BETWEEN HISTORICAL TRUTH AND STORY-TELLING: THE TWENTIETH-CENTURY FABRICATION OF “ARTEMISIA” by Britiany Lynn Daugherty A THESIS Presented to the Faculty of The Graduate College at the University of Nebraska In Partial Fulfillment of Requirements For the Degree of Master of Arts Major: Art History Under the Supervision of Professor Marissa Vigneault Lincoln, Nebraska May, 2015 BETWEEN HISTORICAL TRUTH AND STORY-TELLING: THE TWENTIETH-CENTURY FABRICATION OF “ARTEMISIA” Britiany Lynn Daugherty, M.A. University of Nebraska, 2015 Advisor: Marissa Vigneault This research focuses on the twentieth century rediscovery of the seventeenth- century Italian painter Artemisia Gentileschi by scholars, novelists, playwrights, filmmakers, and artists. I argue that the various authors who told her story constructed two distinct “Artemisias,” what I identify as the “Academic Artemisia” and the “Celebrity Artemisia.” The “Academic Artemisia” results from writings by scholars focused on her 1610 Susanna and the Elders, who used approaches from formalism and connoisseurship, to feminism and iconography. The “Celebrity Artemisia” stems from popular fictions that refashioned the life and art of Artemisia according to pop culture tastes. Studying what has been said about Artemisia’s life – great woman artist in a time when patriarchy allowed few, survivor of rape, slandered in a public trial, married matron, and single mother – reveals why her story captivates art historians and fans, especially women who identify with her struggle. However, it is also made evident that while scholars are bound to the historical evidence, writers of fictional narratives in novels, plays, and the film have drastically revised “Artemisia” into a twentieth-century heroine. iii Dedicated to my Tim. Kathleen Gilje, Susanna and the Elders, Restored and X-Ray, 1998. 117 1 INTRODUCTION My approach to Artemisia Gentileschi reviews the history of depictions of the Biblical Susanna, from Early Christian catacomb paintings, to seventeenth and eighteenth century paintings created at the height of popularity of the subject, and finally to later, less frequent depictions by modern artists such as Pablo Picasso.1 I wanted to understand Artemisia’s 1610 Susanna and the Elders (fig. 1) within this iconographic history, but in doing so, I became increasingly concerned with the language of the scholars who write on Artemisia and their relationship to popular media accounts. The changing art historical methodologies brought to bear on Susanna and Artemisia over the course of the twentieth century profoundly affected our popular modern myth of artistic genius. Artemisia painted at least three Susannas over the course of her career, others may be lost or attributed to other artists at this time: Susanna and the Elders (1610), Susanna and the Elders (1622) (fig. 2), and Susanna and the Elders (1647) (fig. 3). Nannette Salomon, in her 2005 essay “Judging Artemisia: A Baroque Woman in Modern Art History,” compares how scholars have analyzed all three differently. Salomon briefly reminds the reader how the personal vision or ideology of the art historian contributes, in some degree, to their interpretation of the artwork. Salomon asserts that, “Each reading has some validity. Likewise, I refer to her father as Orazio Gentileschi or Orazio, rather than Gentileschi alone, to avoid confusion. 2 what we are doing when we “do” art history.” 2 Starting from this notion that all interpretation is done through the lens, or personal vision, of the author, in this thesis I unpack the representations of Artemisia that are present in academic and popular culture formats. My interest is in identifying the “Artemisia” constructed from the various voices. What I identify as “Artemisia” is not the historical seventeenth-century painter, but the fabrication of a dramatic woman painter who challenged social and professional traditions, and inspired scholars, writers, playwrights, directors, artists, and passionate fans centuries later. Before beginning to explore these fictional accounts, it is important to outline the known facts about the historical Artemisia Gentileschi. Artemisia

    Chiaroscuro In the series of books titled The Art of Drawing published by Search Press, Giovanni Civardi’s Drawing Light & Shade: Understanding Chiaroscuro discusses the application of this technique. Civardi says that “[c]hiaroscuro generally refers to the graduating tones, from light to dark, in a work of art, and the artist’s skill in using this technique to represent volume and mood” (Civardi, p. 3). Essentially, artists use chiaroscuro to show the contrast between light and dark areas in a composition “to suggest form in relation to a light source” (p. 3). The term chiaroscuro originated during the European Renaissance and artists developed the technique in various ways such as through composition, mood, and to show volume (p. 3; Harvard Art Museum glossary). For instance, chiaroscuro can be found in different kinds of art forms that include drawing, woodcuts, painting, photography, and in cinema (Hall; Landau and Parshall; Civardi). Within a compositional sense, Geertgen tot Sint Jans’s Nativity at Night (1490) is an example of establishing light sources within a painting (Earls; Hall). Ugo da Carpi, Giovanni Baglione, and Caravaggio developed the use of an unseen light source as part of the composition in their work (Earls; Hall). Caravaggio is accredited with developing the style which became known as tenebrism. This particular style stresses the intense contrast between light and dark where darkness is in prominence (Fichner-Rathus; Buser). In drawing and sketching, artists use pencil, charcoal, paint, ink, or a computer to create the effect of volume by establishing one or more light sources. In Drawing Light & Shade: Understanding Chiaroscuro, Civardi effectively explains form and cast shadow with a light source, the penumbra line “around the outer edge of the cast shadow [where] the darkness is less intense,” the shadow line, form shadow, the penumbra, cast shadow, and shadow line from the shadow cast by the object onto a surrounding surface (Civardi, pp.

