Dissertation Presented to the Faculty of the Graduate School of the University of Texas at Austin in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy The University of Texas at Austin December 2007 For Justin and Elijah who taught me the meaning of apu, pācam, kātal, and tuai ACKNOWLEDGMENTS I came to this project through one of the intellectual and personal journeys that we all take, and the number of people who have encouraged and influenced me make it too difficult to name them all. Here I will acknowledge just a few of those who helped make this dissertation what it is, though of course I take full credit for all of its failings. I first got interested in India as a religion major at Bryn Mawr College (and Haverford) and classes I took with two wonderful men who ended up advising my undergraduate thesis on the epic Ramayana: Michael Sells and Steven Hopkins. Dr. Sells introduced me to Wendy Doniger’s work, and like so many others, I went to the University of Chicago Divinity School to study with her, and her warmth compensated for the Chicago cold.

Review Of Research Impact Factor : 5.7631(UIF) UGC Approved Journal No. 48514 ISSN: 2249-894X Volume - 7 | Issue - 12 | September - 2018 __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ STUDY OF BIOGRAPHY OF KARMVEER BHAURAO PATIL Dr . Sanjay Thorat Associate Professor, M. V. P. Kanya College, Islampur , Tal. Walwa, Dist. Sangli. ABSTRACT In India, there are not one but several literary traditions. They exist in literature simultaneously, but one of them represents the canonized crest. The others are not canonized and placed, obscurely. Ganesh Devy conceptualized the other, obscure, suppressed or sub-cultural literary phenomena by using the term para-literature (Of many Heroes, 134). This kind of institutionalization of literature has a greater connection with the power-structure and power-relations of the society we live in. The Bountiful Banyan, A Biography of Karmveer Bhaurao Patil (Anna), written by Barrister P. G. Patil, and Matthew's Karmveer Bhaurao Patil have been relegated to the category of para-literature and considered as non-literature because Bhaurao Patil(here-after Anna) as well as Barrister P. G. Patil (here-after Pee Jee) had never made a compromise with the Brahmanical codes : taboos and totems. KEY WORD: Karmveer Bhaurao Patil, literary traditions, Agri-Cultural metaphor, power-structure and power- relations. INTRODUCTION:- The canonized Indian literature has indeed been excessively in-group and obscurantist, and nativism, the concept advanced by well-known novelist, poet, critic Bhalachandra Nemade, represents an attempt to undo that damage and make it more widely accessible to Bahujan Samaj. Nativistic literary theory has its affinities with the ideology expounded by Phule and Gandhi both posed a danger to the greater Anglo- Sanskritic tradition by introducing a different system of moral concern and threatened to alter the characteristics of Indian Society by making its cultural periphery centre.

PREFACE This subject was chosen with a view to recording the work done by women in various phases of the freedom struggle from 1857 to 1947. In the course of my study I found that women of India, when given an opportunity, did not lag behind in any field, whether political, administrative or educational. The book covers a period of ninety years. It begins with 1857 when the first attempt for freedom was made, and ends with 1947 when India attained independence. While selecting this topic I could not foresee the difficulties which subsequently had to be encountered in the way of collecting material.

  • The Krishna Temple Complex, Hampi: an Exploration of Its Identity As a Medieval Temple in the Contemporary Context
THE KRISHNA TEMPLE COMPLEX, HAMPI: AN EXPLORATION OF ITS IDENTITY AS A MEDIEVAL TEMPLE IN THE CONTEMPORARY CONTEXT A Thesis Presented to the Faculty of the Graduate School of Cornell University In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Arts by Ashima Krishna January, 2009 © 2009 Ashima Krishna ABSTRACT Hindu temples in India have been in abundance for centuries. However, many have lost their use over time. They lie vacant and unused on vast tracts of land across the Indian subcontinent, in a time when financial resources for the provision of amenities to serve the local community are hard to come by. In the case of Hampi, this strain is felt not only by the community inhabiting the area, but the tourism sector as well. Hampi’s immense significance as a unique Medieval-city in the Indian subcontinent has increased tourist influx into the region, and added pressure on authorities to provide for amenities and facilities that can sustain the tourism industry. The site comprises near-intact Medieval structures, ruins in stone and archaeologically sensitive open land, making provision of tourist facilities extremely difficult. This raises the possibility of reusing one of the abundant temple structures to cater to some of these needs, akin to the Virupaksha Temple Complex and the Hampi Bazaar. But can it be done? There is a significant absence of research on possibilities of reusing a Hindu Temple. A major reason for this gap in scholarship has been due to the nature of the religion of Hinduism and its adherents. Communal and political forces over time have consistently viewed all Hindu temples as cultural patrimony of the people, despite legal ownership resting with the Government of India.

