Navarrette facilitated the world’s first Chicano art exhibit in Hollywood, with the work of artists throughout California. In 1977, at West Valley College in Saratoga, California, he served as a counselor and English instructor. He was next promoted to Dean of Student Development/Extended Opportunities Programs & Services (EOPS). In 1986, Ricardo Navarrette was hired at Santa Rosa Junior College as the Assistant Dean of Admissions & Records. He was promoted to Dean of Admissions/Assessment & Research in 1991. When he was promoted to Assistant Superintendent/Vice President of Student Services, he administered various departments including Counseling and Special Programs, Student Affairs, Admissions and Records, Financial Aid, Scholarships, Student Equity, EOPS, Disability Resources, Student Health, Veterans, CalWORKs and the Transfer/ Career Center. Ricardo was instrumental in numerous programs that focus on Latino students such as Adelante, High School Equivalency Program, MESA, Puente and the designation of SRJC as a Hispanic Serving Institution.
