Welcome, Guests Welcome, guests. Dear friends, family, professors, alumni, and other cherished ones, It’s that time of the semester again—when the weather gets warmer, the days get longer, the flowers start blooming, and PennSori puts on our Spring Show! Spinning off of the popular Korean talk show, You Hee-yeol's Sketchbook, we bring you Sori’s Sketchbook, a show that showcases PennSori’s very own talented members as the celebrities that they are. This semester, we have 8 returning members, along with 2 visiting members who will be performing with us for select songs. Combining talent and humor, we have prepared 9 English and Korean a cappella songs intermixed with musical skits and interviews to bring you a variety of entertainment. We want to thank our alumni for their continual support year after year. We also want to thank Jeremy, Phil, our photographers, and our ushers. Finally, we want to thank all of you in the audience for coming to support us. This show would not be possible without all of you. Tonight, we hope to show you the hard work and passion we’ve put into each of our songs and performances as part of our gratitude. We hope you will laugh with us, cry with us, and immerse yourself into the music and the moment as we will. Sit back and enjoy the show; we want you to all feel like stars by the end of the night. Love, P E N N O R I Program: First Act BTS Medley Groupshine Arr. Jin Young Cho What better K-pop idol group to start off our show with other than BTS? The legendary group has accumulated a vast international fanbase ever since their debut in 2013. From their many hits, we have selected Dope, Blood Sweat & Tears, Spring Day, and Fake Love. Enjoy as all PennSori members alternate between solo and background parts to perform this upbeat medley! Skit: Fame Performers: Jiyoon, Rachel Bae, Seyeon, Jin Skit: 시차 [We Are] Performer: JiWhan Don't Say Goodbye [Davichi] Solo. Hong Nguyen Arr. Rachel Cho Davichi’s hit 2011 ballad about reminiscing on a past love cemented the duo’s place as Kpop legends. The song was also Hong’s audition song for PennSori, so it holds a very special place in all of our hearts. After Hong’s amazing and heartfelt performance that rivals Davichi’s, this song will have a special place in your hearts as well. Mercy [Duffy] Solo. Jin Young Cho Arr. Jin Young Cho This fun, sassy, and catchy song is all about temptation and attraction. In fact, Duffy says the song is about “having feelings toward someone, whether it's a romantic feeling or just some chemistry that you don't want, and you desperately wanting to be released from that feeling." Enjoy as our youngest WomenSori member, Jin, shows off her mature voice in this crisp song! Skit: 쿨하게 헤어지는 방법 Performers: Nayoung, Rachel Cho I Will Survive [Gloria Gaynor] x 난 괜찮아 [Jinju] x Survivor [Destiny’s Child] Solo. Edward Kim (feat. Nayoung Kwon) Arr. Edward Kim If there’s anybody in your life who has the unmitigated gall to try to stop you from surviving, you tell them Edward said: go, now, go, ’cuz you’re not welcome anymore! This rendition of “I Will Survive” and “Survivor” incorporates both the American and Korean version of Gaynor’s classic into one fusion mix, featuring segments of Destiny Child’s hit song juxtaposed for a legendary closer to the first act. INTERMISSION Program: Second Act Skit: Like A Dream Performer: Rachel Bae Run To You [Whitney Houston] Solo. Jiyoon Kang Arr. Jiyoon Kang “Won’t you hold me in your arms and keep me safe from harm?” This legendary Whitney Houston song about longing and love is sure to captivate you, especially sung by Jiyoon, our perfect pitch diva. Sit back, relax, and prepare to enter an ethereal world as Jiyoon performs her beautiful arrangement in her ringing voice! Skit: Focus On Me Performers: Hong, Edward If You Leave Me Now [Charlie Puth ft. Boyz II Men] Solo. Steve Shin Arr. Rachel Cho Released in 2018, this poignant love song brings together Charlie Puth’s smooth vocals and the beautiful background vocals of Boyz II Men. Let our first senior soloist Steve show off his amazing voice that was made for crooning groovy ballads. Make You Feel My Love [Bob Dylan] Solo. Seyeon Kim Arr. Rachel Cho & Seyeon Kim The song beautifully describes what one would do to make others feel one’s love. Many artists, including Adele, have touched people’s hearts with the beautiful melody lines and lyrics. As her senior solo, Seyeon hopes to make everyone feel her love as she’s singing the song in styles that will melt your heart. Dog Days Are Over [Florence + The Machine] Solo. Rachel Cho Arr. Rachel Cho First released in 2008 in the band’s debut album, this song’s lyrics about finding happiness in unexpected places made a huge impression on indie rock fans around the world. Enjoy as Rachel performs her unique interpretation of the song as her senior solo. 