  • Talks with Ramana Maharshi
TALKS WITH SRI RAMANA MAHARSHI Volume One FOREWORD* The “Talks”, first published in three volumes, is now issued a handy one-volume edition. There is no doubt that the present edition will be received by aspirants all over the world with the same veneration and regard that the earlier edition elicited from them. This is not a book to be lightly read and laid aside; it is bound to prove to be an unfailing guide to increasing numbers of pilgrims to the Light Everlasting. We cannot be too grateful to Sri Munagala S. Venkataramiah (now Swami Ramanananda Saraswati) for the record that he kept of the “Talks” covering a period of four years from 1935 to 1939. Those devotees who had the good fortune of seeing Bhagavan Ramana will, on reading these “Talks”, become naturally reminiscent and recall with delight their own mental record of the words of the Master. Despite the fact that the great Sage of Arunachala taught for the most part through silence, he did instruct through speech also, and that too lucidly without baffling and beclouding the minds of his listeners. One would wish that every word that he uttered had been preserved for posterity. But we have to be thankful for what little of the utterances has been put on record. These “Talks” will be found to throw light on the “Writings” of the Master; and probably it is best to study them along with the “Writings”, translations of which are available. Sri Ramana’s teachings were not given in general. In fact, the Sage had no use for “lectures” or “discourses”.

  • Bharatanatyam: Eroticism, Devotion, and a Return to Tradition
BHARATANATYAM: EROTICISM, DEVOTION, AND A RETURN TO TRADITION A THESIS Presented to The Faculty of the Department of Religion In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Bachelor of Arts By Taylor Steine May/2016 Page 1! of 34! Abstract The classical Indian dance style of Bharatanatyam evolved out of the sadir dance of the devadāsīs. Through the colonial period, the dance style underwent major changes and continues to evolve today. This paper aims to examine the elements of eroticism and devotion within both the sadir dance style and the contemporary Bharatanatyam. The erotic is viewed as a religious path to devotion and salvation in the Hindu religion and I will analyze why this eroticism is seen as religious and what makes it so vital to understanding and connecting with the divine, especially through the embodied practices of religious dance. Introduction Bharatanatyam is an Indian dance style that evolved from the sadir dance of devadāsīs. Sadir has been popular since roughly the 6th century. The original sadir dance form most likely originated in the area of Tamil Nadu in southern India and was used in part for temple rituals. Because of this connection to the ancient sadir dance, Bharatanatyam has historic traditional value. It began as a dance style performed in temples as ritual devotion to the gods. This original form of the style performed by the devadāsīs was inherently religious, as devadāsīs were women employed by the temple specifically to perform religious texts for the deities and for devotees. Because some sadir pieces were dances based on poems about kings and not deities, secularism does have a place in the dance form.

As the holy occasion of Diwali is here and the atmosphere is filled with the spirit of mirth and love, here's hoping this festival of beauty brings your way, bright sparkles of contentment, that stay with you through the days ahead. Best wishes on Diwali and New year". DIWALI IN JAIN MYTHOLOGY Diwali is an important Hindu festival although it is observed by the Jains, Sikhs and Buddhists as well. Referred to as the “festival of lights,” Diwali marks the triumph of good over evil, and the lighting up of lamps is a custom that stands for celebration and optimism for mankind. Lights and lamps, specifically conventional diyas are an important aspect of Diwali celebrations. Fireworks are connected with the festival almost in every region of India. Diwali is of great significance in Jainism since on this day Lord Mahavira, the last of the jain Tirthankaras, achieved nirvana at Pavapuri. As per Jain custom, the principal follower of Mahavira, Ganadhar Gautam Swami, as well achieved absolute wisdom on this same day. Diwali is originally stated in Jain books as the date of the nirvana of Lord Mahavira. The earliest use of the word Diwalior Dipavali appears in Harivamsha Purana composed by Acharya Jinasena, written in Shaka Samvat 705. How is Jain Diwali Different from Hindu Diwali? The manner in which Jains commemorate Diwali differs in several ways from the one celebrated by the Hindus. There is an element of plainness in whatever the Jains do, and the festival of Diwali is different.
