1 2 1 oaBsebl Gogtw Staff Georgetown Hoya Basketball Hoyas in the Community Dikembe Mutombo came to Georgetown on an academic scholarship, anticipating graduating with a medical degree, so he could return to his homeland and help its people. But life had other plans for this 7-foot-2 student, and he ended up on the Georgetown hardcourt, becoming one of the greatest defensive stoppers in the history of Georgetown basketball. Even though he went on to the NBA instead of medical school, he never let go of his desire to improve the lives of his countrymen.

Dikembe Mutombo has been instrumental in developing community resources for the people in his hometown of Kinshasa, located in the Demo- cratic Republic of Congo, formerly Zaire. In 1997 the Dikembe Mutombo Foundation formed with the stated goal of improving the overall physical health of his Team native people. The foundation broke ground seven years ago on a 300-bed teaching hospital in Kinshasa. The fi rst new hospital in the country in over 40 years, it opened this September and will provide specialized care to
