3rd March 2017 STANDING OUT THE MAGAZINE FOR MOUNTS BAY ACADEMY Cover: Day trip to Sweden from Denmark 22nd September 2017 The Place To Feel Welcome... PRINCIPAL’S REPORT It’s been another wonderful week here at the Academy. We have had many visitors again this week. We have been conducting personal tours of the campus to prospective new students and their parents as well as the usual array of guests coming in from An Adventure other schools and colleges to see how Learning School we deliver our adventurous curriculum. It has also been a great pleasure to welcome visitors from our technology partner Apple who have been reviewing our status as an Apple Distinguished School. Apple Distinguished Schools are centres of leadership and educational excellence that demonstrate Apple’s vision for learning with technology — and they believe they are some of the most innovative schools in the world. ADVENTUROUS ART We are one of only 24 schools in the country who have achieved this accreditation, which is continuously reviewed to ensure that schools are raising their standards by cultivating environments in which students are excited and curious about learning. I am particularly pleased to announce that this week we also passed the milestone that 80% of our staff have now completed theTHE PLACE Apple TO Teacher Programme. MOUNTS BAY ACADEMY BE OUTSTANDING WORLD CLASS LEARNING ON YOUR DOORSTEP This weekend will also see the Academy open to 200 prospective new students for our Class of 2023. They will be treated to a fabulous array of adventurous learning activities and participate in one of our amazing “entry point” learning adventures hosted by Mr Harvey and a plethora of his talented colleagues who will be really showing off how much fun learning at Mounts Bay can be. ARE YOU READY TO GO? WELCOME TO MOUNTSYOUR BEST BAY CHOICE FOR 2018 Finally, well done to all of the students who have competed in the Cornwall School Games over the course of the summer. We finally managed to finish all the competitions despite one of the most windswept days we have experienced all year for the finals of the beach games. After a hard fought but enjoyable day, Mounts Bay emerged as champions again for the second year in succession. What a great way to round off the week! Best wishes CHAMPIONS FOR THE SECOND YEAR RUNNING! Sara Davey Academy Principal DABE VINCI YOUR PROGRAMME BEST Year 9 Success in Food and Cookery In September 2016 11 students in Year 9 started a new course in Food and Cookery. Over the year they learnt about hygiene, nutrition and developed an array of cooking skills. As part of the assessment the students prepared a two course meal as well as completing written assignments. EXCELLENCE REWARD At the end of the year all the students achieved a merit or better with two students achieving distinction stars. These would be great results for students at the end of Year 11 so to achieve them two years earlier is a truly excellent effort. Well done to all these students and we know that they will build on this success to work hard towards achieving more excellent results in the future. Report by: Mr Bromfield BE INSPIRED Vikings, Bacon and The Demon This week 19 Mounts Bay Academy students embarked on the first leg of our annual exchange programme with Helsingor Lilleskol, a small free school about an hour outside Copenhagen, the capital of Denmark. If you’re at all uncertain about the geography at this point, think ‘vikings’ and the tallest group of people in Europe, and you’re pretty much in the right place… Arriving on Monday evening after a marathon coach- plane-train journey, we were greeted by possibly the friendliest group of young people you could imagine at Helsingor Station, the MBA students being whisked away in a flash to the homes of their host families to variously enjoy meals of pizza, spaghetti and flaeskesteg – best translated as roast pork. First lesson: there’s a lot of pork and bacon here! The next day we spent the morning in school, getting to know not just our Danish hosts but also the group of visiting German students who are spending the week here, too. Teambuilding activities and a lunch prepared by the Danish students quickly broke the ice. After lunch we jumped on a ferry to Sweden, just a short hop across the water. We were blessed with glorious weather and stunning views, including Kronburg, the castle made famous by Hamlet. Wednesday saw us on the train again, this time heading into Copenhagen, 70+ students ready to sample the BE INSPIRED delights of Tivoli Gardens, the world’s second oldest operating amusement part located in the heart of the city; the world’s oldest park is also in Denmark. Second lesson: the Danes clearly know how to have fun! The Demon and worse were a huge hit with all – some of us struggling to keep down our bacon – and then it was into the city itself for photographs, souvenirs and yet more wonderful sunshine. Copenhagen is abandoning the car by degrees and is now amongst the world’s most pedestrian-friendly cities. And the fun’s not over yet, but we’ll save our students’ reflections for a second instalment of our Denmark adventure next week. Report by: Mr Helliwell MBA FUTURES Cornwall College Consult with MBA Year 10 A small group of Year 10 students volunteered their lunch time on Tuesday to offer their feedback on the newly launched Cornwall College Prospectus to Kerry Trevenna Creative Executive from Cornwall College. The newly designed prospectus has a more career orientated layout and feedback from students was very positive overall, with some constructive suggestions for development. "Great to see where students have progressed onto." - Rhys Brown "Lots of useful information especially on apprenticeships." - Alex Hosking "’A’ Levels should state what exam syllabus they follow." - Henry Korteling “"Great photos." - Iris Rainbow Thank you to Rhys Brown, Kieran Harris, Alex Hosking, Henry Korteling, Iris Rainbow and Dan Whiteway for their student voices. ” Report by: Mrs Masters BE ADVENTUROUS Girls Active Returns in Ten Days! On Monday they worked in teams to produce a creative version of the town trail. They established rules and roles whilst working in a team and started to produce a creative version of the trail. Also, I was very impressed with the standard of their first homework task. Here is an example of a creative timeline showing the history of Penzance. Well done Lucia. Report by: Miss Drew BE CREATIVEBE CREATIVE REAL Project 7 Blue have produced some beautiful poetry inspired by the work of Wilhelmina Barns- Graham. They focused on creating strong imagery in their poems, through the use of a variety of poetic techniques, and concentrated on the relationship between image and text. I am really proud of the lovely work they have produced so far. Report by: Miss Tooby The students have produced very refined and GCSE quality visual outcomes in their first REAL project lessons. They have applied their poems inspired by Wilhelmina Barns Graham to connect descriptive language and mark making together in the execution of their outcomes. An amazing set of work 7 Blue! Well done! Report by: Miss Green We've been studying “Land’s End” from many angles in our Real Project classes. We “have found our favourite images of Land’s End and painted them in the style of Wilhelmina Barns-Graham, an abstract artist, whose speciality was Cornish Landscapes. She used very fine detail to catch the spirit of Cornwall. In her seascapes her use of fine lines created movement within the picture to stupendous effect. We have been using watercolours and inks to recreate this fine detail in our own paintings of Land’s End, which has been a really fun and inspiring process, so much so that we have been writing our own poetry. So now we are accomplished artists and poets. Many thanks to Miss Green and Miss Tooby for bringing out our creative potential.