나만 부를 수 있는 노래 (The Song Only I Can Sing) [바다 & 길] Solo. Nayoung Kwon Arr. Jin Young Cho Released in 2011 in a variety show called “무한도전” (“Infinite Challenge”), this beautiful song expresses true love, with lyrics such as “even if you think you can’t offer me much, don’t worry, I will always trust and be by your side, my love.” Prepare to watch in awe as Nayoung blesses your ears with her stunning and pristine voice in her final PennSori performance. Alumni Medley PennSori & Alumni Arr. Stephen Ahn Members Hong Nguyen, Soprano, Beat Hong is a junior in Wharton studying Finance and Social Impact & Responsibility. Born in Vietnam and raised in Houston, Texas, we’re so glad Hong made it to PennSori and serve as our president and marketing chair this semester. In Sori, we know her as someone who is obsessed with dogs because they’re cute, fun, and lovable (like her), as well as someone who constantly runs late to class but finds the time to post about it on her Insta story. Get ready to post her beautiful performance of “Don’t Say Goodbye” by Davichi on your story, in which she will be singing Vietnamese lyrics for the second verse and chorus. Jin Young Cho, Alto Jin is a sophomore in the College studying Psychology. Born in Seoul and raised in Manila, Jin is known in PennSori for wearing comfy clothes (do we ever see her in rehearsals in anything besides a hoodie and leggings?), being hungry 24/7, and being one of our talented music directors this semester. She loves eating anything that isn’t spicy, watching movies of all genres, and being happy in the moment. Beautiful inside and out, Jin never needs makeup to look good, but when she cleans up, we ALL drop our jaws. Get ready to drop your drop as you see her tonight performing “Mercy” by Duffy. Edward Kim, Tenor Edward is a junior in the College studying Architecture. Originally from Connecticut, Edward loves food and believes fried chicken is God’s gift to Earth. One of the kindest and hardworking people we know, Edward is the dad of PennSori, and while he is often wholesome, he can occasionally be extremely savage. His motto is “work towards your passion,” and you will see the culmination of his hard work in his performance of “I Will Survive/Survivor” by Gloria Gaynor and Destiny’s Child, which he arranged himself. Jiyoon Kang, Soprano, Alto, Tenor, Bass Jiyoon is a senior exchange student from Hitotsubashi University in Tokyo currently studying in the College. Born in Gwangju and growing up in Ulsan, Korea & Tokyo, Japan, Jiyoon’s personality and experiences make her extremely unique, and many people say that they’ve never met anyone like her. She is someone who brings her blow dryer to rehearsal to dry her hair, who plays piano without sheet music, and who takes naps twice a day. Tonight, she will be performing her arrangement of “Run To You” by Whitney Houston and further prove just how incredibly unique and special she is. Steve Shin, Bass Steve is a senior in the College studying PPE. Originally from Atlanta, Georgia, Steve is known for sleeping all the time and being either aloof, lost, or confused during rehearsal (sometimes all three). A wonderful friend, Steve is always down to hang out with you, whether to eat, drink, play video games, watch TV, or anything else that is chill, which is what he likes to do. However, for this concert, Steve’s performance is anything but chill—he is delivering an emotional and moving solo of “If You Leave Me Now,” by Charlie Puth. Grab some napkins and prepare your tear ducts. Seyeon Kim, Soprano Seyeon is a senior in the College studying Sociology. Originally from Daegu, Seyeon is an “og foodie” who absolutely cannot live without ddukbokki. She loves exploring and taking pictures, and her motto is to “seize the day,” which she does by always smiling and shining wherever she goes. For this concert, she’ll seize your night with her performance of “Make You Feel My Love” by Bob Dylan, giving you a combination of jazz, groove, emotion, and pure, raw talent. Rachel Cho, Alto Rachel is a senior in Wharton studying Finance and Statistics. Originally from New Zealand, Rachel talks with an endearing accent that PennSori loves to imitate. Rachel is someone who we kind of think of as a penguin—she’s incredibly cute, a bit clumsy, somewhat dorky, and kind of waddles when she walks.

