Welcome to the 2019 Heart of Virginia Buy Fresh Buy Local Food Guide! If you are a lover of local food, you’ve come to the right place. Buy Fresh Buy Local connects consumers with local food by providing information on and food busi- nesses from the counties of Amelia, Appomattox, Brunswick, Buckingham, Charlotte, Cumberland, Halifax, Lunenburg, Mecklenburg, Nottoway and Prince Edward. Our intention is to build community around food by fostering relationships between those who eat and those who produce. People choose local foods for many reasons: a desire to sup- port local businesses, concerns over health, food safety, and the environment, or merely a love of good food. Regardless of the motivation, buying local has real impact. Research by Virginia Cooperative Extension has shown that if each Virginia household spent $10 per week on foods from local farms, our state’s economy would gain more than $1.65 bil- lion in new income each year. For the counties listed in this guide, it would mean a direct economic impact of $48 million in new income each year! When purchasing products from the businesses listed in this guide be sure to let them know where you found them...in the Heart of Virginia Buy Fresh Buy Local Food Guide. Virginia Buy Fresh Buy Local Chapters Support Buy Fresh Buy Local Chapters across Virginia. Presently, there are nine active Buy Fresh Buy Local Chap- ters statewide. A wide variety of locally grown products can be found within each chapter. When traveling, please don’t forget to Buy Fresh and Buy Local from farms and food businesses across the state.
