CRITICAL HABITAT FOR CANTERBURY FRESHWATER FISH, KŌURA/KĒKĒWAI AND KĀKAHI REPORT PREPARED FOR CANTERBURY REGIONAL COUNCIL BY RICHARD ALLIBONE WATERWAYS CONSULTING REPORT NUMBER: 55-2018 AND DUNCAN GRAY CANTERBURY REGIONAL COUNCIL DATE: DECEMBER 2018 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Aquatic habitat in Canterbury supports a range of native freshwater fish and the mega macroinvertebrates kōura/kēkēwai (crayfish) and kākahi (mussel). Loss of habitat, barriers to fish passage, water quality and water quantity issues present management challenges when we seek to protect this freshwater fauna while providing for human use. Water plans in Canterbury are intended to set rules for the use of water, the quality of water in aquatic systems and activities that occur within and adjacent to aquatic areas. To inform the planning and resource consent processes, information on the distribution of species and their critical habitat requirements can be used to provide for their protection. This report assesses the conservation status and distributions of indigenous freshwater fish, kēkēwai and kākahi in the Canterbury region. The report identifies the geographic distribution of these species and provides information on the critical habitat requirements of these species and/or populations. Department of Zoology, Government College University, Lahore Corresponding author e-mail: [email protected] ABSTRACT Pakistan has introduced several alien exotic fish species e.g. grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella), bighead carp, (Hypophthalmichthys nobilis), silver carp, (Hypophthalmichthys molitrix), common carp (Cyprinus carpio), gold fish (Carassius auratus), and three species of tilapia (Oreochromis aureus, Oreochromis mossambicus, Oreochromis niloticus) in warm waters along with two trout species: the rainbow trout (Onchorynchus mykiss) and the brown trout (Salmo trutta fario) in colder regions for specific purposes like sport fishing, yield enhancement and biological control of aquatic weeds and mosquitoes. The exotic species are becoming invasive in the freshwater biomes of the Punjab and other provinces of Pakistan by reason of their potent reproductive potential and feeding competitions with the native freshwater fish fauna. Resultantly the native fish species viz; Channa marulius, Wallago attu, Rita rita, Sperata sarwari, Gibelion catla, Cirrhinus mrigala and Labeo rohita, which are of economic value are under threat. Spatio-Temporal Variation of Fish Assemblages in Babai River of Dang District, Province No. 5, Nepal
Our Nature | December 2019 | 17 (1): 19-30 Spatio-temporal variation of fish assemblages in Babai River of Dang district, Province No. 5, Nepal Punam G.C and Jash Hang Limbu Central Department of Zoology, T.U., Kirtipur, Kathmandu, Nepal E-mail:[email protected] Abstract Spatial and temporal variation of fish assemblages were investigated seasonally from October 2018 to May 2019. Fish assemblages were agglomerated with environmental variables both to spatial and temporal scales. Water temperature, dissolved Oygen, free carbon-dioxide, pH and water velocity of water of each site were measured. Based on analysis of similarities (ANOSIM), fish assemblages were significantly different in spatial variation but not in temporal variation. A total of 1,024 individuals belonging to 5 orders, 9 families and 15 genera and 24 species were collected. The dominated species were Puntius sophore, followed by P. terio, P. ticto and Barilius bendelisis. The Redundancy Analysis (RDA) vindicated that environmental variables of water temperature, pH, water velocity and free carbon-dioxide were found to be contributed variables to shape the fish assemblage structure of Babai River. The cluster analysis delineated that similarity between fish species decreases as the distance of sites increased. ABSTRACT Present investigation reveals the existing fish fauna and their distribution pattern in the Tinau River, Western Nepal. A total of 35 species belonging to 25 genera, 12 families and 5 orders are recorded. Among collected fish species, Cyprinidae family was dominant constituting 81.73% of the total, followed by Cobitidae constituting 11.24% of the total collection. Physico-chemical and biological parameters of water were analysed to determine distribution, abundance and frequency of ichthyofauna. Chemical nature of water was found to be suitable with well-oxygenated and slightly alkaline pH range. -

Some interesting fish species reported from this river are Barilus shacra, Garra annandalei, Psilorhynchoides pseudecheneis, Badis badis, Olyra longicoudata, Tor putitora, Labeo dero and Anguilla bengalensis . Fish diversity of Triyuga river is rich, thus further extensive study is essential for their conservation. The West Atlantic species was first noted off Damietta, on the Mediterranean coast of Egypt, in 2012. This species has already been recorded in the Mediterranean Sea from the southeastern Levant to the Gulf of Lion, France. The impacts of the introduction of P. aztecus on the local biota, and in particular on the native and previously introduced penaeids, are as yet unknown. Shrimp farmers at the northern Nile Delta have been cultivating P. aztecus since 2016, depending on postlarvae and juveniles collected from the wild in the Damietta branch of the Nile estuary.
