Plot Saravanan, a psychiatrist, meets with his friend Senthilnathan Senthil, and his wife Ganga while on vacation. Senthil Casturi's mother wanted Sentil to marry Prie, his father's cousin Kandaswami to reunite the two branches of the family after 30 years of separation, because Senthil's father decided to marry Kasturi instead of Kandaswami's sister, Ahilandeshwari, who is also his cousin. Saravanan learns that Senthil bought the Vetteapuram mansion, despite attempts by local village elders to dissuade them, and moved in with them. Ahilandeshwari is jealous of Saravanan and plans to kill him with the help of his assistant Oomayan. When the family visits their ancestral temple, the high priest reveals the reason why everyone is afraid of the mansion. 150 years ago, a king named Vettayian went to Vizianagaram in , where he met and fell in love with a dancer named Chandramuhi. However, she did not reciprocate his feelings, as she was already in love with another dancer named Gunasecaran. As a result, Vettayan forcibly took her to his palace. Unknown to him Chandramuhi forced Gunasekaran to stay in the next house and secretly met him. When Wettayan discovered this, he decapitated Gunasecaran on Durgashtam and burned Chandramuhi alive. As a result, the ghost of Chandramuhi tried to take revenge on Vettayan, who with the help of various priests and sorcerers from all over the country tamed the ghost, locking him in a room located in the southwest corner of the palace. Priya is in love with Viswanathan, a dance professor who reciprocates her feelings. Their love is supported by Saravanan, who asks Kandaswami to arrange their marriage. Hearing the story of Chandramuhi, Ganga, who believes that the story was fabricated to scare thieves from stealing treasures in the room, wants to go there. She receives the key from the room of the gardener Durga's granddaughter and opens the door to the room. Saravanan later receives an email to visit the patient. Saravanan assures Sentil to call him if anything happens. Subsequently, strange things begin to happen in the house: the ghost scares people in the house, things inexplicably break down, and the Gangi lights up. Suspicion turns in Durga's direction. Sentil immediately calls Saravanan to solve the case. As soon as Saravanan returns, the mysterious creature tries to kill Prie. Saravanan is also investigating other incidents, such as attempts to kill Sentil made by poisoning his coffee and shoving an aquarium at him, as well as a mysterious voice singing at night. Ganga mysteriously disappears during the engagement of Prie and Viswanathan. Saravanan notices her absence and searches for her, but she is attacked by Omayan, sent by Ahilandeshwari. Saravanan conquers Oomayan and with the help of Sentila finds Ganga, who is allegedly sexually harassed by Viswanathan. Saravanan shows Senthilu and Viswanathan that Ganga suffers from a forked personality disorder. Sarawanan tells them that the Ganga who turned into Chandramuhi was trying to Priya and Senthil, and framed Viswanathan for sexual harassment, because, from Chandramuha's point of view, Viswanathan is her lover Gunasekaran, as he remains in the same place as Gunasekaran. Framing Viswanathan and framing Durga through possession, Chandramuhi planned to end the engagement. The only way to stop Chandramuhi is to make her believe that she has killed Vettayan in Durgashtam since Saravanan pretended to be Vettayan and plucked one of the pujas led by exorcist Ramachandra Acharya, talking to Chandramuha to find out his wish. Before drawing out his plan, Saravanan asks the Sentinel to summon the Ganges to see for herself whether she is turning into Chandramuhi or not. When Senthil does this, she turns into Chandramuhi, which shocks him. Concerned Sentil shouts at the Ganges, turning it back to normal. Ahilandeshwari eavesdrops on Saravanan's idea of self-sacrifice and apologizes to him. At Durgashtam, in the dance hall, the family and Ramachandra Acharya allow Chandramuhi to burn Sarawanan alive. Ramachandra Acharya then blows smoke and ashes on the Ganges' face when she is given a torch to burn Saravanan. Sentil then opens the hatch to allow Saravanan to escape, and instead burns a effigy of Vettayan. Convinced that Vettayian is dead, Chandramuhi leaves ganga's body, treats her. Two families reunite after 30 years, Saravanan and Durga fall in love, and the couple Swarna and Murugesan become parents after eight years of marriage. Starring Rajinikanth as Dr. Sarawanan and Vettayan Raja Prabhu as Senthilnathan Jyothika as Chandramuhi and Ganga Senthilnathan Vadivelu as Murugusan Nayantara as Durga Nassar, as Kandaswamy as Viswanathan and Gunasekaran Viakujamar, as Durga's grandfather R. Vasu, producer Ramkumar Ganesan and Raj Bahadur perform guest performances in the song Devuda Devuda. Four weeks ago, four weeks ago, Rajiniquant called me on a Sunday afternoon and asked me what I was doing. I told him that I had a lot of and I spend time with my sons! He laughed in his stylish way and then asked if I was doing any new production. I told him that we are thinking of making a Hindi movie with Santoshi in March. We're also doing the Telugu series, which my cousins look after. I was completely free at the time. Then he asked me: Are we making a movie, Rama? It was a pleasant surprise. On Sunday afternoon, after a heavy lunch, this offer from Rajnikanth was like a superb dessert! I said, I'm very happy, sir. He told me he'd heard the subject, and we'd make a movie about it. - Ramkumar Ganesan on how Chandramuhi developed, in October 2004 during the successful meeting of Mannan (1992), Rajinikanth announced that he would star in the 50th film Sivaji Productions, which will eventually become Chandramuhi. In September 2004, Rajinicant congratulated him. Vasu with the success of his film Aptamicra (2004) and was impressed with the script of the film. Vasu then asked to remake the film in Tamil with Rajinikanth, who in turn called Ramkumar Ganesan and asked him to shoot it under the banner of Ramkumar, Sivaji Productions. Ramkumar called Vas, who was worshipping in the Guruwayor temple at the time, informing him of Rajinicanant's