For each of the grades K-8, and for each of the courses taught at the 9-12 grade levels,an overarching goal statement is listed. For example, for kindergarten, the goal statement is: the child will develop greater self-awareness, learn to work with others, explore past and present, and acquire communication skills. Each grade or course also is composed of several strands--the areas of learning in the social studies-suchas history, geography, political science, and economics. Within each of the strands listed for a particular grade or course,more specific goals are stated. For example, under the geography strand for kindergarten, the strand goal is: the stvdent will understand geographic concepts of location, human interaction, environment, and movement. After each strand goal core objectives are listed. Core objectives describe the body of material that must be taught. For example, under the kindergarten geography strand goal, thecore objectives include: recognize a globe asa model of the earth, identify different types of waste (paper, plastic, glass), and describe geographical features of one's community. The Mississippi Curriculum Structurefor the Social Studies The Mississippi Curriculum Structure,Sc.cial Studies sets forth what the Mississippi State Board of Education believes should be theoutcomes of the social studies education in the public schools.Section 37-3-49, Mississippi Code of 1972 as Amended 1991 stipulates: The State Department of Education shall providean instructional program. .for the public schools as part of the State Programof Educational Accountability and Assessment of Performance. The local school board must adopt the objectives that will formthe core curriculum whichwillbesystematicallydeliveredthroughoutthe district. Standards for student performance must be establishedfor each core objectiveinthelocal program and those standards establishthe district's definition of mastery for each objective. Thereshallbe an annual review of student performanceinthe instructional program against locally established standards. The core objectives for electivecourses must also be included in the local instructional program.School districts may elect to add other objectivesto the local instructionalprogram. The Social Studies Curriculum Structure, adoptedin 1986, has been revised as part of a total curriculum revision cycle that will take placeover the next several years. The Revision Process for the Social Studies From nominations by school district superintendentsand others, a Social StudiesRevision Committee was appointedin January1990. This committee was given the responsibility of draftinga new social studies curriculum for Mississippi. All teacher nominees not assignedtcthe Revision Committee were asked toserve on the Social Studies Input 1 L0 Committee.The Input Committee's task was torespond to each draft of thecurriculum. The twenty-one member SocialStudiesRevision Committee was composedof publicschoolteachers,administrators, university professors and an assessmentspecialist. The Input Committee was composedof 227 public school teachers,K-12.The two committees represented seventy-four schoolsfrom eighty-three school districts. To gain perspective on thedirection the Social Studiescurriculum should take,the Social Studies RevisionCommittee studied the literature and consulted with a representativeof the national College Board, anonprofit organizationthat provides tests andeducational services for students, schools and colleges.The consultants were sponsoredby Project 95, a joint effort among the three boardsthat oversee public education inMississippi, the State Board of Education,the Board of Trustees for theInstitutions of Higher Learning and the Community,and Junior College Board.For a year and a half, the RevisionCommittee met to determine, in stages,the Mission Statement of the Social Studies,the Goals of the Social Studies, theScope and Sequence for the curriculum,and the core objectives.After each round of revision, results weresubmitted to the Input Committeefor comments and suggestions.These were incorporated into theStructure before the next stage wasundertaken.Near the conclusion of the work more input fromCollege Board consultants helpedthe
