Wealth as grown in the United States in the past decade. September 2018 Tipping Point For the first time in history, a majority of the world is middle class or richer. Those in poverty or vulnerable to poverty are now a minority. By 2025, China will be home to more large companies than either the United States or Europe. By 2025 half of the world’s large companies—those with revenue of $1 billion or more—to be headquartered in emerging markets Rising middle class leads to more university students. 2000: 100 million students world-wide 2014: Over 200 million university students 2030: Projected 330 million students The number of China: - 2% international students India: - 1.2% studying in the United Korea: - 7.6% States fell another 2.7% Saudi: - 17.1% this past year. World’s 25 advanced economies From 2005 to 2014: 65% to 70% of those in the 25 leading economies had flat or declining incomes. From 1993 to 2005: Only 2% of the citizens in leading economies had flat or declining incomes Over 500 million people in the advanced economies have seen declines in their incomes in the past decade. In the United States 81% of the population fell in the stagnant or declining group. Federal Support • Appropriations per FTE remained flat last year. • Per-student educational appropriation last years were $7,853. • During the Great Recession per student funding fell by $2,000. A decade later is remains roughly $1,000 below pre-recession levels. Net Tuition • For the first time since the Great Recession, net tuition revenue per student did not exceed the rate of tuition. • Tuition has rising in all but two of the past twenty-five years. • US universities are seeing fewer international students • Tuition increases have been smaller Enrollment • Nationally enrollment dropped .3% last year. • Enrollment (FTE) declined in 35 states plus Washington DC • Enrollment is 6% lower than in 2011 Student debt exceeds $1.5 billion Pew Foundation studies show Pew Foundation studies show 84% Tuition costs are too high 65% Students are not getting the skills they need to succeed 54% Too much concern about protecting students from views they might find offensive 50% Professors are bringing their political & social views in classroom Scandals and Tough News Stories Just 20 universities raise 28% of all gifts These 20 universities educate 1.6% of the undergraduates in the United States.
