C ONTENTS TO J UNE 2017 AIRFIELD REVIEW The Journal of the Airfield Research Group The journal was initially called Airfield Report , then ARG Newsletter, finally becoming Airfield Review in 1985. The number of pages has varied from initially just 6, occasio- nally to up to 60 (a few issues in c.2004). Typically 44, recent journals have been 48. There appear to have been three versions of the ARG index/ table of contents produced for the magazine since its conception. The first was that by David Hall c.1986, which was a very detailed publication and was extensively cross-referenced. For example if an article contained the sentence, ‘The squadron’s flights were temporarily located at Tangmere and Kenley’, then both sites would appear in the index. It also included titles of ‘Books Reviewed’ etc Since then the list has been considerably simplified with only article headings noted. I suspect that to create a current cross-reference list would take around a day per magazine which equates to around eight months work and is clearly impractical. The second version was then created in December 2009 by Richard Flagg with help from Peter Howarth, Bill Taylor, Ray Towler and myself. -

The Auster T.7 was the two -seat dual -control variant of the Auster A.O.P.6, 77 being built for the RAF, serial batches VX926 - 29, 934 - 36 and WE534 - 572, 587 - 616. 24 May 51 Awaiting Collection from Rearsby. 25 May 51 No.20 Maintenance Unit, RAF Aston Down, Glos (Aircraft Storage Unit). Delivered in glossy silver overall colour scheme with training yellow fuselage and wing bands, Matt black anti-glare top panel and black lettering. 19-21 Jul 51 Displayed at Daily Express 50 Years of Flying Exhibition at RAF Hendon. 1 Aug 51 No.663 Air Observation Post (A.O.P.) Squadron at RAF Hooton Park, Cheshire, joining the Auster A.O.P.6 aircraft operated by the Squadron, which was a Territorial Army Unit and each weekend Royal Artillery personnel came to train, using the aircraft to ‘spot’ for their artillery. Each squadron consisted of several detached Flights, each with five Austers. Since the army lacked aircraft maintenance personnel, RAF personnel undertook that work. In the 1952-4 period the unit’s CO, recalled former 663 Squadron National Serviceman Joe Lowe, was a Major Sturgeon, and WE600 was basically his aircraft, hence retaining its silver doped scheme whereas the rest of the unit’s aircraft were camouflaged, though it was still used in exercises, using suitable fields as temporary landing grounds. -

DANCE BANDS IN CHESTER : AN EVOLVING PROFESSIONAL NETWORK Thesis submitted in accordance with the requirements of the University of Liverpool for the degree of Doctor in Philosophy by Helen Vera Southall Dance Bands in Chester: An Evolving Professional Network ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS This thesis has been a long time in the making, and a great many people have helped along the way, starting with my parents who encouraged my early forays into music-making, and continuing with a long list of teachers in school, university and elsewhere, including my clarinet teacher Paul Harvey (formerly of the Royal Military School of Music), and Professor Stephen Banfield, then of the University of Keele, who first sparked my interest in music for dancing. Particular thanks must go to my supervisors David Pattie and Peter Harrop, who managed to give me the advice I needed when I needed it; I know from my own experience as a lecturer that this is more difficult than most people appreciate. Three local musicians have been especially helpful; Norman Frost and Les Stevenson introduced me to the network of dance band musicians still active in the area, initially via the Heswall Concert Band and later in Norman’s dance band the Norman Roy Orchestra, which I played with from 2000 to 2005. Those experiences, and the many stories I heard from musicians and enthusiasts along the way, led to my undertaking this study in the first place. Don Owens, who also played for Norman, devoted a great deal of time and effort to doing many of the interviews on my behalf. -
