BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE: Clara Thompson Woody was born in Belleville, Kansas on December 2, 1885. She lived in various places in Kansas (Clay Center, Morganville, Goodland, and Topeka) and went to school in City, Colorado; Las Cruces and Albuquerque, ; and Monrovia, . Clara moved to Globe, Arizona, in the spring of 1917 and married Clarence W. Woody later that year. After two years in Texas and Oklahoma, Clarence Woody was discharged from the Army and they returned to live in the Globe area because the climate was good for her health. Clarence worked at various mines in the Globe area, and retired in 1957. Clara worked in law offices and insurance companies, and began historical research in 1940, and collected a small library of books. Clara wrote a series of articles for the Arizona Republic in 1956, and in 1977 wrote “Globe, Arizona” with Milton L. Schwartz. She was also active in the Gila County Archaeological and Historical Society, the Arizona Pioneers’ Historical Society (later the Arizona Historical Society), and corresponded with friends and relatives, various historical and professional organization, and others interested in historical research. Clara T. Woody died in Globe, Arizona on April 5, 1981.

Leslie Ethelbert Gregory was born in Guatemala, Central America on November 28, 1878. At the age of four, he moved with his family to California, where he was educated. Gregory worked as an accountant, a journalist, and a banker in Mexico, before moving to Arizona. During the Franklin D. Roosevelt administration, Gregory served as the Gila County Field Representative for the Federal Writers Project and wrote numerous articles on the area for the Arizona State Guide and for other publications. He also wrote a number of articles for the Arizona Silver Belt on items of local interest. Leslie E. Gregory died in Globe, Arizona on November 29, 1946.

The events of the Pleasant Valley War are also covered in the material. Included in the collection is a significant body of material from Leslie E. We surmise the Gregory material ended up in the collection with Woody used it as a resource for her writings. The collection is arranged into five series: Series I: Correspondence, 1912-1979 is divided into three section: a) Clara Woody’s correspondence; b) Leslie Gregory’s correspondence; and c) the correspondence of others. Some of the articles are from magazines, journals, and books, and much of the material is copyrighted.

Series III: Newspaper clippings, ca. 1876-1974 includes articles from newspapers and magazines on Arizona subjects of local interest, such as mines and mining towns, expeditions to locate stolen stock and mineral deposits for later exploitation and development, conflicts between numerous interests, geological features, roads, Indian reservations, stage and railroad robberies, and biographical sketches of early settlers. There are also articles about Kansas and Ohio, two states in which Woody had a personal interest, as well as obituaries, high school commencements, births and marriages.

Series IV: Research notes, ca. 1920-1977 contains material collected by Woody and Gregory on mining history and exploration, military activities, wars, murders, celebrations, various communities, people and reservations, transportation, excerpted material from the Arizona Silver Belt, biographical files on early settlers, including a file on Woody’s family, New Mexico pioneers, and other subjects. There is a file of information on Alvin Booth, a black man who served as a delegate for the State of Arizona to the exhibition on the 50th anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation held in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. There are also files of information on various professional organizations and association (the US/Arizona History Commission, Gila County Archaeological and Historical Society, the Gila County Museum, state historic sites surveys, and historical preservation).
