FCoT ARIC Ground Breaking

The FAC Chairman Donald Spiers attended the ground breaking ceremony for the new Aerospace Research and Innovation Centre at Farnborough College of Technology at the beginning of December and gave this speech:

‘I am delighted to be here today to take part in this ground-breaking ceremony for the new Aerospace Research and Innovation Centre.

Aerospace is a very important sector of the UK economy and is supported by a large number of small engineering companies, SMEs, based in the SE of .

The year 2020 has been a difficult year for Aerospace, in both operational and manufacturing, but it will bounce back strongly in 2021 and indeed the signs are already there. One of those signs is this centre, because the future is dependent on new ideas and that requires training young engineers in Research and Innovation to develop those new ideas.

FCoT has always been closely involved with the aerospace sector, and indeed Virginia Barrett is a Director of the Farnborough Aerospace Consortium, the trade association for SMEs in the Aerospace sector.

The Government also realised the importance of innovation in aerospace some years ago and set up the National Aerospace Technology Exploitation Programme (NATEP) to provide funding for SMEs to develop new ideas. FAC is involved in the administration of this programme and I have no doubt that engineers trained in this new facility will become involved in NATEP in the future.

This is a most appropriate place to build this new innovation centre. Farnborough is renowned as the home of British Aviation and just 200 metres up the road from where we stand is the spot where Samuel Cody commenced his take off run to make the first powered flight in the UK.

Today marks a really important step for the future of aerospace engineering in the UK and I congratulate FCoT on their great initiative.’

TIME FOR A CHANGE

David Barnes, chief executive of Farnborough Aerospace Consortium, addresses the subject of climate change and explains why he believes the aviation sector has an unjustified reputation when it comes to the gratuitous generation of excessive air pollution

In reality, civil air transport emits between just two and four per cent of the world’s harmful emissions.

Before Covid-19 emerged and disrupted the entire aviation and aerospace industry, we held our annual conference. A few words summed up the theme: the need to reduce carbon emissions and to counter climate change. As ever, we hosted speakers from a range of businesses, technologies and organisations and most, it seemed, were getting on board the flight to sustainability and carbon neutrality. Every generation of aircraft is around 20 per cent cleaner than the last and the sector is now embracing research into hybrid, electric, solar and hydrogen-powered aircraft. But the industry has an image problem; the public assumes we are carefree pollution generators and a far greater threat to the planet than is actually the case. When most of the world’s civil aircraft were grounded due to Covid-19, there was delight in some quarters. And yet, in reality civil air transport emits between just two and four per cent of the world’s harmful emissions. These percentages will reduce as research and development by aviation and aerospace companies discovers new and exciting innovations and methods.

At our conference we had a speaker from Airbus, which has recently unveiled three concepts for aircraft that will fly with minimal to zero emissions. Airbus believes these aircraft could be ready for service as early as 2035. The conference also heard from Rolls- Royce, which revealed that two thirds of its R&D funding is looking at “environmental impact” and that the business now sees itself as an “industrial technology company”. It has committed to be net-zero. David Barnes, chief executive of Farnborough Aerospace Consortium, addresses the subject of climate change and explains why he believes the aviation sector has an unjustified reputation when it comes to the gratuitous generation of excessive air pollution carbon across its operations by 2030. Nearer to home, Farnborough Airport has been carbon neutral since 2018.The progress towards lowering emissions is undeniable, but it requires a booming sector to fund further success. It follows that if we do not get back to where we were pre-Covid-19, the resources businesses have to fund programmes of change will diminish. If that happens, the research and development that looks at how to make a greener future for aerospace will obviously be affected. I believe that demand for air travel will recover from the Covid-19 setback and will continue to grow and that this should be embraced and encouraged by governments. By doing so, increased revenues will continue to be directed into R&D activities that will ultimately make air travel substantially free from excess carbon generation. Clearly, the sector’s down-turn since the coronavirus outbreak is not just a tragedy for those who have lost their livelihoods, but for the growth towards pollution-free air travel. By assisting the aerospace sector and those innovative and highly skilled businesses in its supply chain – mostly SMEs – the government would be helping to achieve its manifesto pledges on climate change. These businesses make a positive contribution to our national wellbeing and were able to divert resources in the early stages of the pandemic to distribute essential products such as hand sanitiser, ventilators and PPE.

