LEFTY'S LINE: On Hagwood's future: "As he matures and learns to play a sound fundamental game, he'll become one of the top forwards and start to dominate."

(34) DAVID JOSEPH KERINS Sophomore 19 6'6" 210 Forward Media, PA Major: Computer Science

Fully recovered from a thigh injury which sidelined5him for the second half of the season, he could be the surprise on the 80-81 Explorers

. . . Proved to be a tireless practice player with full knowledge that his playing time would be limited due to the veteran front line on last year's

team . . . Seeing action in but four games due to his injury, he nonetheless showed he could effectively, pass well and convert the high

percentage shot . . . "Runs extremely well and is big and strong," says Ervin ... A fundamentally strong player who could play either the small or

power forward . . . Earned All-Catholic selections at Cardinal O'Hara High School (Coach Bud Gardler), after averaging 16.4 points and 9.8 re- bounds a game . . . One of the top defensive forwards on the squad. LEFTY'S LINE: Commenting on the influence of Kerins this season: "Dave is ready to make his mark."

Another of the excellent defensive guards on the Explorer roster . . . Hoping to gain more playing time, after a December hand injury ham- pered his progress last season . . . Saw action in 14 games last winter, directing the Explorer attack from the point guard position ... A very hard worker who undertook a weight training program over the off-season to

strengthen his upper body . . . Came to La Salle with excellent high school credentials including District MVP, All-State, an All-Catholic All-America while playing for Nolan High School (Coach John Dickerson) in Fort

Worth, TX . . . Led his team to the state championships of the Texas Catholic League two seasons, successfully in his junior year. LEFTY'S LINE: Commenting on Gilmore's dedication: "He works longer and harder than anyone on the team to be his best."

On December 3, 1955, La Salle hosted Muhlenberg and Rhode Island visited St. Joseph's in the inaugural games for the Big Five. With five teams (La Salle, Penn, St. Joseph's, Villanova, and Temple) playing in one building (the University of Pennsylvania's Palestra) and sharing expenses and profits evenly, the Big Five has evolved into the most unique basketball program in the country from virtually any stand- point. More than three million people have seen the games at the Palestra during the first 25 years and millions more are regular viewers on local television. Over 140 different opponents have been met over the years

and it is a certainty that the Big Five has advanced the cause of college basketball in Philadelphia more than any single team could on its own. La Salle College, now in its 117th year of service to higher education and the Philadelphia community, was founded March 20, 1863 by the

Brothers of the Christian Schools and derives its name from the founder of the Christian Brothers, St. John Baptist de La Salle. Today, more than 7,500 day and evening division students attend classes on La Salle's 58 acre campus located at 20th and Olney Avenue adjacent to the historic East Germantown section of the city. Olney Hall, a multi-purpose modern facility, contains 39 classrooms, 15 students seminar and study rooms, and 107 faculty offices as well as such special-purpose areas as a planetarium, an amphitheatre, language laboratories, and audiovisual rooms. It houses the liberal arts area departments of English, education, history, languages, political science, and sociology. Hayman Hall, the college's $4 million physical recreation center which opened in September, 1972, contains the Joseph Kirk Memorial Natatorium with separate swimming and diving facilities, an underwater observation deck, and seats for 1,700 spectators. Three regulation-size basketball courts, a one-twelfth mile indoor suspended track, and areas for fencing, wrestling, squash, handball, gymnastics, and general exercise are the other features of the complex. 20 Ten modern residence halls accommodate 1,000 out-of-town stu- dents. A $2 million, three-story College Union Building includes a Little Theatre as well as dining halls, assembly rooms, , and other student facilities. An annex to this building is currently under construction. The $2.5 million Holyroyd Science Center houses lecture rooms and laboratories for study and research in biology, chemistry, geology, physics, and physchology. The David Leo Lawrence Memorial Library contains 190,000 volumes, periodical files for some 700 journals, and a library annex in the former Wister gymnasium opened in January, 1974, increasing library space by 50 percent.

