  • Companion to the Welsh Settlement in Patagonia
Companion to the Welsh Settlement in Patagonia Eirionedd A. Baskerville Cymdeithas Cymru-Ariannin/Wales-Argentina Society 2014 1 Copyright © Eirionedd A. Baskerville, 2014 2 Foreword The aim of this Companion is to gather together information from different sources about the life and work of some of the pioneers of the Welsh Settlement in Patagonia. These emigrants left their mark on every aspect of life in the settlement and many of their descendants still maintain its founding principles. The chief sources of the material are articles which appeared in Y Drafod, the Colony’s newspaper that first appeared in 1891 and is still being published today. Important information about the emigrants is to be found in the many books written on the history of the Colony, and for personal information on the families I am greatly indebted to the books of Albina Jones de Zampini. In addition to the census returns for England and Wales, 1841-1911, which are a valuable source for tracing an individual’s roots before emigrating, several websites contain family histories which have been contributed by descendants of the emigrants or other family members. Many of the reports contained in the Companion are based upon research commissioned by CyMAL, the sector of the Welsh Government that advises and supports museums, archives and libraries, and I am grateful for CyMAL’s permission to publish revised versions of those reports. By publishing the Companion on the web it will be possible to add to the information and revise it. Comments regarding corrections or additions are welcome. It is intended to add further reports from time to time on individuals, organizations and subjects relating to the Settlement, and suggestions regarding such additions would be welcomed.

Blwyddyn / Year Adroddiad Blynyddol / Annual Report 1966-67 Disgrifiad / Description Journal of the testator's father, Rev William Rees (1839-1919), Independent minister at Llechryd, co. Cardigan, who, with part of his congregation, had been locked out of the Old Chapel on 26 February 1880 (NLW MS 12863F). Two obvious reasons for this dispute were the minister's uncompromising views on temperance and his adherence to the teachings of Emanuel Swedenborg. The journal commences on 2 March 1880 and the last entry was made some time after Christmas 1917. The contents of this volume may be broadly divided into three sections: the author's career and the history of the new Tabernacle at Llechryd, 1880-1903 and 1911-[?1918] (pp. 1-228 and 457-94), a section which began with his wife's death, and contains, in addition to material such as that found in the first section, a considerable volume of verse, 1904-10 (pp. 229-436); and a brief sketch of his life (pp. 437- 57). Egwyddor bwysig ar gyfer ein gwaith yw ceisio cyflawni cydbwysedd democrataidd gwell yn ardaloedd pob cyngor fel y bo pob pleidlais a fwrir mewn etholiad, cyn belled ag y bo’n ymarferol rhesymol, o’r un gwerth â phob un arall yn ardal y cyngor. Byddai cyflawni’r nod hwn, ynghyd â mesurau eraill, yn arwain at lywodraeth leol effeithiol a chyfleus. Ar ddechrau’r broses arolwg hon, rydym wedi canfod gwahaniaethau sylweddol o ran cymhareb nifer etholwyr i gynghorwyr, nid yn ardaloedd cynghorau gwahanol yng Nghymru yn unig ond hefyd yn ardaloedd y cynghorau eu hunain.

  • Irfon and Wye Profile
! Introduction We are delighted that you have requested a copy of this profile. We hope this will give you an insight into life within our parishes and ministry area and answer any questions you may have. The Archbishop of Wales wishes to make two appointments of Priest in charge within this new Ministry Area. The parishes of Buallt and Upper Wye are made up of a number of rural communities and focus on the market town of Builth Wells. The parishes of Irfon Valley and Blaenau Irfon similarly contain a number of rural communities and focus on Llanwrtyd Wells, the smallest town in Wales. The Parish of Upper Wye The Area and Community The Upper Wye Benefice is made up of the villages of Newbridge on Wye, Cwmbach Llechrhyd, Llanafan Fawr and Llanfihangel Brynpabuan. The A470 is the major transport route running through the area. The Heart of Wales railway line also runs through the benefice. Newbridge is a quiet village. The Post Office and General Stores is the hub of the village, where you either join in someone’s conversation, or someone joins yours. It’s neighbourly and friendly. We have two village organised walks, on Tuesday’s and Thursday’s. Tuesday walks ‘Strollers’, takes us to various venues where the terrain is suitable for people who are less able to tackle the more challenging outings on Thursday’s. At Christmas we gather for a celebration lunch. There are two inns in Newbridge, both serve food. At the end of June, the village gathers for a carnival with a parade of floats and a happy gathering on the school playing field.

It was one of the earliest such assessments for eastern Wales and ultimately ten such reports were completed between 1992 and 1995, embracing the entire region for which CPAT had a remit. The imperative underpinning these surveys was laid out at the Brecknock Borough study in the following terms: It has long been recognised that development within town and village alike [might] disturb or obliterate significant information about the past, but a suitable response to a specific building development or other permanent land use change has usually been instigated, if at all, on an ad hoc basis.
