Fisher of tl~eAsian cyf~rinidfish gr7~u.tChagunius. Occ. I'ap. MILS.Zool. Univ. Michigan, 712.1-17, f1g.y. 1-3. 'I'he barbin genus Chagunim, previously monotypic, is redescribed and ex- panded to include three species. Examination of preserved material from the known range of the genus indicates that the original member of the genus, Clic~,yuniuscl~agunio (Ilamilton), is found only in the Gangetic plains of India, and two additional species are from Burma. Chagxniifi nicholsi Myers is known from the upper Irrawaddy basin of northern Burma, and Cl~agunimbail~yi, described herein, is found it1 the Salween basin of castern Burma and western l'l~ailand.l'he Burmese species resemble each other more than either resem- bles the Indian species, which has pronounccd cliffercnces in measurement proportions and several non-overlapping counts. These species have patterns of intestinal coiling which arc among the simplest found in barbins, and the type species has a single loop, the simplest pattern found in cyprinids. The genera most closely related to Chagunizrs are parapatric, with one genus in southeastern Asia and at least one other genus in peninsular India. The area is enriched with diversified fish fauna. A perusal of literature reveals that the area is blessed with 291 species under I 19 genera, 38 families and 12 orders (Hora, 1921 a, 1921b, 1936; Jayaram 1963, 1999; Malhotra and Suri, 1969; Sen, 1977, 1995, 1999a, 1999b; Bannan, 1984, 1992, 1994; Sen, 1985; S~gh & Singh, 1985; Vishwanath & Singh, 1986; Datta, Bannan & Jayaram, 1987; Talwar & Jhingran, 1991; Bhagowati & Biswas 1992; Vishwanath, 1993; Sen & Biswas, 1994; Nath & Dey, 1-997;· Keishing & Vishwanath, 1998, 1999; Kumar & Singh, 1998; Vishwanath et al. 1998; Vi &hwanath & Kosygin, 1999, 2000a, 2000b, 2001; Arunkumar, 2000a, 2000b; Arunkumar & Singh, 2000; Menon et al. 2000). The recorded and reported species along with their distribution in different States of N. E. India, status, type locality and endemicity have been shown in Table 1. Controversy is there regarding total number of species occurring in North East India. Regarding endemic species also differences of opinion persist. Sen (1985) identified 48 species to be endemic to Assam and neighbouring North Eastern States. Sarkar and Ponniah (2000) reported 66 species endemic to this region. Ghosh and Lipton (1982) reported 33 species as restricted in their distribution to this region. The present paper is worked out to get a total picture of the fish species recorded and reported so far from this region, as well as the endemic and threatened species occurring in N. -

Armbruster1 Abstract Background: Cypriniformes (minnows, carps, loaches, and suckers) is the largest group of freshwater fishes in the world (~4300 described species). Despite much attention, previous attempts to elucidate relationships using molecular and morphological characters have been incongruent. In this study we present the first phylogenomic analysis using anchored hybrid enrichment for 172 taxa to represent the order (plus three out-group taxa), which is the largest dataset for the order to date (219 loci, 315,288 bp, average locus length of 1011 bp). Results: Concatenation analysis establishes a robust tree with 97 % of nodes at 100 % bootstrap support. Species tree analysis was highly congruent with the concatenation analysis with only two major differences: monophyly of Cobitoidei and placement of Danionidae. Conclusions: Most major clades obtained in prior molecular studies were validated as monophyletic, and we provide robust resolution for the relationships among these clades for the first time. These relationships can be used as a framework for addressing a variety of evolutionary questions (e.g. phylogeography, polyploidization, diversification, trait evolution, comparative genomics) for which Cypriniformes is ideally suited. And this was suggested as one of the earliest records for fossil cyprinids. Unfortunately, this specimen is poorly preserved and reveals no more morphological information than its serrated last unbranched dorsal and anal fin rays. Recently, some new specimens were unearthed from the same locality, where C. maomingensis was discovered. In addition to the serrated dorsal and anal fin rays, these new materials also show that the pattern and shape of their pharyngeal teeth obviously differ from that of Cyprinus but resemble that of Procypris. However, its number of the branched dorsal fin rays and number of vertebrae are much less than that in Procypris. -

