It seeks to establish the relationship of the various valkyrja reflexes of the culture under study with other supernatural females (particularly the dísir) through the close and careful examination of primary source material, thereby proposing a new model of base supernatural femininity for the late Iron Age. The study then goes on to examine how the valkyrjur themselves deviate from this ground state, interrogating various aspects and features associated with them in skaldic, Eddic, prose and iconographic source material as seen through the lens of the hall-based warrior elite, before presenting a new understanding of valkyrja phenomena in this social context: that valkyrjur were used as instruments to propagate the pre-existing social structures of the culture that created and maintained them throughout the late Iron Age. -
Coventry in the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography
Coventry in the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography The Oxford Dictionary of National Biography is the national record of people who have shaped British history, worldwide, from the Romans to the 21st century. The Oxford DNB (ODNB) currently includes the life stories of over 60,000 men and women who died in or before 2017. Over 1,300 of those lives contain references to Coventry, whether of events, offices, institutions, people, places, or sources preserved there. Of these, over 160 men and women in ODNB were either born, baptized, educated, died, or buried there. Many more, of course, spent periods of their life in Coventry and left their mark on the city’s history and its built environment. This survey brings together over 300 lives in ODNB connected with Coventry, ranging over ten centuries, extracted using the advanced search ‘life event’ and ‘full text’ features on the online site (www.oxforddnb.com). The same search functions can be used to explore the biographical histories of other places in the Coventry region: Kenilworth produces references in 229 articles, including 44 key life events; Leamington, 235 and 95; and Nuneaton, 69 and 17, for example. Most public libraries across the UK subscribe to ODNB, which means that the complete dictionary can be accessed for free via a local library. Libraries also offer 'remote access' which makes it possible to log in at any time at home (or anywhere that has internet access). Elsewhere, the ODNB is available online in schools, colleges, universities, and other institutions worldwide. A Medieval Psalter ‘Perfected’: Eighteenth-Century Conservationism and an Early (Female) Restorer of Rare Books and Manuscripts Sonja Drimmer The eighteenth century has an uneven track record in the study of medieval manuscripts. During the later part of the century medieval art found a newly appreciative audience, but it was often the case that where esteem was granted it was for the evidentiary value of illumination. As witnesses to the dress, habits and pastimes of the Middle Ages, manuscripts attracted the emerging breed of antiquaries who reproduced outstanding pictorial examples in engravings. Disseminated in this format, medieval illumination appeared to most audiences in visual translations that deferred to the tastes and prevailing ideologies of the era. At the same time, other antiquaries, like grand tourists of the medieval world, poached miniatures from their native habitats and arranged them in albums and picture frames to augment their private collections.1 Both the victim and the beneficiary of these attitudes is a manuscript in the British Library that has gone unnoticed. 2 A Psalter that was originally produced in London during the second quarter of the fifteenth century, Add. MS. 6894 (henceforth, ‘The Denyer Psalter’) is remarkable not for the damage that was done to it, but for the care taken to rectify this damage and to restore to the manuscript something resembling its former integrity. Interleaved among its six-hundred-year-old folios are parchment replacements from a different historical era, installed by a woman who has been forgotten by history and, in one instance, supplanted in it. However, as a very early conservator of rare books and manuscripts, Eliza Dennis Denyer was a woman well ahead of her time. -

GRUNDTVIG LEARNING PARTNERSHIPS COMPENDIUM 2009 Version August 2010 INTRODUCTION The European Union's Lifelong Learning Programme (LLP) supports education and training cooperation between more than 30 countries in Europe. Part of this programme, known as Grundtvig, specifically supports general and non-vocational adult learning through grants provided to adult education staff, adult learners and European projects involving organisations active in this field. Grundtvig aims to open up new ways for adults of all ages to improve their knowledge and skills, to develop their individual aptitudes and potential, and to contribute actively to the communities in which they live. The Grundtvig Learning Partnerships bring together relevant organisations from a minimum of three European countries, with the aim of developing joint projects for exchange of experience and methods on topics of common interest to the partner organisations. A wide range of topics are covered by the partnerships, involving learners and staff in transnational cooperation activities during the two years of the project. One of the participating organisations acts as coordinator. This Compendium presents the 291 Grundtvig Learning Partnerships, involving some 1500 organisations, selected in 2009, whose activities will be carried out in the period 2009-2011. They are grouped in this document according to the country of their coordinating organisation. The information presented in the Compendium, such as project data, descriptions of the projects, topics addressed by the partnership, name and address of accepted partner organisations, have been provided by the partnerships at application stage. We hope that the reader will find this Compendium an interesting source of information and will feel inspired to develop new partnerships.