desire to make Aptamitra in Tamil under his leadership. Vasu reworked the script he wrote for to match Rajininicant's acting style. The film focused on the concept of dissociative identity disorder, commonly known as multiple personality disorder (MPD) or personality disorder. Another film, Annyan (2005), in which starred and was released two months after Chandramuha, was also based on the same mess. Tota Tarani was the film's art director and also designed the costumes used in the film. As for the design of the Palace of Vettayapuram, he watched both Apthamitra and his source film Manichitrathazhu (1993) to get the main idea of the plot of the film. Vasu wanted Tarani to make the scenery more colorful and grandiose, and did not want a realistic look of the original film. Tarani designed Chandramuha's room and placed a corridor in it that was very different from the original and its remake of Cannada. The corridor resembled those commonly seen in palaces in . Sidney Slayden did an additional costume design in the film. Casting Rajinikanth played the roles of Dr. Saravanan and King Vettayan. He wore a wig for his role. Rajinicanth and Vasu discussed each scene involving the first and added the necessary materials before they were shot. Rajinicanth appears at the beginning of the film, unlike Manichitratahu, where the same character, played by , appears in the middle of the film. Rajinikanth asked Vasu to change the name of the dancer from Nagaulli, who was named Danseuse in Aptamistra, to Chandramuhi, as the latter sounded more royal. While Vishnuwardhan uttered Haula Haula in the original, Rajiniquant used Laka Lakku, which was based on the manners of the villain in Marathi Rajininicant's play, which Rajinicanant watched as a child. Ramkumar Prabhu's brother played Senthibnathan, Engineer and owner of Ganesh Constructions. Prabhu was a co-producer of the film with Ramkumar. For the roles of Ganga and Chandramuhi, was originally chosen to reprise her role from Apthamithra, but her death led the director to choose , and he formed a character to satisfy her. In November 2004, Simran refused to do the project because her role required a lot of dancing, and named her pregnancy at the time as another main reason for her refusal. Aishwarya Rai was offered the role, but she turned down the offer due to schedule conflicts. and Rimma Sen were also seen as replacements. The role finally went to Djyotika, who gave 50 days of her schedule for the film. Vasu wanted Gioticika to play her scenes in a manner different from 's role in Manichitratah, and he filmed the scenes himself before they were filmed with the participation of The Giotic. Nayantara was chosen to portray Rajinikanth's love interest, Durgu, after Vasu was impressed by her performance in the debut film Manassenakare (2003). Vadivelu played the comic role of Muruguesan, the younger brother of Ahilandeswari and Kandaswami. Rajinikanth, on the 200th day of the film's theatrical launch celebrating the feature, said it was he who recommended Vadivelu Vasu for the role and asked Ramkumar Ganesan to get Vadivelu dates before planning the filming schedules. Nassar played Kandaswami, Muruguesan's older brother. Chila, known for her role in Malayalam (1965), played Ahilandeswari, Kandaswamy's older sister and Murugesan. When Hila was signed for the role, she asked producers not to divulge details about her role in the media. Filming of the amphitheatre in Ierapolis, where Konjam Neram was filmed. The main photograph began on October 24, 2004, with a puja ceremony for the fly-half, shot at Annai Illam, the residence of Sivaji Ganesan. Ramkumar Ganesan said that the filming will be finished by February 15, 2005, which will give the film crew two months to complete post-production work, including visual effects. The first filming schedule began two days later with a scene of a brawl in the choreography of Talapathy Dinesh and was filmed in Ramawaram in . More than 25 Toyota Kualis and 30 stuntmen were involved in the sequence of the fight, which involved Rajinikanth. The Vettayapuram mansion was built in . The songs sequence, one pictured on Rajini alone, two songs in which he appears with other major cast members, and the climax of the song, which was pictured on Jyothika, were filmed in Ramoji Film City. Vasu said the film took just 78 days to be completed instead of the planned 120 days. The song Devuda Devuda was dedicated to various professions, especially cleaners, wastewater cleaners, farmers and ies. According to the data which helped the production team look for locations for the song Konjam Neram, Australia and Russia were the original choice for filming locations for the song sequence, but Ramkumar Ganesan and Vasu chose Turkey, making Chandramuhi the first Tamil film to be shot there. The production unit flew to from Chennai via on 25 February 2005. Filming of the song was completed after the audio run. Konjam Neram was filmed in segments in Ephesus and Pamukkala. The shooting in Ephesus took six hours. The segment in Pamukkala was filmed in an amphitheatre in the ancient city of Hjerapolis, which is located near Pamukkale. The last section was filmed in the Kappadscha area, a 10-hour bus ride from Istanbul. Raa Raa was staged by Kala and took four days instead of the planned seven days. At a seminar on the revision of mental disorders, which was dedicated to Chandramuhi and Annonyan, psychiatrist Asokan noted that in both films there were many logical shortcomings. Responding, Vasu said he knew nothing about mental illness: I've never had a ghost brush. Anyone who watches movies can come to the conclusion that ghosts have a shape - a white sari and a pale face. Vachittandaa Aapu!!!, which means son-in-law ... he trapped me!!!, also became popular. The line uttered by Rajinikanth Prabhu, Naan gunda Iranda illa irukkadhu... nee elachcha irukkadhu, which translates as I won't well if I put on weight ... but you won't look good if you have a weight loss caused a lot of laughter among viewers. Prabhu's line Anne Koduma Sarawanan idhu? was popular, which means What is this atrocity, Sarawanan? It is commonly used to express irony or surprise.
