This page A vast expanse of undifferentiated whiteness Intentionally Left blank 3 4 Foreword and acknowledgements I have never written a PhD, nor a foreword. And yet, here I am, doing both. While I’m at it, I might as well seize the opportunity to give thanks to a number of significant others who may or may not know of their own importance in making this dissertation a realilty. It is true that I am the author of it, but ‘I’ did not write this dissertation - in the sense that it would not have been possible for me to embark on my PhD journey, let alone complete it, were it not for the support of the people whose names I am about to mention. Each of these individuals supported me just the way they were supposed to. Maybe the reader is familiar with the Danish saying ‘ingen nævnt, ingen glemt’. It roughly translates to ‘none mentioned, none forgotten’ and is used to denote the intention to not leave anyone out – for example in a speech of thanks. But in not naming someone is that not exactly what happens? They get left out, forgotten. So, let me name names. I would like to start with a queer beginning. My family, to be specific. My husband Lars and our cat: thank you for reminding me what a family can look like, be like – what family is. I fear that I in the latter days of this project have treated my cat as a means to an end (basically as stress-relief) rather than as an end itself. And I know that Lars has had to listen to way too much of my bullshit. For that, I apologise. To Lars: there is a fine line between love and madness, they say. I do not know who ‘they’ are, but I believe they are right. For I am madly in love with you. It makes me happy to say that I am yours and I am proud that you are mine. I find it meaningful to try my best every day to make it as easy as possible for you to love me. According to Murdoch, love is the extremely difficult realisation that something 5 or someone other than oneself is real.1 Love, in other words, cannot be reduced to one particular feeling. It is also a feeling; but love is so much more. First and foremost, I think love is about being-together and worldmaking. Lars, you are not simply a part of my life; you are my life, my world. In fact, I am unable to imagine myself without you – which is an extremely difficult and potentially maddening realisation. At least from an individualist perspective. But the true beauty of such realisation is that I only become me when I am with you. I love you, irrevocably and unconditionally. Sara. Thank you for believing in me, even when I did not. I could not have wished for a better supervisor. Thank you for opening your home to me and for introducing me to your network. This has meant everything to me both personally and professionally. I am forever grateful for your acceptance of supervising my project and for your way of constantly pushing me in the direction of new challenges and opportunities without pushing me over the edge. And thank you for also helping me say ‘no’ to some of the opportunities that presented themselves along the way. I hope to be able to return the favour some time, and help you say no now and then. When the research we do – our job – gets entangled with social justice issues, it becomes a moral and political activity – a commitment. And that commitment spurs an eagerness to make that difference, which makes a difference. Your supervision, you being you, made all the difference in the world to me. I do not know if I have ever told you this, if not, then I hope you have been able to feel that I really do look up to you and your work. To me, you have been a primary source of inspiration and motivation. Thank you for welcoming me to your research community at Aarhus University and for playing along with my ideas. A wholeheartedly thank you to my office collective, in particular Thomas, Maria and Bontu. I love what we have done with the place, which does feel like a home away from home. The Danish word ‘hygge’ comes to my mind when thinking of the space we have made for ourselves. It is a cozy but also a quirky place, in which we can unleash our creative potentials as, for example, that time when we built a daybed from all the books that were discarded during our department merger.2 A great many thanks also to the rest of the PhD group for a supportive environment that has made the writing of my PhD a slightly less lonely endeavour. I find it unique how we, in spite of the individual competition in academia, manage to maintain a relationship where we as peers are not afraid to share work-in-progress and also take time to help each other and appreciate the constructive criticism that we can give one another. I have missed out on too many of our bi-weekly lunches these past few months, but do know that I value them greatly as an often much-needed breather from work. In addition to the PhD group I would like to say thank you to the entire Department of Organization (IOA), especially Morten (PhD Coordinator), Signe (Head of Department), Marianne (Head of Secretariat), and Susanne (internal discussant for my first work-in-progress seminar).     Large Festivals – Great 12 Struggles János Zoltán Szabó Introduction Contemporary music festivals in late modern European culture have different histories, focuses, missions and geographical conditions. This chapter calls for deeper analysis of the development of festivals that is rooted in cultural anthro- pology, sociology and the sciences – a multidisciplinary approach. Without this, festivals will simply be known as recurring celebrations, thematic ritual events reflecting the basic values and the worldview shared by the participants that are the basis of their social identity. However, nowadays, the economic importance of festivals has become even more rigorously evaluated, whilst complicated ways to measure cultural impact are often left out, even from detailed reports. Most studies emphasise the difference between Eastern and Western European festivals (Newbold et al. 2015), however, the life cycle of a festival is influenced by factors that are similar wherever they take place: marketing, promotions, sales, audience development and quality, improvement challenges etc. As the size of the festival market has grown, new questions are being asked about eco- nomic efficiency. In this study I will search for similarities in the development of five major Eastern and Western European festivals, namely Glastonbury Festival (United Kingdom), Roskilde Festival (Denmark), Sziget Festival (Hungary), Exit Festival (Serbia), and Woodstock Festival Poland (Poland). I will also analyse the Sziget Festival’s life cycle in detail in order to go deeper into the issues and discuss ways to further research music festivals. In analysing these festivals, the main selection criterion was what they have in common: they attract more than 100,000 visitors yearly, but readers might also recognise that all of them follow the message of the original Woodstock Music and Art Fair – commonly called Woodstock Festival and labelled as ‘An Aquarian Expo- sition: 3 Days of Peace and Music’, in Bethel, New York, 15 – 18 August, 1969.

    The largest music event in Scandinavia presents this year’s lineup With the addition of Jack White, this year’s biggest rock icon, Roskilde Festival has added another great headliner to this year’s lineup, which already includes Bruce Springsteen, Björk, The Cure, Mew, Bon Iver, and The Roots. Today’s lineup release also brings great news to fans of Alison Krauss, Machine Head, Janelle Monáe, The Cult, Santigold and Amadou & Mariam. Extremely melodic The Shins are returning to Roskilde Festival with a brand new and already very popular record, and exciting new bands such as Django Django, Cold Specks and Clock Opera have also been added to the poster. Music director Rikke Øxner says: "It's a difficult art presenting an artist at the perfect time in their career, but I think we've succeeded in doing so with a large part of our bookings. Needless to say, we also need to present timeless artists such as The Cult, Alison Krauss and Machine Head, as well as the brand new artists, whose great career still lies ahead of them." Throughout the years Roskilde Festival has presented unique musical set ups and 2012 will not be any exception. The international super group Apparatjik, DJ Static and music collective Copenhagen Collaboration are already preparing unique Roskilde Festival shows designed especially for this summer’s festival. Furthermore, Roskilde Festival has announced a new stage for electronic music, Apollo, which will host some of the hottest bands of the genre, such as Modeselektor and Pretty Lights. With the addition of another stage, the total number of bands on Roskilde Festival comes close to 200.