  • The K-Pop Wave: an Economic Analysis
The K-pop Wave: An Economic Analysis Patrick A. Messerlin1 Wonkyu Shin2 (new revision October 6, 2013) ABSTRACT This paper first shows the key role of the Korean entertainment firms in the K-pop wave: they have found the right niche in which to operate— the ‘dance-intensive’ segment—and worked out a very innovative mix of old and new technologies for developing the Korean comparative advantages in this segment. Secondly, the paper focuses on the most significant features of the Korean market which have contributed to the K-pop success in the world: the relative smallness of this market, its high level of competition, its lower prices than in any other large developed country, and its innovative ways to cope with intellectual property rights issues. Thirdly, the paper discusses the many ways the K-pop wave could ensure its sustainability, in particular by developing and channeling the huge pool of skills and resources of the current K- pop stars to new entertainment and art activities. Last but not least, the paper addresses the key issue of the ‘Koreanness’ of the K-pop wave: does K-pop send some deep messages from and about Korea to the world? It argues that it does. Keywords: Entertainment; Comparative advantages; Services; Trade in services; Internet; Digital music; Technologies; Intellectual Property Rights; Culture; Koreanness. According to world leaders’ discursive construction of South Korea, South Korea is a site of “progress” that proves the superiority of the free market capitalist system for “developing” the so-called “Third World.” Challenging this contention, my dissertation demonstrates how recent South Korean cinema made between 1998 and the first decade of the twenty-first century rearticulates South Korea as a site of economic disaster, ongoing historical trauma and what I call impassible “transmodernity” (compulsory capitalist restructuring alongside, and in conflict with, deep-seated tradition).

My 2019/2020 TRAPE is about Korean Entertainment! I have been into K-Pop for almost 3 years and I have always been researching lots of things about Korean celebrities, their activities and their TV shows. Since I was a child, I have always been very curious about the Asian culture, even though I thought they were gangster. As I grew up, I have become more and more connected to their culture. Then, at the end of 2016, I listened to my first K-Pop song ever. I was 10 years old and I was in primary school when I got to know EXO, the first group I listened to. They had a big impact in my life because in that moment I was struggling mentally and physically... The only thing that made me happy, was listening to their songs! They would make feel better in every way possible, once I listened to some music, I’d completely forget about my worries. It was always the best part of my days. That is why I have grown attached to K-Pop songs, dances and singers. Table of contents WHAT WERE THE MOST FAMOUS SERIES (KOREAN DRAMAS)? (2019) IS IT POPULAR IN OTHER COUNTRIES? • K-Pop – What’S in a Name?
