It was released on April 14, 2005 on the eve of the Tamil New Year. The film was a major box office success; it was the longest-running South Indian film, with a theatrical run of 890 days until its record was overtaken by the film Telugu Magadheera (2009), which completed a theatrical run of 1000 days.

    Rajini’s Finger, Indexicality, and the Metapragmatics of Presence Constantine V. Nakassis, University of Chicago ABSTRACT This article explores the ways in which Tamil film stars, so-called mass heroes such as the “Superstar” Rajinikanth, are presenced in theatrical events of their onscreen revela- tion and apperception. Drawing on film analysis, ethnographic accounts of theatrical re- ception, and metadiscourse by filmgoers and industry personnel, I focus on Rajini’s onscreen pointing gestures in highly charged moments of presencing. As I argue, these data provoke reflection on indexicality—defined by Charles Sanders Peirce as a semiotic ground based on “real connection” or “existential relation,” such as copresence, contigu- ity, or causality—for at issue with Rajini’s fingers is precisely the question of his auratic being and presence. Instead of analyzing performative acts of presencing through appeal to the analytic of indexicality, then, what if we interrogate those ethnographic particular- ities of existence and presence that constitute the ground for indexical relations and ef- fects as such? Such an inquiry would refuse to leave indexicality as a self-evident, pregiven analytic, but instead pose it as an open ethnographic question. Opening up the question of existence and presence, as I show, allows us to unearth other semiotic “grounds” of indexicality and representation beyond those that we all too often take for granted.     Negotiating identities in the Diasporic Space: Transnational Tamil Cinema and Malaysian Indians Gopalan Ravindran Abstract One of the significant transformations brought about by globalization is the transnationalization of diasporic cinemas. A case in point is the growth of diasporic cinemas catering to the varied diasporas of Indian origin. One of the most important diasporas cinema is Tamil cinema. Negotiations of identities in the Tamil diasporic space are mediated by a variety of sources ranging from Tamil films, Tamil internet, Tamil satellite television/radio and Tamil newspapers/magazines, beside interpersonal sources. Even though, studies have not been done on the relative influence of the above sources, it is apparent that in countries like Malaysia and Singapore, Tamils films are having a perceptible influence among different sections of the Indian population. This paper aims to examine the role of transnational Tamil cinema in Malaysia with a focus on Malaysian Tamil cinema audience's negotiations of cultural identities in the diasporic space Cultural Space and Public Sphere in Asia 2006, Seoul, Korea / 240 Introduction The notion of film spectators is bridled with as many adequacies as there are inadequacies. The plight of the notion of film audience is no different. Notwithstanding the seemingly simple similarity between the two, there are divergent views of their locations (Meers,2001; Fuller-Seeley,2001) While the film spectator is positioned as the dreaming and individualistic psychological material before the screen (Rascaroli,2002), members of film audience are seen as belonging to collectives that are constituted by socio-cultural conditions. Such collectives are also recognizable, empirically and otherwise; in contrast to the dreaming film spectators.

Not just talking about the billion- strong audiences in India itself, where 12 million people are said to go to the cinema every day, but of large audiences well beyond the Indian subcontinent and the Diaspora, in such unlikely places as Russia, China, the Middle East, the Far East Egypt, Turkey and Africa. People from very different cultural and social worlds have a great love for Indian popular cinema, and many have been Hindi Films fans for over fifty years. Indian cinema is world – famous for the staggering amount of films it produces: the number is constantly on the increase, and recent sources estimate that a total output of some 800 films a year are made in different cities including Madrass , Bangalore , Calcutta and Hyderabad . Of this astonishing number, those films made in Bombay, in a seamless blend of Hindi and Urdu, have the widest distribution within India and Internationally. The two sister languages are spoken in six northern states and understood by over 500 million people on the Indian sub – continent alone – reason enough for Hindi and Urdu to be chosen above the fourteen official Indian languages to become the languages of Indian Popular cinema when sound came to the Indian Silver screen in 1931 . Silent Era – The cinematographe (from where we have the name cinema) invented by the Lumiere brothers functioned better the Kinetoscope of Edison and Dickson. The Lumiere brothers who invented the cinematographe started projection of short (very short, one to two minutes long) films for the Parsian public on November 28, 1895.

With the global economic slowdown affecting the advertising spends, sectors like TV, Print, Radio and Outdoor which depend on advertising revenues were affected. Further the liquidity crunch and the consequent lack of access to funds also affected the capacity expansion plans of players across various M&E segments. However, behind every adversity lies an opportunity. Media companies are under pressure to change, innovate and re-examine their existing business models. Players need to draw upon new capabilities to survive in this environment. In immediate future, media corporates are likely to focus more operating margins, and assessing opportunities for consolidation, while building on core strengths. The year was also full of interesting developments. While the GEC space witnessed the entry of new players, entry of new DTH players expanded the penetration of digital TV households. Print media space also saw multiple new launches and expansion activities in the first half of the year. Last year, was also the year where Indian players made their foray in the global arena, through big ticket acquisitions and joint ventures.