We have a world-leading aerospace sector and by investing in it and offering further assistance during the pandemic the government would be helping the economy, as well as helping to create a greener sector. We add our voices to those pleading for government assistance on behalf of the aviation and aerospace industry. Please look favourably on the need to provide help to this vital sector; any help will be doubly rewarded.

Jon Dennison's bursary fund helping disadvantaged young people realise their potential The Engineering Development Trust (EDT) would like to thank the Aerospace Growth Partnership (AGP) and in particular, GKN Aerospace for their continued support to the Jon Dennison Bursary Fund. The bursary supports free places on EDT Insight into University Courses for selected young people, to encourage the next generation of STEM professionals.

Jon Dennison enjoyed a long and successful career in aerospace engineering, and this fund in his memory aims to honour the passion Jon had for helping disadvantaged young people to realise their potential.

The funding will be utilised for a further two years to support ‘Insight into University (Headstart/Inspire)’, a UK-wide programme, providing opportunities for 15 to 18 year olds to spend up to a week at a UK university (courses are currently virtual due to COVID-19 restrictions) prior to making their UCAS application. Young people completing the course receive Industrial Cadets Silver Awards. The courses are designed to increase confidence, help students make well informed decisions about their future & showcase a range of pathways to STEM careers. Participants get the chance to attend lectures, meet students and academics, visit local companies and participate in practical problem-solving activities. This unique blend of learning, networking and having fun provides the perfect mix to understanding what type of career might lie ahead and help students make a more informed UCAS application.

Jon’s final role was as Director of Government and External Affairs for GKN. He was also Chair of the Aerospace Growth Partnership (AGP) engagement group. GKN Aerospace contributed £20,000 to the bursary in Jon’s honour to the £36,000 fund, with the rest made up by other organisations on the AGP. Operation safeguard

The Vulcan to the Sky Trust, who were responsible for restoring XH558 to flight, have launched ‘Operation Safeguard’ a fundraising campaign with aim to raise £2.4 million pounds to build a new permanent base for the aircraft which currently located at Doncaster Sheffield Airport. As part of this effort, CBE+ have launched a STEM project in partnership with the trust and The workwise foundation. The project will begin to run in 2021 and will include innovation challenges around the restoration of the Vulcan parts currently housed in our facilities.

You can find out more about the project here https://cbeplus.com/school-children-set-to-support-vulcan-xh558s-operation-safeguard/

The Vulcan to the Sky Trust are looking for sponsorship around preserving the aircraft permanently as the centrepiece in a new Vulcan Experience hangar, telling the story of the Vulcan, the RAF’s V-Force in which she served – keeping the peace during the Cold War.

They will also commemorate the lives of the RAF people in South Yorkshire and Lincolnshire during that period of terrifying global tension. The hangar will also be a centre to inspire future generations where the trust will be working with schools, colleges and other organisations, to motivate and educate new generations of young people, focusing on the technical skills that our country needs so badly.

