Department of Zoology, Government College University, Lahore Corresponding author e-mail: [email protected] ABSTRACT Pakistan has introduced several alien exotic fish species e.g. grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella), bighead carp, (Hypophthalmichthys nobilis), silver carp, (Hypophthalmichthys molitrix), common carp (Cyprinus carpio), gold fish (Carassius auratus), and three species of tilapia (Oreochromis aureus, Oreochromis mossambicus, Oreochromis niloticus) in warm waters along with two trout species: the rainbow trout (Onchorynchus mykiss) and the brown trout (Salmo trutta fario) in colder regions for specific purposes like sport fishing, yield enhancement and biological control of aquatic weeds and mosquitoes. The exotic species are becoming invasive in the freshwater biomes of the Punjab and other provinces of Pakistan by reason of their potent reproductive potential and feeding competitions with the native freshwater fish fauna. Resultantly the native fish species viz; Channa marulius, Wallago attu, Rita rita, Sperata sarwari, Gibelion catla, Cirrhinus mrigala and Labeo rohita, which are of economic value are under threat. The Mekong River’s fisheries and biodiversity are threatened by major hydropower development and over-exploitation. Knowledge of river food web ecology is essential for management of the impacts created by anthropogenic activities on plant and animal populations and ecosystems. In the present study, I surveyed four tropical rivers in Cambodia within the Mekong River Basin. I examined the basal production sources supporting fish biomass in the four rivers during the dry and wet seasons and explored the relationship between trophic position and body size of fish at various taxonomic levels, among local species assemblages, and across trophic guilds. I used stable isotopes of carbon and nitrogen to estimate fish trophic levels and the principal primary production sources supporting fishes. My study provides evidence that food web dynamics in tropical rivers undergo significant seasonal shifts and emphasizes that river food webs are altered by dams and flow regulation. Seston and benthic algae were the most important production sources supporting fish biomass during the dry season, and riparian macrophytes appeared to be the most important production source supporting fishes during the wet season. -

E-mail: [email protected] Abstract Barilius ornatus, the first described species of Barilius from Southeast Asia, is redescribed with data from additional spec- imens from the eastern part of the Isthmus of Kra. The species is characterized by having 37–40 scales (rarely 36) along the lateral line, 6–7scale rows above the lateral line, 17–20 (rarely 16 or 21) predorsal scales, 12–14 circumpeduncular scales, anal-fin origin opposite from the 6th branched dorsal-fin ray to behind the last branched dorsal-fin ray, head depth 17–21% SL, predorsal length not more than 58% SL, dark pigment on dorsal fin concentrated at the edge of the branched dorsal-fin rays, generally short and thin rostral and maxillary barbels (if present), 1–2 small caudal spots or no caudal spot, and small dentary tubercles. With data from additional specimens B. ornatus can be clearly differentiated from Barilius barnoides Vinciguerra and Barilius infrafasciatus Fowler. The status of Barilius caudiocellatus Chu, and Barilius barila Hamilton are also discussed. 1342 ARTICLE Seasonal hydrology shifts production sources supporting fishes in rivers of the Lower Mekong Basin Chouly Ou and Kirk O. Winemiller Abstract: Seasonal hydrology is assumed to be an important reason why the Lower Mekong Basin supports highly productive and biodiverse inland fisheries. We used C and N stable isotope ratios of tissue samples to estimate primary production sources supporting fish biomass in the Mekong and three large tributaries in Cambodia. We used a Bayesian mixing model to estimate relative contributions of four alternative production sources — seston, benthic algae, riparian grasses, and riparian macro- phytes. There was little seasonal variation in isotopic signatures of riparian plants, but benthic algae and seston showed large seasonal shifts in carbon ratios. Seston and benthic algae were the most important production sources supporting fish biomass overall during the dry season, and riparian vegetation was the most important source during the wet season. Sources contributed differentially to biomass of trophic and habitat guilds, especially during the dry season. A dam on the upper Sesan River has changed hydrology, channel geomorphology, and other factors and, compared with the other three rivers, its fish biomass appears to derive from algae to a greater extent. Résumé : L’hydrologie saisonnière est présumée être une importante raison expliquant le fait que le bassin du cours inférieur du fleuve Mékong supporte des pêches continentales très productives et d’une grande biodiversité. Nous avons utilisé les rapports d’isotopes stables du C et du N d’échantillons de tissus pour estimer les sources de production primaire qui supportent la biomasse de poissons dans le Mékong et trois grands affluents au Cambodge. -

In Barilius bakeri the protein, carbohydrate, lipid, cholesterol, ash and moisture contents (%) were estimated as 14.74, 0.05, 1.44 0.41, 3.16, and 78.92 respectively whereas triglyceride, phospholipids and freefattyacids content (%) were 0.02, 0.03 and 0.4, respectively. In Barilius gatensis the protein, carbohydrate, lipid, cholesterol, ash and moisture contents (%) were estimated as 13.25, 0.08, 1.30, 0.26, 3.20 and 78.46, respectively whereas triglyceride, phospholipids and freefattyacids content were 0.03, 0.1 and 0.42 respectively. In Garra mullya the protein, carbohydrate, lipid, cholesterol, ash and moisture contents (%) were estimated as 13.45, 0.04, 1.58, 0.20, 3.23 and 79.70, respectively whereas triglyceride, phospholipids and freefattyacids content were 0.06, 0.04 and 0.42 respectively. In Labeo dussumeiri the protein, carbohydrate, lipid, cholesterol, ash and moisture contents (%) were estimated as 13.40, 0.04, 1.45, 0.22, 3.59 and 78.70, respectively whereas triglyceride, phospholipids and freefattyacids content were 0.05, 0.03 and 0.34 respectively. In Puntius sarana the protein, carbohydrate, lipid, cholesterol, ash and moisture contents (%) were estimated as 12.94, 0.02, 1.44, 0.21, 3.20 and 79.32, respectively whereas triglyceride, phospholipids and freefattyacids content were 0.04, 0.03 and 0.43 respectively. -

Faunal biodiversity is facing several threats of natural and human origin. These threats have brought widespread changes in species, ecosystem process, landscapes, and adversely affecting human health, agriculture and food security and energy security. These exists large knowledge base on fauna of Nepal. Initially, foreign scientist and researchers began explored faunal biodiversity of Nepal and thus significantly contributed knowledge base. But over the decades, many Nepali scientists and students have heavily researched on the faunal resources of Nepal. Collaboration and interaction between foreign researchers and Nepali researchers and students are important step for further research and conservation of Nepali fauna.
