PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

It’s been another wonderful week here at the Academy.

We have had many visitors again this week. We have been conducting personal tours of the campus to prospective new students and their parents as well as the usual array of guests coming in from An Adventure other schools and colleges to see how Learning School we deliver our adventurous curriculum.

It has also been a great pleasure to welcome visitors from our technology partner Apple who have been reviewing our status as an Apple Distinguished School. Apple Distinguished Schools are centres of leadership and educational excellence that demonstrate Apple’s vision for learning with technology — and they believe they are some of the most innovative schools in the world. ADVENTUROUS ART

We are one of only 24 schools in the country who have achieved this accreditation, which is continuously reviewed to ensure that schools are raising their standards by cultivating environments in which students are excited and curious about learning. I am particularly pleased to announce that this week we also passed the milestone that 80% of our staff have now completed theTHE PLACE Apple TO Teacher Programme. MOUNTS BAY ACADEMY BE OUTSTANDING WORLD CLASS LEARNING ON YOUR DOORSTEP This weekend will also see the Academy open to 200 prospective new students for our Class of 2023. They will be treated to a fabulous array of adventurous learning activities and participate in one of our amazing “entry point” learning adventures hosted by Mr Harvey and a plethora of his talented colleagues who will be really showing off how much fun learning at Mounts Bay can be. ARE YOU READY TO GO?

WELCOME TO MOUNTSYOUR BEST BAY CHOICE FOR 2018

Finally, well done to all of the students who have competed in the School Games over the course of the summer. We finally managed to finish all the competitions despite one of the most windswept days we have experienced all year for the finals of the beach games. After a hard fought but enjoyable day, Mounts Bay emerged as champions again for the second year in succession. What a great way to round off the week!

Year 9 Success in Food and Cookery

In September 2016 11 students in Year 9 started a new course in Food and Cookery. Over the year they learnt about hygiene, nutrition and developed an array of cooking skills. As part of the assessment the students prepared a two course meal as well as completing written assignments.

EXCELLENCE REWARD

At the end of the year all the students achieved a merit or better with two students achieving distinction stars. These would be great results for students at the end of Year 11 so to achieve them two years earlier is a truly excellent effort. Well done to all these students and we know that they will build on this success to work hard towards achieving more excellent results in the future.

Vikings, Bacon and The Demon

This week 19 Mounts Bay Academy students embarked on the first leg of our annual exchange programme with Helsingor Lilleskol, a small free school about an hour outside Copenhagen, the capital of Denmark. If you’re at all uncertain about the geography at this point, think ‘vikings’ and the tallest group of people in Europe, and you’re pretty much in the right place…

Arriving on Monday evening after a marathon coach- plane-train journey, we were greeted by possibly the friendliest group of young people you could imagine at Helsingor Station, the MBA students being whisked away in a flash to the homes of their host families to variously enjoy meals of pizza, spaghetti and flaeskesteg – best translated as roast pork. First lesson: there’s a lot of pork and bacon here!

The next day we spent the morning in school, getting to know not just our Danish hosts but also the group of visiting German students who are spending the week here, too. Teambuilding activities and a lunch prepared by the Danish students quickly broke the ice.

After lunch we jumped on a ferry to Sweden, just a short hop across the water. We were blessed with glorious weather and stunning views, including Kronburg, the castle made famous by Hamlet.

Wednesday saw us on the train again, this time heading into Copenhagen, 70+ students ready to sample the BE INSPIRED

delights of Tivoli Gardens, the world’s second oldest operating amusement part located in the heart of the city; the world’s oldest park is also in Denmark. Second lesson: the Danes clearly know how to have fun! The Demon and worse were a huge hit with all – some of us struggling to keep down our bacon – and then it was into the city itself for photographs, souvenirs and yet more wonderful sunshine. Copenhagen is abandoning the car by degrees and is now amongst the world’s most pedestrian-friendly cities.

And the fun’s not over yet, but we’ll save our students’ reflections for a second instalment of our Denmark adventure next week.

"Great to see where students have progressed onto." - Rhys Brown "Lots of useful information especially on apprenticeships." - Alex Hosking "’A’ Levels should state what exam syllabus they follow." - Henry Korteling “"Great photos." - Iris Rainbow

Thank you to Rhys Brown, Kieran Harris, Alex Hosking, Henry Korteling, Iris Rainbow and Dan Whiteway for their student voices. ”

REAL Project

7 Cool are working on their book project capturing the spirit of Penzance. On Monday they worked in teams to produce a creative version of the town trail. They established rules and roles whilst working in a team and started to produce a creative version of the trail.

Also, I was very impressed with the standard of their first homework task. Here is an example of a creative timeline showing the history of Penzance. Well done Lucia.

