) Air Force 1 The Bulldogs defeated the Buckeyes in the NCAA West Region semifinals NCAA West Region Final - Sioux Falls, S.D. last year to open the 2017 NCAA Tournament, 3-2, in overtime. • The three NCHC teams to make the 2018 NCAA Tournament have Sunday, March 25 posted a record of 3-2 so far. Aside from UMD, No. 2 seed Denver earned (1) No. 5/5 Ohio State 5, (2) No. 3/4 Denver 1 the other win, knocking off Midwest Region host Penn State, 5-1, in NCAA Midwest Region Final - Allentown, Pa. the regional semifinals, before falling to Ohio State in the regional final, NCAA Tournament seed in ( ) ending the Pioneers quest to become back-to-back national champions.
