Beruf Fallobst, Oder: Der König Der Verlierer Nummer 9, 10.01.2007 Beruf Fallobst, oder: Der König der Verlierer Der amerikanische Profiboxer Reggie Strickland verließ 276 Mal geschlagen den Ring - und lebte 18 Jahre lang davon von Stefanie Boewe Rising Sun/Berlin - Wie viele Kämpfe er bestritten und erlitten hat, weiß Reggie Strickland gar nicht so genau, aber "es waren eine ganze Menge". So viel ist sicher. Am 15.10.2005 stieg der damals 37 Jahre alte Boxer im Grand Victoria Casino von Rising Sun in seinem Heimatstaat Indiana gegen Dante Craig (USA) zum 363. und letzten Mal als Profi in den Ring, und einmal mehr musste er sich nach Punkten geschlagen geben. 276 Mal verließ Strickland als Unterlegener die Arenen, öfter als jeder andere Berufskollege. Dem stehen lediglich 66 Siege und 17 Unentschieden gegenüber. Damit ist Halbschwergewichtler Strickland der "King of Tomato Cans", der König des Fallobstes, wie ihn die amerikanischen Boxfans nennen. Natürlich beteuert Strickland, oft ungerecht bewertet worden zu sein. "Wenn der andere einen größeren Namen hatte, bekam er den Sieg zugesprochen, ungefähr 141 Mal", behauptet der Mann aus Indianapolis und betont: "Da gibt es allerhand Korruption." Deswegen boxte er zum Schluss nur noch in Bundesstaaten wie Indiana und Minnesota, in denen er sich fair behandelt fühlte. Strickland, der zwischen April 1989 und September 1990 stolze 21 Mal in Folge verlor und seine Gesundheit mit regelmäßigen medizinischen Checks überwachen ließ, bewies einmalige Nehmerqualitäten. Lediglich 24 seiner 276 Niederlagen erlitt Strickland durch K.o. "Das war, wenn ich keine Lust hatte zu kämpfen. Da habe ich mich dann einfach fallen lassen." Mehrmals versuchte Strickland vergeblich aufzuhören, doch "ich bin nun mal ein Wettkampftyp". Und außerdem hatte er "noch keinen Job gefunden, in dem ich dasselbe verdienen kann wie mit dem Boxen. Ich hatte eine Familie zu ernähren". Irgendwann kam ihm sein steigendes Alter bei der Entscheidung zu Hilfe. Reggie Strickland Riesig waren seine Börsen nie. Rund 1000 Dollar bekam er nach eigenen Angaben pro Kampf, im Schnitt trat er seit seinem Profidebüt als 19- Jähriger im Jahr 1987 einmal monatlich an. Manchmal öfter, manchmal auch unter Pseudonym. Als "Reggie Buse" hat er gekämpft, auch als "Reggie Raglin" ist er in den Ring gestiegen. "Wir müssen unter verschiedenen Namen kämpfen, um oft genug antreten zu können und unser Geld zu verdienen", begründet Weltergewichtler Verdell Smith die Notwendigkeit der Ersatznamen. Auch Smith alias Tommy Bowles alias Tim Brooks ist von Beruf Fallobst, sein Rekord steht bei 43 Siegen und 61 Niederlagen. Sie sind die zähen Gegner, die im Ring die Spreu vom Weizen trennen und die Kampfbilanzen viel versprechender Talente so aufpolieren, dass diese große und lukrative Kämpfe zugesprochen bekommen. Ihre Aufgabe ist es deswegen, möglichst lange zu boxen - und dann möglichst knapp zu verlieren. Was Smiths Manager Sean Gibbons schlicht "die Kunst des Matchmakings" nennt, ist einigen Kongressabgeordneten allerdings als mögliche Kampfabsprache ein Dorn im Auge. "Diese Masse von Boxern, die unter verschiedenen Namen alle paar Tage niedergeschlagen werden, bricht mein Herz", sagte Senator John McCain aus Arizona. Um zumindest den Gebrauch falscher Identitäten künftig zu unterbinden, dürfen Profiboxlizenzen, die etwa Stricklands Verband "North American Boxing Council" für 20 Dollar ausstellt, neuerdings nur noch gegen Vorlage eines Lichtbildausweises ausgegeben werden. Zudem liegt dem US-Repräsentantenhaus ein Gesetzentwurf vor, der erstmals Mindeststandards im Boxen erfordern würde. Doch noch ist das Gesetz nicht beschlossen, doch Reggie Strickland kümmert das nicht mehr: seine Karriere als "King of Tomato Cans" ist beendet. Er trifft sich jetzt manchmal mit seinem älteren Bruder Jerry auf ein Bier, um über die alten Zeiten zu reden. Jerry, zugleich lange Zeit sein Trainer, erlitt zwischen 1974 und 2000 in 135 Kämpfen 122 Niederlagen - eine Familientradition, die verpflichtet. Als im vergangenen Jahr bekannt wurde, dass Sylvester Stallone für diesen Film vor der Kamera stand, mochten selbst viele Fans das nicht glauben. Stallone wurde während der Dreharbeiten 60 Jahre alt. Der mehrfach Oscar prämierte „Rocky I“ lag 30 Jahre zurück. Und der katastrophale „Rocky V“, der die Serie eher begrub als beendete, auch schon 16 Jahre. „Rocky Balboa“, der sechste Teil der Saga um einen unbekannten Boxer aus Philadelphia, der zum Weltmeister im Schwergewicht wird, konnte also nur ein Witz sein. Jetzt kommt der Witz ins Kino. Das Leben von Rocky Balboa ist erstarrt. Morgens spricht er mit dem Grabstein seiner Frau Adrian, die vor einigen Jahren gestorben ist. Mittags kauft er Ware für sein italienisches Restaurant, in dem er abends als Grußaugust von Tisch zu Tisch geht, um den Gästen aus seiner ruhmreichen Vergangenheit zu erzählen. Die Gegenwart nimmt er kaum noch wahr. Deshalb bemerkt er auch nicht eine seltsame Fernsehshow, die „The best of all times“ heißt und in der ein Computer animierter Kampf gezeigt wird, der Rocky gegen den aktuellen Weltmeister Mason „The Line“ Dixon (gespielt von Antonio Tarver, einem echten ehemaligen Weltmeister im Halbschwer- und Schwergewicht) antreten lässt. Rocky gewinnt durch ko. Der Fall wird in den Medien diskutiert, und Dixons Management hat eine Idee. Ihr Mann gilt als unbesiegbar, aber todlangweilig. Warum nicht dessen Image ein wenig aufpolieren? Wenige Tage später sitzen sie in Rockys Restaurant. Als der auf sie zu schlurft und nuschelt: „Wolln sien paar Geschichten hörn?