The General Assembly of New Brunswick: Its History and Records The Beginnings The History The Records in Context The History of the Sessional Records (RS24) The Organization of the Sessional Records (RS24) A Note on Spellings Notes on Place Names List of Lieutenant-Governors and Administrators Guide to Sessional Records (RS24) on Microfilm 1 The Beginnings: On August 18, 1784, two months after the new province of New Brunswick was established, Governor Thomas Carleton was instructed by Royal Commission from King George III to summon and call a General Assembly. The steps taken by Governor Carleton in calling this assembly are detailed in his letter of October 25, 1785, to Lord Stanley in the Colonial Office at London: "My Lord, I have the honor to inform your Lordship that having completed such arrangements as appeared to be previously requested, I directed writs to issue on the 15th instant for convening a General Assembly to meet on the first Tuesday in January next. In this first election it has been thought advisable to admit all males of full age who have been inhabitants of the province for no less than three months to the privilege of voting, as otherwise many industrious and meritorious settlers, who are improving the lands allotted to them but have not yet received the King's Grant, must have been excluded. … The House of Representatives will consist of 26 members, who are chosen by their respective counties, no Boroughs or cities being allowed a distinct Representation. The county of St. John is to send six members, Westmorland, Charlotte, and York four members each, Kings, Queens, Sunbury and Northumberland, each two members.

ABSTRACT Child labours constituted a visible and important element of the urban landscape in late 19th centuq Saint John, New Brunswick. Hundreds of children found employment selling newspapers, taking in sewing. driving teams or working in one of the cityfs numerous factories or retail establishments. Working-class boys and girls went to work because their families needed their earnings to make ends meet and because employers required a cheap and productive workforce. The visibility of urban child labourers and their harsh working conditions attracted the attention of local progressive-minded reformers. These men and women endorsed a collectivist philosophy which downplayed individual rights and stressed the need for state intervention in the private sphere to improve social conditions.

HAYSEED CAPITALISTS: PRIVATE BANKERS IN ONTARIO HAYSEED CAPITALISTS: PRIVATE BANKERS IN ONTARIO by STEPHEN EDWARD mORNING, B.A., M.A. A Thesis Submitted to the School of Graduate Studies in Partial Fulfilment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy McMaster University August, 1994 -- -- --- - --------------- DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY (1994) McMASTER UNIVERSITY (History) Hamilton, Ontario TITLE: Hayseed Capitalists: Private Bankers in Ontario AUTHOR: Stephen Edward Thorning, B.A. (University of Guelph) M.A. (McMaster University) SUPERVJSOR: Professor John C. Weaver NUMBER OF PAGES: viii, 502 ii ABSTRACT The structure of the Canadian banking system, and the establishment of strong chartered banks at a relatively early stage, have overshadowed banking institutions that operated outside the chartered system. The non-chartered or private banks can be categorized into three groups: the joint stock banks of the 1830s, the urban private bankers who appeared in the 1850s and after, and the small-town private banks of the post-1868 period. AJI three types of private banks were established to fill perceived niches in the chartered bank system. Those of the 1830s possessed an anti-establishment, hinterland bias. The urban private bankers specialized in savings and foreign exchange transactions, and often branched out into insurance, debentures, and ultimately stocks and bonds. The small town private banks began and prospered when the needs of small hinterland communities outpaced the inclination and ability of chartered banks to provide them with banking facilities. Unlike the urban private bankers, those in small towns offered a full range of banking services, and they often acted as insurance and real estate agencies as well.

This inquiry provides a review of a moment in Canadian political history and its statesmen that stands as an example of the practice that shaped Canadian nationhood. Sir John A. Macdonald and Louis Riel were the only “Fathers of Confederation” to meet in pitched battle. Their conflicts between 1869 and 1885 shaped two separate and core elements of the Canadian regime: English-French and East-West tensions. Through a lens of statesmanship, this inquiry analyzes the thoughts and actions of these two men.
