The Sun Shines on Tickton Church Garden Party Volume 31 Number 4 August/September 2019 THE SUN SHINES ON TICKTON CHURCH GARDEN PARTY The sun shone down on the Church in Tickton’s Annual Garden Party and this was just the excuse people needed to come out and socialise, have fun, enjoy the refreshments on offer and help raise money for the Church. Many villagers gave up their time and talents to make the event a success, which helps significantly to maintain the life of the Church in the village. Organisers would like to thank all those who helped on the day, contributed prizes and items for the various stalls, or just turned up to support the event. Over £1,158 was raised. Well done! The afternoon of July 6th was a pleasant afternoon for the Garden Party which took place, for the third time, in... St Paul’s churchyard. Lots of people came through the gates to enjoy a cup of tea and a scone or cake and to spend their money at the various stalls. The plant stall and cake stall were their usual attractions for many and the tombola and bottle-bola stalls were also very popular. The tea counter and the energetic waiters covering the 100 metres from the kitchen counter to the tea-tables (well done guys) were kept very busy. £1,158 was raised for the church funds, which will help pay the bills over the next year or so. Thanks to all who helped or supported the event. REVD. PETER CLARK... As previously reported, Peter is becoming fully retired at the end of August. His last service as our Minister is... on Sunday August 25th, and we will certainly have a little ‘goodbye’ event at St Paul’s following the service. If you’ve known Peter in his time with us and would like to join us, we’d be delighted to see you, as will Peter! Our very best wishes go with Peter and Ailsa, as do our warm thanks for their ministry. His role as the Methodist side of the shared ministry we receive as an ecumenical partnership will be taken on by Revd Peter Cross, who is Superintendent Minister of the Beverley Circuit. GOD’S ACRE... This... is the new name for the project to set aside two areas of the churchyard and develop them as special ‘gardens’. The first of these is the wildlife garden, which will be on the north (road) side of the church, next to the village play area. The other will be the ‘quiet garden’, located in the back towards the boundary wall with Churchfields. Youngsters from Tickton School have been running a design competition to generate ideas for both new areas and there have been some very good entries, packed with ideas. The designs have been judged by Emma, who is a freelance artist working mainly with children and people with disabilities, and Peter, a freelance gardener/landscaper. Both live in the village and have given their time generously, and we’re sure they will continue to help the project as it moves forward. The next step is to mount a display in St Paul’s at an open evening on Tuesday September 24th where all interested can come along and see for themselves the ideas the children have put forward. There will be more details nearer the time via the church website and weekly newsletter, the school’s newsletter, and notice boards. We hope that work will be ongoing through the autumn and winter. This will involve the school as well as people from the church and anyone keen and interested from the wider community. Please come along in September and see for yourself what’s proposed. HARVEST FESTIVAL... This year’s Harvest Celebration will be on Sunday September 29th and will take the form of a Songs of Praise at... St Paul’s in the evening at 6.30. There will be no morning service that day. Food and non-perishable produce given for the occasion will go to Beverley Food Bank. Y Y6 LEAVERS’ SERVICE... This... took place on July 17th at St Paul’s.

ROADS AND TURNPIKE TRUSTS IN EASTERN YORKSHIRE by K. A. MACMAHON, Senior Staff Tutor in Local History, The University of Hull © East YQrk.;hiT~ Local History Society '96' ROADS AND TURNPIKE TRUSTS IN EASTERN YORKSHIRE A major purpose of this survey is to discuss the ongms, evolution and eventual decline of the turnpike trusts in eastern Yorkshire. The turnpike trust was essentially an ad hoc device to ensure the conservation, construction and repair of regionaIly important sections of public highway and its activities were cornple menrary and ancillary to the recognised contemporary methods of road maintenance which were based on the parish as the adminis trative unit. As a necessary introduction to this theme, therefore, this essay will review, with appropriate local and regional illustration, certain major features ofroad history from medieval times onwards, and against this background will then proceed to consider the history of the trusts in East Yorkshire and the roads they controlled. Based substantially on extant record material, notice will be taken of various aspects of administration and finance and of the problems ofthe trusts after c. 1840 when evidence oftheir decline and inevit able extinction was beginning to be apparent. .. * * * Like the Romans two thousand years ago, we ofthe twentieth century tend to regard a road primarily as a continuous strip ofwel1 prepared surface designed for the easy and speedy movement ofman and his transport vehicles.