K-pop – What’s in a Name? ACADEMIC ARTICLE: ROUNDTABLE Ed. Dr. Candace Epps-Robertson Assistant Professor of English and Comparative Literature, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (United States) Ed. Katie Hulme Physicist by day, (amateur) poet by night (United States) Introduction What is a “Roundtable”? A rhizome consists of a multitude of interconnected nodes — and while those nodes might have more that connects than divides them, individual nodes don’t always agree. Learning means being in conversation with one another. Our perspectives are often shaped by our immediate networks and personal experiences, and it never hurts to take a step back and invite some voices to the table — especially those we might not otherwise hear, and those that bring wisdom, experience, and specialized knowledge into the conversation. “ ” 양극화 세상에서 가장 추한 꽃 “Polarization, the ugliest flower in the world” (Agust D, 2020) We have all witnessed heated and emotionally charged debates ignited by particular topics, fueled by the anonymity and speed afforded by social media. Discussions can quickly become polarized, and when polarization begins to play, discourse often begins to falter. Slowing down, taking time to pause, engaging with the ideas of others, and listening are essential to growth and creating new knowledge. The most famous roundtable is probably that of the legendary King Arthur, who insisted that his knights sit at a roundtable because such a table has no head — thus no designated leader. The purpose of a roundtable is to invite individuals into a space where the notion of “us” and “them” is temporarily dispelled, and each voice is given an equal platform to articulate itself.

  • South Korean Pop Style: the Main Aspects of Manifestation of Hallyu in South America
SOUTH KOREAN POP STYLE: THE MAIN ASPECTS OF MANIFESTATION OF HALLYU IN SOUTH AMERICA VIRGINE BORGES DE CASTILHO∗ ABSTRACT This article aims to understand the appearance of hallyu in the countries of South America (Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay and Venezuela). Other countries (Guyana and Suriname) and territories (Falkland Islands, South Georgian Islands, South Sandwich Islands and French Guiana) will not be discussed due to the lack of information about this phenomenon in these regions. After understanding the appearance of hallyu in these countries, it will be possible to analyze the differences and similarities of the phenomenon among the various nations. The study of this subject is relevant because it is an attempt to understand the impact that a culture that is so different can have on the peoples of South America. To arrive at a conclusion, it was necessary to divide the article into different parts: first, an understanding of the term hallyu and its initial appearance, and second, the understanding of hallyu in South America and its development in each country for which information is available. Due to the immense amount of information, only the most important points connected with the purpose of the article will be emphasized. Keywords: hallyu, phenomenon, South America, culture. INTRODUCTION Recently, the drama Pinocchio exhibited in the fourth chapter of series a dialogue between the characters Hwang Gyo Dong (Captain), Lee Young-tak and Jo Won-gu in which the word hallyu was mentioned. This term is not common among Korean dramas, however the mention was told by journalists (characters) that are part of the press, a situation similar to the actual origin of the word hallyu.

  • On-Chart Success Dynamics of Popular Songs
On-Chart Success Dynamics of Popular Songs Seungkyu Shin and Juyong Park Graduate School of Culture Technology and BK21 Plus Postgraduate Programme for Content Science, Korea Advanced Institute of Science & Technology, Daejeon, Republic of Korea 34141 In the modern era where highly-commodified cultural products compete heavily for mass consump- tion, finding the principles behind the complex process of how successful, “hit” products emerge remains a vital scientific goal that requires an interdisciplinary approach. Here we present a frame- work for tracing the cycle of prosperity-and-decline of a product to find insights into influential and potent factors that determine its success. As a rapid, high-throughput indicator of the preference of the public, popularity charts have emerged as a useful information source for finding the market performance patterns of products over time, which we call the on-chart life trajectories that show how the products enter the chart, fare inside it, and eventually exit from it. We propose quantitative parameters to characterise a life trajectory, and analyse a large-scale data set of nearly 7 000 songs from Gaon Chart, a major weekly Korean Pop (K-Pop) chart that cover a span of six years. We find that a significant role is played by non-musical extrinsic factors such as the established fan base of the artist and the might of production companies in the on-chart success of songs, strongly indicative of the commodified nature of modern cultural products. We also review a possible mathematical model of this phenomenon, and discuss several nontrivial yet intriguing trajectories that we call the “Late Bloomers” and the “Re-entrants” that appears to be strongly driven by serendipitous exposure on mass media and the changes of seasons.