    The Symbolism of blood in two masterpieces of the early Italian Baroque art Angelo Lo Conte Throughout history, blood has been associated with countless meanings, encompassing life and death, power and pride, love and hate, fear and sacrifice. In the early Baroque, thanks to the realistic mi of Caravaggio and Artemisia Gentileschi, blood was transformed into a new medium, whose powerful symbolism demolished the conformed traditions of Mannerism, leading art into a new expressive era. Bearer of macabre premonitions, blood is the exclamation mark in two of the most outstanding masterpieces of the early Italian Seicento: Caravaggio's Beheading a/the Baptist (1608)' (fig. 1) and Artemisia Gentileschi's Judith beheading Halo/ernes (1611-12)2 (fig. 2), in which two emblematic events of the Christian tradition are interpreted as a representation of personal memories and fears, generating a powerful spiral of emotions which constantly swirls between fiction and reality. Through this paper I propose that both Caravaggio and Aliemisia adopted blood as a symbolic representation of their own life-stories, understanding it as a vehicle to express intense emotions of fear and revenge. Seen under this perspective, the red fluid results as a powerful and dramatic weapon used to shock the viewer and, at the same time, express an intimate and anguished condition of pain. Pollock explores the relationship between art and adjudication. The separationof powers, the federalist system, and the inherent constraints of the common law confine state courts. Notwithstanding those constraints,state courts have demonstrated creativity when interpretingstate statutes and constitutionsand when adapting the common law to changing conditions. Thus, Justice Pollock fnds artistry in the work of state courts. He begins by exploring creativity in statu- tory interpretation. Then, Justice Pollock examines two areasof substantive law of greatpublic concern: public-school-financelitigation under state constitutions and the common-law redefinition of the modem family. Justice Pollock demonstrates how state appellate courts, through public-school-finance litigation, have shaped the constitutionalright to a public-school education. Justice Pollock then discusses how state courts have reacted to the changing composition of the American family. By recognizing these changes, state courts have redefined the family in areas as diverse as zoning ordinances, surrogacy agreements, and same-sex marriages. Common to all these endeavors is protection of the inherent dignity of the individ- ual Justice Pollock concludes that an appreciationof the similarities between art and judging may lead to a better understandingof the judicial process. Delivering the Brennan Lecture in Vanderbilt Hall is for me deeply moving. Justice Brennan graced the New Jersey Supreme Court for four years before starting his remarkable service on the United States Supreme Court.     Stilling 1 Judy Chicago’s The Dinner Party and the Problem of Female Identity Rosalyn Stilling Nicholls State University In the 1970s, the feminist movement rocked the social scene finding prominence in many disciplines of the humanities including the art world. Judy Chicago was inspired by her feminist convictions to create her infamous sculpture The Dinner Party (1974-79), which has become an icon of feminist art. Her sculpture features a triangular configuration of tables with thirty-nine plates for various historical women decorated with obviously vaginal abstracts called “butterflies”. (Kuby 129). Although Judy Chicago’s intent was to bring attention to women forgotten from history books, a noble cause, the execution of her piece left viewers and critics with polarizing views, some praising her genius and others deriding her work. These differing reactions call into question feminism as a methodology of art. Lolette Kuby’s review of The Dinner Party called “The Hoodwinking of the Women’s Movement: Judy Chicago’s Dinner Party” from 1981 reveals the problems of Chicago’s piece from a feminist perspective. Most striking and poignant was Kuby’s observation that Chicago’s vaginal imagery did more to objectify than glorify women. Kuby’s review calls into question the success of feminism as a methodology of art because of the extreme subjectivity and controversial sexual imagery used by the artist. Nel marzo del 2012 ha avuto luogo a Roma, all’Accademia dei Lincei e a Villa Medici, un Convegno sul tema: “Lo storico dell’arte intellettuale e politico. Il ruolo degli storici dell’arte nelle politiche culturali francesi e italiane”[1]. L’iniziativa celebrava il centenario della nascita di Giulio Carlo Argan (1909) e di André Chastel (1912), sottolineando l’importanza di queste due grandi figure della storiografia artistica italiana e francese del XX secolo. La celebrazione fornisce l’occasione per proporsi di fare, in modo molto modesto, un confronto intellettuale tra Roberto Longhi (1890-1970)[2] e Giulio Carlo Argan (1909-1992)[3], confronto che, a quanto ne so, non ha finora tentato gli studiosi. Solo Claudio Gamba allude, di passaggio, nel suo profilo biografico di Argan, al fatto che questo è “uno dei classici della critica del Novecento, per le sue indubitabili doti di scrittore, così lucidamente razionale e consapevolmente contrapposto alla seduttrice prosa di Roberto Longhi”[4]. Un contrappunto, per quello che si dice, poco più che di “stile”, e nient’altro. E ciò non sorprende. Di fatto, se ogni contrappunto pressuppone logicamente un denominatore comune, un avvicinamento tra i due grandi storici dell’arte pare – almeno a prima vista – scoraggiante, tale è la diversità di generazioni, di linguaggi, di metodi e, soprattutto, delle scelte e delle predilezioni che li hanno mossi. Inoltre, Argan è stato notoriamente il grande discepolo e successore all’Università di Roma ‘La Sapienza’ di Lionello Venturi (1885-1961), il cui percorso fu contrassegnato da conflitti con quello di Longhi[5].