Paris Air Show 2021 – CANCELLED

It is with deep regret that we have decided to cancel the next edition of the Paris Air Show, which was due to be held from 21 to 27 June 2021. Sadly, we do not feel that developments in the circumstances linked to the COVID-19 health crisis will enable us to hold the next Paris Air Show in acceptable conditions. Uncertainty surrounds the approval that would be required from regulatory authorities, as well as the number of people that would be allowed entry and travel conditions for our exhibitors and international visitors. As you can imagine, this has been an extremely difficult decision to take, particularly in a period in which health authorities are predicting a relative improvement in circumstances in the coming months. Despite these assurances, we believe that many restrictions will remain in place next spring. Organizing this large-scale event requires considerable resources and it is our responsibility to ensure that we do not place ourselves in a position in which we would be unable to assume the considerable expenses still to be incurred. It is also our responsibility to prevent you from committing to the additional expenses required for your participation in the show. As announced, and in accordance with our commitments, the SIAE will, in the coming days, fully reimburse all fees you have paid so far. The SIAE will therefore take sole responsibility for the financial consequences of this decision. The entire SIAE team is extremely grateful for the trust you have placed in us and is committed to organizing an exceptional show in June 2023, in a period in which we hope aerospace activities will have returned to normal. Please do not hesitate to get in contact if you would like any further information. Yours faithfully,

PARIS AIR SHOW Team

During the CTOL flight test (November 2020) the aircraft took off at a length of 250 meters, demonstrating a great potential for Short take-off and landing (STOL). Take-off and landing were smooth, and the vehicle maintained a comfortable cruise at a speed of (90 mph) airborne for over five minutes. Witnesses were amazed at just how quiet this aircraft was compared to a helicopter.

The flight tests included evaluations on aircraft flight dynamics, performance as well as handling qualities. As the e-Starling adopts a semi blended wing body (BWB) design, it requires a low angle for take-off; it is important to understand when the aircraft is capable of taking-off and at which speed.

Apart from slow and fast taxiing on the as well as take-off and landing; the half scale demonstrator also performed banking manoeuvres in addition to tests on yaw, pitch and roll. The results show very stable in terms of handling quality.

Among other tests of subsystems were brake, telemetry, redundancy links, and ensuring the centre of gravity (CG) of the aircraft is at the correct design place.

The aircraft’s performance matched the predicted calculations made during preliminary and detailed design stages.

“The data provided by the flight tests were sufficient and invaluable for us to feed into fine tuning the aircraft for auto pilot to allow us to conduct a subsequent test on auto pilot mode,” says one of the engineering crew on-site.

Why a CTOL test for a VTOL aircraft? The ability to take off and land conventionally is an important part of the safety justification for VTOL aircraft, a key safety contingency.

Samad’s half scale e-starling CONTINUED…

Samad’s Aircraft Design Adviser, Professor John Fielding explains,

“Safety is key. We have investigated various safety challenges via CFD analysis and now through the flight tests using this 50% scaled CTOL prototype.”

Samad Aerospace is a disruptive green-tech start-up based in the UK. The company’s highly skilled and sought-after team of engineers are pioneering the development of the world’s fastest hybrid-electric vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) aircraft set to revolutionise civil air transportation globally. Samad Aerospace is now listed in the top 5 e-VTOL start-ups worldwide and is regarded as an essential and key contributor to the 3rd aerospace revolution.

Samad Aerospace has been developing its unique manned and unmanned aircraft with two scaled prototypes (10% and 20%) successfully built, flown, and showcased in reputable international air shows such as Singapore, Geneva and Farnborough.

Preparations for the e-VTOL flight tests are already well underway. 2021 will see the completion of the 50% e-VTOL version of the e-Starling.

Fairfax County in Northern VA lies between the Pentagon and Dulles Airport – the main international airport servicing Washington DC. It is home to the US HQ’s or DC offices of most large Defence, Aerospace and Security contractors including Northrop Grumman, BAE SYSTEMS and Rolls Royce. Over 500 UK companies have their US bases in Fairfax and given the business environment, many of them are in the same fields as FAC members.

Lying close to the nation’s capital and with a highly educated population, heavy on engineering skills, it is economically very similar to the area FAC serves. Fairfax County Economic Development Authority (FCEDA) is a member of FAC and is keen to help FAC members who are considering exporting to or expanding into the US.

FCEDA is putting on 3 short virtual conferences on space, aviation and defence in the first quarter of 2021 showcasing both companies in region, and the sort of companies we would like to attract to it. Attendance is free for FAC members.

Please save the dates, and a registration page will be opened shortly.