REAL Project

7 Blue have produced some beautiful poetry inspired by the work of Wilhelmina Barns- Graham. They focused on creating strong imagery in their poems, through the use of a variety of poetic techniques, and concentrated on the relationship between image and text. I am really proud of the lovely work they have produced so far. Report by: Miss Tooby

The students have produced very refined and GCSE quality visual outcomes in their first REAL project lessons. They have applied their poems inspired by Wilhelmina Barns Graham to connect descriptive language and mark making together in the execution of their outcomes. An amazing set of work 7 Blue! Well done! Report by: Miss Green

We've been studying “Land’s End” from many angles in our Real Project classes. We “have found our favourite images of Land’s End and painted them in the style of Wilhelmina Barns-Graham, an abstract artist, whose speciality was Cornish Landscapes. She used very fine detail to catch the spirit of Cornwall. In her seascapes her use of fine lines created movement within the picture to stupendous effect. We have been using watercolours and inks to recreate this fine detail in our own paintings of Land’s End, which has been a really fun and inspiring process, so much so that we have been writing our own poetry. So now we are accomplished artists and poets. Many thanks to Miss Green and Miss Tooby for bringing out our creative potential. Real Project in Y7 Blue - by Marco Burke” BE CREATIVEBE CREATIVE

Beach Games

The beach events of the Cornwall School Games that were rescheduled from last summer were held on a VERY windy Perranporth beach last Friday. Teams from Mounts Bay were, there to compete in the surfing, volleyball, and surf lifesaving.

In extremely difficult conditions the students performed amazingly and I am pleased to report that there were some great team and individual results. Lots of medals brought home and many points towards the overall school games totals.

The wind made sure that all athletes were tested and they put in 100% effort throughout the day. With the conditions as they were the outstanding performances both on and off the water showed the time and training that these students put into their sports. In the senior surfing finals, 5 of the 8 finalists were Mounts Bay students. A big thank you to both the staff and parents who attended to make the day a great success.

Cornwall Surf Champions

Having won the Penwith Schools Surf competition earlier in the year, the Mounts Bay Academy Surf team headed off to Perranporth this week with high hopes of success in the Cornwall Schools surf competition. The surf was very big and windy, providing challenging conditions for the competitors, especially for those who haven't had a lot of experience in competitions. After a team talk on competition strategy, including pointers from those students who are doing well in the national level, the heats began with Year 7-9 boys. Finlay Hanson, Eddie Roynon and Tom Thompson all did really well getting through to the quarter finals and semi finals. In the end Huck New won the final to take the overall 1st place, with Woody New 2nd and Thomas Reeves 4th. In the bodyboarding Angus McLeod took 2nd place in his first ever competition, in the girls Year 7-11, Bonnie Whitlock claimed 1st place, with Iris Tanner 3rd and Asha Sykes 4th, and in the Year 10-11 boys Finlay Grey-Williams narrowly missed out on the semi final spot, and Alfie Brown made the semi final, claiming 5th place overall. With so many great individual results, Mounts Bay Academy surf team have now been crowned Cornwall School Champions retaining our trophy from last year, a great result! Well done to all the team.

MBA vs Penryn National Cup Win

SQUAD:

Mollie Maycock (C) Holly McEwen Kelci Prowse Rebecca Storey Libby Terry Rose Hammond Freya Prodger Chantelle Haggis Beau Cowan-Dickie Izzy Graham Lia Byrne

On Wednesday 13th September the Mounts Bay U14 football team played . We had a good first half and played our best. We had some good shots: Izzy’s hit the post and the keeper just saved Freya’s shot. When the whistle went for half time Miss Veall told us what we could do better. We put this into practice in the second half in our game play. We passed really well all the way down the pitch and the keeper came out, Rebecca Storey got the ball and shot it into the corner of the goal. Penryn did a good job trying to get the goal back but they didn't succeed. Right at the end of the game Penryn had a corner; they passed it in and it missed and then the whistle went.

Girls Rugby Back with a Bang!

Girls Rugby training is back on after school on a Thursday and we are pleased to announce our biggest ever turnouts so far. Miss Tripp and Miss Page were extremely excited to see over 20 girls at our first training session last Thursday and yesterday's session was even bigger with close to 30 girls from Years 7 - 10 attending. This is fantastic news for a relatively new club BUT...... WE WANT MORE!

We play games, we tackle, we roll around on the floor, we get muddy and most importantly we have a lot of fun. If this sounds like your type of thing please come along and try it. All you need is your PE kit and trainers to start with. If you would like to know any more you can see Miss Tripp (Languages) or Miss Page (Science) or just drop us a quick email.

Next week Miss Tripp wants 30+ girls at training. Bring it on!

Girls Rugby - Thursdays after school - 3.30 - 4.15 meet in the blue PE building.