The Army ROTC program is available to freshmen, who may apply for ROTC scholarships for advance studies. Some 215 men and women are enrolled in the ROTC program. La Salle's day and evening divisions offer degree programs in Arts and Sciences and Business Administration. An MBA program began in September, 1976. Graduate programs are also offered in theology and education. La Salle initiated Philadelphia's first Weekend College in September, 1975, enabling men and women to take courses exclusively on Saturdays and Sundays. La Salle also offers Evening Divison courses off-campus in Northeast Philadelphia and Center City. The 350 member faculty is composed of Christian Brothers, priests, and lay professors. The college has been coeducational in the evening division since February,

1967 and in its day school since September, 1970. Students at La Salle come from 21 states, most of them located in the northeastern part of the . Fourteen countries are repre- sented in the student body. Over 75 percent of them plan graduate work and about 1,000 degrees are conferred annually on day and evening division seniors. La Salle's alumni totals 21 ,000 with more than 80 percent of them still living in the tri-state areas of Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Delaware.

21 The prospect of playing De Paul twice in the same year (once in the Cabrillo Classic, once regularly scheduled), can make basketball coaches gray in a hurry. La Salle's Lefty Ervin not only has that possibility to worry about, but also must face Notre Dame and Missouri, both on the road. Eastern regional runner-up Georgetown is also a possible match-up in the Cabrillo Classic. Ervin's hair may turn white just gazing down the sched- ule. Ervin also gets a shock as he looks down his roster, searching vainly for All- America Michael Brooks, Kurt Kanaskie and Mo Connolly, all starters on last year's NCAA team that rolled to a 22-9 record. The sophomore coach is not one to dwell on sour notes, however. "Our guard play will be the strongest area, we have a legitimate seven foot center and experienced forwards, and three "blue chip" recruits", says Ervin to the skeptics. He adds though, "We must make up a 55-point loss in the three graduated starters." In senior guards Kevin Lynam and Greg Webster, Ervin feels he has one of the best defensive backcourts in the east. The duo from Archbishop Carroll High School supply the Explorers with experience and leadership, and Ervin feels he can control the games with them handling the ball. Both possess fine outside shots, so scoring will also come from the backcourt. The legitimate seven foot center is sophomore Tom Piotrowski, who was redshirted last winter. With the year to concentrate on his skills, Piotrowski could create problems for opponents with his size and fine inside shooting touch. At forward, Stanley Williams will be back after his best season ever wearing the Blue and Gold. His muscular 6'8" frame will again be clogging the middle on defense and tearing down rebounds at both ends of the court. 22 Complimenting Williams could be Don Word, who was a valuable reserve on Ervin's bench last year. An outstanding leaper, Word saw action in 22 games, starting several in the latter part of the year, when Williams was hampered by a fractured finger. Brent Hagwood, Phil Burton and Reggie Chennault are the three "blue chip" recruits joining the La Salle family. Hagwood, at 6'8", should develop into a dominating forward with his excellent rebounding and shot blocking talents. Burton, at 6'5", could supply the most immediate help. As either a small forward or big guard, Burton can create headaches for opponents with his ball handling and speed. Chennault is classified as a power forward while standing at only 6'5", but his physical strength is of a much taller player. Four players back from last year's squad appear ready to make their contribution. Paul Harter, the best pure shooter on the team will be Ervin's "zone breaker", while Dave Davis, at 6'4" gives the Explorers the scorer from the big guard slot. Dave Kerins, at 6'6", is a fundamentally sound forward who possesses a fine shooting touch and plays exceptional defense. Ralph Gilmore, a fine shooting guard, should also contribute to the Explorer attack. The 1980-81 season will be interesting. While looking down the lions throat at the demanding schedule, Ervin takes a positive outlook. "Facing the difficult schedule, it is my hope that the young talent can blend with the experienced players to give us an extra-hard working team and a pleasurable team to watch."
