New items are highlighted. NEWS FOR AGENCY STAFF 1. The American National Council on Aging has created a five-part online training module series on health promotion for older adults. The series provides an overview of evidence-based healthy aging programming, and each module defines health promotion concepts, frameworks, and terms, and provides interactive exercises and links to tools and resources. The modules are self-paced and take about 30 minutes to complete. Access the training. Strathcona Place Senior Citizens Centre is looking for a volunteer Watercolour Instructor. If anyone has any suggestions, please contact Assistant Director Terrie Shaw at [email protected]. This is a section for agencies to use to: • seek partners for projects they are interested in initiating • share information about projects other agencies might want to try • share information about projects developed in response to ESCC core initiatives (such as addressing concerns related to isolated immigrant seniors) • seek advice or input on projects they want to try but are hesitant about getting started • share information about resources (for example, making other agencies aware of space available for rent or indicating a willingness to share accommodations) Send us your information by emailing [email protected]. Mill Wood Seniors Centre is celebrating its first anniversary Sept. 10 from 1 to 4 p.m. The centre, located at 7207 - 28 Ave., will provide free entertainment and light refreshments, opportunities to learn about its programs and other community services, the chance to participate in a no-charge recreational activity, and the opportunity to visit with old friends and make new ones. For details call Anne at 780-465-7066. 2. The “winners” of the second Link-Letter movie pass giveaway of 2008 are Kimberly Buehler, Colleen Emmott, Navita Kalra, Rosemary Kitay and Hayley Weedon. They each received two “admit two” passes for an advance screening of The Women at Empire City Centre 9 Cinemas, 10200 - 102 Ave., on Sept. 11 at 7 p.m. Keep an eye open for the next giveaway. Even I don’t know when that may be. 3. The Alberta Council on Aging (ACA) will deliver a Community Conversations Empowering Capacity and Collaboration workshop in Edmonton Sept. 17 to inform community and non-profit seniors’ organizations of the availability of funding. The workshop will aid in identifying community needs, application and reporting processes, and best practices for grant development. For information or to register call toll free 1-888-423-9666. ACA will host the event at #210, 14964 – 121A Ave. from 10 a.m. to noon and again from 2 to 4 p.m. 4. Alberta Employment and Immigration (Information & Privacy Office) is offering a number of one-day courses to address concerns raised by organizations and service providers regarding the impact of privacy legislation on their ability to share information with each other. Share “promising practices” with colleagues in the nonprofit/voluntary sector and brag just a bit about your agency. More and more organizations are realizing we need to work more collaboratively to build the capacity of the sector and ensure long-term success for all of us! With this in mind, the City of Edmonton and Volunteer Edmonton are co-hosting a workshop on Oct. 10 from 8:30 a.m. to noon in the Green and Gold Room at Commonwealth Stadium. Share recruitment or retention strategies, volunteer recognition ideas, promotional ideas and marketing strategies. Ten organizations that agree to serve as presenters will have their workshop fees waived. If interested in participating as a presenter, send a brief description of your "promising practice" (200 words or less) which describes the strategy you'd like to share, the tools used, why it was successful, and the cost involved. Fund Development for Non-Profit Societies is a seminar intended to engage board members and executive leadership in creating sustainable funding using a tested, proven formula. Sarah McCrum will show participants how to establish a steady stream of mission-focused major donors: donors who will give for operations, capital projects and endowment funding.
