Contact: [email protected] FEMALE LITERACY AND THE SOCIAL IDENTITY OF THE CLERGY FAMILY IN SEVENTEENTH-CENTURY ENGLAND JACQUELINE EALES Women’s reading and writing habits in the early modern period have largely been studied through the evidence from aristocratic and gentry families, whose papers were the most likely to have survived and who comprised the social ranks with the highest rates of female literacy.1 In contrast, a comprehensive assessment of female literacy in English clerical families has yet to be written, so some central lines of enquiry will be drawn here using evidence from Kent as a case study. The example of Elizabeth Elstob, who can lay claim to be Kent’s first bluestocking, is of particular interest to this enquiry.2 She was the daughter of a Newcastle merchant and was orphaned in the early 1690s at the age of eight, when she was sent to live with her uncle, Charles Elstob, a prebendary at Canterbury Cathedral. Elizabeth later described her uncle as ‘no friend to women’s learning’, but she overcame his opposition to become the first female Anglo-Saxonist scholar. -

MARRIED WOMEN, CRIME, AND QUESTIONS OF LIABILITY IN ENGLAND, 1640-1760 by Marisha Christine Caswell A thesis submitted to the Department of History In conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Queen‟s University Kingston, Ontario, Canada February, 2012 Copyright ©Marisha Christine Caswell 2012 Abstract Upon marriage, women in early modern England became subject to the common law doctrine of coverture. Coverture had a number of consequences, all of which stemmed from a married woman‟s lack of independent legal identity. These consequences largely manifested themselves in a married woman‟s complete lack of property rights, but the lack of an independent legal identity created complications for assigning criminal responsibility to married women in the early modern criminal justice system. Coverture largely manifested itself in the criminal law through the defence of marital coercion, which held that a married woman who committed a crime – with the exceptions of murder and treason – was assumed to be acting under her husband‟s coercion and was therefore not liable for her actions. This study examines the perceptions, treatment, and experiences of married women in the northern assize circuit and London between 1640 and 1760, with particular attention to the defence of marital coercion. This thesis discovered that the household ideal, not the defence of marital coercion, was the most important factor in determining the perceptions, treatment, and experiences of married women with the criminal justice system. People in early modern England did not see coverture as the loss of rights, but rather the means through which to create a unified household. -

1 UNIV ONLINE CATALOGUES UC:E4 The Rectory of Arncliffe, Yorkshire, 14 th -20 th centuries Arncliffe is a village in North Yorkshire, situated about fifteen miles north of Skipton, in the remote area of Littondale. The ecclesiastical parish of Arncliffe comprised several villages in Littondale in addition to Arncliffe itself, namely Halton Gill, Hawkswick, Litton as well as some others in neighbouring Wharfedale, namely Buckden, Hubberholme and Yockenthwaite. High hills separate the two dales, and access was not always easy in winter. In addition to the main church at Arncliffe, there were also chapels at Halton Gill and Hubberholme, although the former was of little consequence before a major rebuilding in 1848. The advowson of Arncliffe was in the gift of the Percy family, the Earls of Northumberland, until Henry Percy, second Earl of Northumberland (1394–1455), gave it to University College in 1443. He also arranged for the appropriation of the rectory (and with it the right to collect the rector’s tithes) to pass to University College, in return for their appointing a vicar to the parish. The reason for Percy’s generosity is not known: Antony Wood suggested that the university had suggested he benefit a College which, as well as being the oldest in Oxford, also had strong north-eastern links (see W. Carr, University College , p. 62), but that may be mere guesswork. Percy certainly expected the north-east to benefit from his gift: as set out in UC:E4/2D/1 below, the money from the tithes was to finance three Bachelors or Masters planning to read theology from the dioceses of Durham, Carlisle or York, with special preference to be given to candidates from Northumberland. -

Collectors, Consumers, and the Making of 17th-Century English Ballad Publics: From Networks to Spheres by Patricia Fumerton [Slide 1] Title [Slide 2] In 2005, when I joined Richard Helgerson as part of the UCSB branch of the Making Publics Project centered at McGill UniversityI had a sneaking suspicion that the combined scope and necessary granularity of this project could drive one mad. In writing this essay, I felt that foreboding madness more closely creep upon me as I have tried to make sense of some five years of my own work on making publics while at the same time paying tribute to the lifetime making of Richard, a guiding genius for the MaPs project before his too early demise in 2008. Both are impossible tasks. Making Publics has been a great success, but the sign of its success—as we moved in our discussions from defining a public to defining publics in the making—is that we were always making ourselves making and unmaking publics being made and unmade. That is, just as one’s finger is placed on the pulse of a public in the making, it is in the process of being—by virtue of its definition of being a public and not the public—unmade. I recall George Wither’s emblem [Slide 2], which tellingly riddles, “As soone, as wee to bee, begunne; / We did beginne to be Vndone.”1 I am here beginning or—I guess in the grander scheme of things—continuing my being undone.2 Writing in this paper of the processes specifically of making a ballad public with a sidelong eye to the makings of the great Richard Helgerson, I by definition must embrace simultaneously their and my own unmaking, especially since I could never attain Richard’s uncanny breadth and depth of vision that can sweepingly take in all of history while remaining acutely attuned to the historical moments of both the then and the now. -
