Present Status of Fish Biodiversity and Abundance in Shiba River, Bangladesh

Rahman Department of Fisheries, University of Rajshahi, Rajshahi 6205, Bangladesh Abstract: The study was conducted to investigate the abundance and present status of fish biodiversity in the Shiba river at Tanore Upazila of Rajshahi district, Bangladesh. The study was conducted from November, 2016 to February, 2017. A total of 30 species of fishes were recorded belonging to nine orders, 15 families and 26 genera. Cypriniformes and Siluriformes were the most diversified groups in terms of species. Among 30 species, nine species under the order Cypriniformes, nine species of Siluriformes, five species of Perciformes, two species of Channiformes, two species of Mastacembeliformes, one species of Beloniformes, one species of Clupeiformes, one species of Osteoglossiformes and one species of Decapoda, Crustacea were found. Machrobrachium lamarrei of the family Palaemonidae under Decapoda order was the most dominant species contributing 26.29% of the total catch. In the Shiba river only 6.65% threatened fish species were found, and among them 1.57% were endangered and 4.96% were vulnerable. The mean values of Shannon-Weaver diversity (H), Margalef’s richness (D) and Pielou’s (e) evenness were found as 1.86, 2.22 and 0.74, respectively. Relationship between Shannon-Weaver diversity index (H) and pollution indicates the river as light to moderate polluted. -

Abdus Salam Bhuiyan2 1Department of Fisheries, Faculty of Agriculture, University of Rajshahi, Rajshahi 6205, Bangladesh. 2Department of Zoology, Faculty of Life and Earth, University of Rajshahi, Rajshahi 6205, Bangladesh. *E-mail: [email protected] ABSTRACT Food and feeding habits of Rita rita collected from the Padda river in the north-western region of Bangladesh were investigated by examining the gastro-intestine contents of 744 specimens collected from May, 2010 to April, 2011. Their diet consisted of a broad spectrum of food types but crustaceans were dominant, with copepodes constituting 20.73%, other non-copepode crustaceans constituted 12.01%. The next major food group was insect (15.97%), followed by mollusks (14.76%), teleosts (12.98%) and fish eggs (8.608%). Food items like Teleosts, mollusks, insects and shrimps tended to occur in the stomachs in higher frequencies with an increase in R. rita size (up to 30.5 - 40.5cm), while fish eggs, copepods and non-copepode crustaceans tended to increase in stomachs at sizes between 10.5-20.5cm. Analysis of monthly variations in stomach fullness indicated that feeding intensity fluctuated throughout the year with a low during June and August corresponding to the spawning period. There is worldwide distribution of fresh water fishes. Pakistan is blessed with a diversity of fishes owing to streams, rivers, dams and ocean. In freshwater bodies of the country about 193 fish species were recorded. There are about 30 species of fish which are commercially exploited for good source of proteins and vitamins. The fish marketing has great socio economic value in the country. Unfortunately, fish fauna is declining at alarming rate due to water pollution, over fishing, pesticide use and other anthropogenic activities. Therefore, about 20 percent of fish population is threatened as endangered or extinct. All Mashers are ‘endangered’, notably Tor putitora, which is also included in the Red List Category of International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) as Endangered. Mashers (Tor species) are distributed in Southeast Asian and Himalayan regions including trans-Himalayan countries like Pakistan and India. The heavy flood of July, 2010 resulted in the minimizing of Tor putitora species Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and the fish is now found extinct from river Swat. -

A total of 42 species has been recorded under 34 genera belong to 15 families. It reveals that Cyprinidae was the most dominant (33.3 %) followed by Nemacheilidae (14.29%); Bagridae and Cobitidae (9.52% each); Siluridae, Amblyciptidae and Badidae (4.76 % each) and rest of the families (2.38 % each). The relative abundance was highest in case of Chagunius chagunio (15.38%) followed by Barilius bendelisis (12.45%) whereas Puntius ticto, Amblyceps sp., Sistura sp., Balitora brucei, Kryptopterus indicus etc showed lowest value (0.37% each). As per IUCN, species status reveals that Least Concerned was 29; Data Deficient was 7; Near Threatened was 4 and Vulnerable were 2. Eighty (80) households in Padun and Adi tribes comprised of 223 females and 212 males were used for socio-economic survey. Study unfolded that majority (87.5%) households were joint families only with 12.5 % as nuclear families. Educational status revealed that illiteracy rate was 32.64%, 57.2% up to primary level, 6.20% up to high school level, 3.21% up to higher secondary and 0.67% up to graduate level. -

Nahiduzzaman Department of Fisheries Biology and Genetics, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh-2202, 1Bangladesh Water Development Board, Dhaka, Bangladesh *Corresponding author Abstract: The study was conducted to determine a suitable feed for the desirable growth of riverine catfish Rita rita (Hamilton) from January 2006 to December 2006. The experiment had three treatments with three replicates. Nine chambers of the raceway each of size 1.83 × 1.12 sq meter were used. Local prawn, chicken viscera and commercially available formulated feed (CP) were supplied in treatment T1, T2 and T3, respectively at the rate of 7% body weight. Feed was supplied twice in a day in the early morning and in the evening as the fish is nocturnal. The initial average weight of fish was 24.93±0.05g, 24.99±0.04g and 24.95±0.04g in T1, T2 and T3, respectively. The final weight of the fish under three treatments was 425.05±1.04g, 425.68±1.05g and 177.61±1.45g respectively. The initial length was 8.48±0.02, 8.49±0.02 and 8.50±0.01 in T1, T2 and T3, respectively. The final length was 25.22±0.06 cm, 25.21±0.14 cm and 14.87±0.13 cm in T1, T2 and T3, respectively. -

A vast majority of them are found in South America or Africa; and most are confined to freshwater. Of these 30 families, 13 are found in India, Pakistan, Bangla desh, Sri Lanka and Burma. 46 genera are round in these countries of which only three occur outside India, although they are closely related to Indian forms. -

Tor pituitoria was the most abundant fish it has 18.6 percentage compositions, it constitutes 0.169 and 18.65 percentage relative abundance. Tor tor was least abundant with percentage composition of 1.20, it constitutes 0.011 abundance and with 1.21 percent as relative abundance. The fish species diversity during study period was 0.889 which indicates the good diversity of the River Asan during study period. In recent times it has also been admired as an ornamental fish. Recently due to over exploitation and loss of breeding grounds, populations of this fish species are facing the threat of extinction. Already it has been documented as lower risk near threatened in India and critically endangered in Bangladesh. So, to protect the populations of Rita rita , proper measures must be taken as quickly as possible on a serious note. The present report has been prepared to gather the available information on different aspects of Rita rita along with noting down the possible measures that can be considered for its conservation.