“, fordern sie ihn zu einem Showkampf über zehn Runden gegen den Champion. In den Seilen Nummer 9, 10.01.2007 Seite 5 von 6 Spätestens ab hier wird spürbar, wie wichtig Stallone seinen Film nimmt, bei dem er nicht nur Hauptdarsteller, sondern auch Drehbuchautor und Regisseur ist, und für den er mit einem eher schmalen Budget von 28 Millionen Dollar auskommen musste: Die Rocky-Saga war immer dann grausam schlecht, wenn Balboa in comicartigen Kämpfen irgendwelchen Emporkömmlingen das „Eye of the Tiger“ zeigen oder gar der sowjetischen Bedrohung den „Fight of the century“ liefern musste. Und sie war immer dann gut und liebenswert, wenn Rocky ohne echte Chance antrat, aber vorher linkisch und mit großem Herz versuchte, ein paar Leute hinter sich zu bringen, die ihn auch im Fall der zu erwartenden Niederlage nicht fallen lassen würden. So wie dieses Mal. Stallone – dem man in dieser Rolle sogar sein von zahllosen Botoxspritzen entstelltes Gesicht verzeiht – stapft durch ein Philadelphia, das endlich wieder dreckig und dunkel sein darf. Bringt seinen seit 30 Jahren nörgelnden Schwager Paulie (Burt Young) auf seine Seite. Klärt das gestörte Verhältnis zu seinem Sohn, der unter dem großen Familiennamen leidet. Und als er eine alte Lieblingskneipe betritt, spricht ihn die Kellnerin an: „Ich kenne dich. Du hast mich früher mal von einem Tabakladen weg geholt, wo ich immer mit Jungs rumgehangen habe.“ – „Stimmt“, antwortet Rocky. „Und Du hast gesagt, ich bin ein Verlierer und soll mich selbst ficken. Die guten Beleidigungen vergisst man nie.“ Natürlich wird Kellnerin Marie (Geraldine Hughes) nach einer sehr zart und vorsichtig erzählten Liebesgeschichte die Frau, die mit Rocky zum Kampf nach Las Vegas fährt. Nach weit über einer Stunde, als man schon fast überzeugt ist, in einem sehr amerikanischen Autorenfilm zu sitzen, lässt Stallone sein Werk von der Leine. Bill Contis berühmte Fanfare ertönt, und auf der Leinwand passiert all das, worauf man so lange warten musste: Rocky rennt durch Philadelphia. Rocky muss sich in einer Montage durch immer irrsinnigere Übungen trainieren. Rocky wird von immer mehr Leuten bejubelt. Und natürlich steht Rocky wieder auf der obersten Stufe der Museumstreppe und wirft die Fäuste in die Luft. In den Seilen Nummer 9, 10.01.2007 Seite 6 von 6 Als Rocky in Las Vegas antritt, sind die Ränge des Mandalay Bay Casinos gepresst voll mit Italienern, die ihren Helden anfeuern. Auf Mason Dixons Seite steht nur ein wutschnaubender Mike Tyson, der sich hier in einer kleinen Gastrolle selbst spielt. Selbst der junge Co-Kommentator am Ring zuckt die Achseln und gesteht: „Ich bin mit den Kämpfen von Rocky aufgewachsen. Ich kann nichts dagegen tun: Ich bin ein Fan.“ Dann beginnt der bemerkenswert inszenierte Kampf, der das Computerspiel vom Beginn zitiert, ohne es zu kopieren. Wenn er vorbei ist, weiß jeder Zuschauer, dass die Rocky-Saga beendet ist. „Rocky Balboa“ konnte eigentlich nur ein Witz sein. Er ist der beste Boxerfilm seit Jahren geworden. Rocky Balboa. The Lumbees of Robeson County, the largest tribe of Native Americans east of the Mississippi River, have persisted against the grain of Western historical narratives. A century of social repression left the sprawling Eastern Seaboard county, home to an estimated 50,000 American Indians, with among the bleakest economic outlooks in the South. Lacking full federal recognition, both the Lumbees and Tuscaroras nevertheless resisted marginalization, in part by invoking formidable historical identities that bind Indians to the land and to each other. This dissertation is concerned with a particular mechanism in the performance of identity: self-representation in mass media. Four historical markers of Indian identity in the century under examination all involve Native American resistance to white supremacy, and in each instance, media played an operative role in portraying common themes that linked these historical eras, suggesting that intertextuality recirculates narratives back to the community, and that journalism itself becomes a formation of memory. The purpose here is to gain insight into agency and the process of transculturation as iii it applies to self-representation.
