The analysis of its gut content revealed the presence of 62 genera of planktonic life forms along with other animal matters. The organization of the alimentary tract and maximum Relative Mean Length of Gut (0.511±0.029 mm) indicated its carnivorous food habit. The peak gastro-somatic index (GSI) in winter-spring seasons and summer-rainy seasons indicated alteration of its feeding intensity. Furthermore, higher diet breadth on resource use (Levins’ and Hurlbert’s) with zooplankton compared to phytoplankton and Keywords: total plankton confirmed its zooplanktivore habit. 'I'he barbin genus Chagunim, previously monotypic, is redescribed and ex- panded to include three species. Examination of preserved material from the known range of the genus indicates that the original member of the genus, Clic~,yuniuscl~agunio (Ilamilton), is found only in the Gangetic plains of India, and two additional species are from Burma. Chagxniifi nicholsi Myers is known from the upper Irrawaddy basin of northern Burma, and Cl~agunimbail~yi, described herein, is found it1 the Salween basin of castern Burma and western l'l~ailand.l'he Burmese species resemble each other more than either resem- bles the Indian species, which has pronounccd cliffercnces in measurement proportions and several non-overlapping counts. These species have patterns of intestinal coiling which arc among the simplest found in barbins, and the type species has a single loop, the simplest pattern found in cyprinids. The genera most closely related to Chagunizrs are parapatric, with one genus in southeastern Asia and at least one other genus in peninsular India. E-mail: [email protected] Abstract Badis britzi, the first species of the genus endemic to southern India, is described from the Nagodi tributary of the west- flowing Sharavati River in Karnataka. It is distinguished from congeners by a combination of characters including a slen- der body, 21–24 pored lateral-line scales and a striking colour pattern consisting of 11 bars and a mosaic of black and red pigmentation on the side of the body including the end of caudal peduncle, and the absence of cleithral, opercular, or cau- dal-peduncle blotches, or an ocellus on the caudal-fin base. -

Department of Zoology, Government College University, Lahore Corresponding author e-mail: [email protected] ABSTRACT Pakistan has introduced several alien exotic fish species e.g. grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella), bighead carp, (Hypophthalmichthys nobilis), silver carp, (Hypophthalmichthys molitrix), common carp (Cyprinus carpio), gold fish (Carassius auratus), and three species of tilapia (Oreochromis aureus, Oreochromis mossambicus, Oreochromis niloticus) in warm waters along with two trout species: the rainbow trout (Onchorynchus mykiss) and the brown trout (Salmo trutta fario) in colder regions for specific purposes like sport fishing, yield enhancement and biological control of aquatic weeds and mosquitoes. The exotic species are becoming invasive in the freshwater biomes of the Punjab and other provinces of Pakistan by reason of their potent reproductive potential and feeding competitions with the native freshwater fish fauna. Resultantly the native fish species viz; Channa marulius, Wallago attu, Rita rita, Sperata sarwari, Gibelion catla, Cirrhinus mrigala and Labeo rohita, which are of economic value are under threat. The question in everyone’s mind was ‘is there a boat?’ After being assured that she was waiting on the banks of the Brahmaputra, we then drove through the busy office traffic to the tranquillity of the Hyatt Regency Hotel. After some rest, we left at 2pm to visit the Indian Botanic Gardens. On the drive, we got a glimpse of the busy city, a distant view of the Victoria Memorial, the Race course, the Fort William and even the famed Eden Gardens. We reached the Gardens and started off with the massive Banyan tree, which is still growing with the assistance of the government. The birds we saw there included Purple Sunbirds, Bronze-winged Jacanas, Red-breasted Parakeets, Asian Koel, Jungle Babblers, White-throated Kingfishers, Plain Prinia and Greater Coucal. It was warm, and jetlag was catching up, so we returned to our bus at 4.30pm and drove back to our hotel for a well deserved rest. -

ABSTRACT Present investigation reveals the existing fish fauna and their distribution pattern in the Tinau River, Western Nepal. A total of 35 species belonging to 25 genera, 12 families and 5 orders are recorded. Among collected fish species, Cyprinidae family was dominant constituting 81.73% of the total, followed by Cobitidae constituting 11.24% of the total collection. Physico-chemical and biological parameters of water were analysed to determine distribution, abundance and frequency of ichthyofauna. Chemical nature of water was found to be suitable with well-oxygenated and slightly alkaline pH range. -

Some interesting fish species reported from this river are Barilus shacra, Garra annandalei, Psilorhynchoides pseudecheneis, Badis badis, Olyra longicoudata, Tor putitora, Labeo dero and Anguilla bengalensis . Fish diversity of Triyuga river is rich, thus further extensive study is essential for their conservation. In the present study, the structure and morphometrics of alimentary canal of Rasborine fishes (11 species belonging to 8 genera) are described in relation to their food and feeding habits. The general pattern of alimentary canal was found to be similar but according to their feeding habit some morphological features was showing dissimilarity. The pattern and length of alimentary canal indicated inter and intraspecific variations. The stomach content analysis revealed that Amblypharyngodon mola , Aspidoparia morar, Barilius bendelisis, Esomus danricus mainly depended on vegetable matter whereas Barilius barila Hamilton, Barilius barna Hamilton, Barilius vagra Hamilton, Branchydanio rerio , Danio devario Hamilton, Raiamas bola, Rasbora (Rasbora ) daniconius daniconius depended on animal matter. It has been observed that the rasborine fishes are predominantly larvivorous i.e. feeding on insect larvae except for Raiamas which is a carnivore.