A total of 42 species has been recorded under 34 genera belong to 15 families. It reveals that Cyprinidae was the most dominant (33.3 %) followed by Nemacheilidae (14.29%); Bagridae and Cobitidae (9.52% each); Siluridae, Amblyciptidae and Badidae (4.76 % each) and rest of the families (2.38 % each). The relative abundance was highest in case of Chagunius chagunio (15.38%) followed by Barilius bendelisis (12.45%) whereas Puntius ticto, Amblyceps sp., Sistura sp., Balitora brucei, Kryptopterus indicus etc showed lowest value (0.37% each). As per IUCN, species status reveals that Least Concerned was 29; Data Deficient was 7; Near Threatened was 4 and Vulnerable were 2. Eighty (80) households in Padun and Adi tribes comprised of 223 females and 212 males were used for socio-economic survey. Study unfolded that majority (87.5%) households were joint families only with 12.5 % as nuclear families. Educational status revealed that illiteracy rate was 32.64%, 57.2% up to primary level, 6.20% up to high school level, 3.21% up to higher secondary and 0.67% up to graduate level. -

OCCASIONAL PAPERS OF THE MUSEUM OF ZOOLOGY THE UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN DISCHERODONTUS, A NEW GENUS OF CYPRINID FISHES FROM SOUTHEASTERN ASIA ABSTRACT.-Rainboth, WalterJohn. 1989. Discherodontus, a new genw of cyprinid firhes from southeastern Asia. Occ. Pap. Mzcs. 2001. Univ. Michigan, 718:I-31, figs. 1-6. Three species of southeast Asian barbins were found to have two rows of pharyngeal teeth, a character unique among barbins. These species also share several other characters which indicate their close relationship, and allow the taxonomic recognition of the genus. Members of this new genus, Discherodontzcs, are found in the Mekong, Chao Phrya, and Meklong basins of Thailand and the Pahang basin of the Malay peninsula. The new genus appears to be most closely related to Chagunizcs of Burma and India, and a group of at least six genera of the southeast Asia-Sunda Shelf basins. INTRODUCTION Among the diverse array of barbins of southern and southeastern Asia, there are a number of generic-ranked groups which are poorly understood, or which still await taxonomic recognition. The major forces behind the loss of biodiversity in freshwater are habitat degradation and fragmentation, increased sedimentation, exotic Naresh Lavudya species introduction, water abstraction, over-harvesting, pollution, and global climate change impacts. College of Fisheries Science, The diversity of Freshwater fish in the River Narmada and its tributaries in the central state of Madhya Junagadh Agricultural Pradesh has been reviewed. A total of 176 species from fresh water habitats out of which 13 orders, 46 University, Veraval, Gujarat, families, 107 genera, and 176 species. The order Cypriniformes represented the highest diversity with 79 India species followed by Perciformes (35 species), Siluriformes (32 species), Clupeiformes (11 species), etc. This review presents up-to-date information on freshwater fish diversity of the River Narmada. Freshwater fish diversity information could also provide a baseline for future more complex ecological studies, and planning the conservation and sustainable use of inshore inland water resources. Live NN Pandey specimens of C. chagunio were collected from the river Kosi Ramnagar, Uttarakhand, and reared in ICAR-Directorate of Coldwater cement tanks at ICAR-DCFR, Bhimtal. Histological profiling study of gonads was carried out for a Fisheries Research, Bhimtal, complete year. Different histological sections were quite similar and gave an indication towards the Uttarakhand, India prolonged breeding period with batch spawning habit of fish. Findings of the study suggest that the fish might have two possible breeding seasons and fish can successfully achieve its ovarian maturity under VK Tiwari captive condition. Testicular development indicates that the males of C. chagunio perhaps can produce ICAR-Central Institute of viable sperms round the year. Tor pituitoria was the most abundant fish it has 18.6 percentage compositions, it constitutes 0.169 and 18.65 percentage relative abundance. Tor tor was least abundant with percentage composition of 1.20, it constitutes 0.011 abundance and with 1.21 percent as relative abundance. The fish species diversity during study period was 0.889 which indicates the good diversity of the River Asan during study period.
