THE NATIONAL CONSERVATORY lays the groundwork of a thorough musical education and afterwards carries the structure to completion. Its pro- fessors have been appointed without consideration of expense, and wholly on their merits and reputation; and they form an Admirable Faculty, with no end in view but the impartment of knowledge and the consequent elevation of the public taste, with no other revenue than that contributed by lovers of music, and the very sma,; returns derived from the nominal tuition charged, and with no contribution whatever from talented candidates for admission unable to pay for high-class tuition. The Conservatory is open to all persons evincing sufficient talent to justify their and diligence admission. The full course of instruction covers from 3 to 5 years, but varies with the aptitude of students. The Vocal Course includes Singing, Solfeggio, Piano, Diction, History of Music, Deportment, Fencing, and Chorus. The Instrumental Studies include Piano, Organ, Harp, Violin, Viola, Violoncello, Contrabass, Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, Bassoon, French Horn, Cornet, Trombone, etc. An Orchestral Class is formed, and also a special Children's Solfeggio Class. Mr. MacDowell has written much piano music, a few songs, and the following: For orchestra, piano concerto, No. I, in A minor, played in Boston, with orchestral parts reduced for second piano, season of 1885-86; in Boston, with accompaniment of orchestra, April 3, 1888; has had frequent performances in other cities, both in this country and in Europe. Piano concerto, No. 2, in D minor, played for the first time in public in New York on March 5, 1888; by the composer with Boston Symphony Orchestra, Boston, April 13, 1888; by the composer, Paris (World's Fair), 1889. Symphonic poems: " Ophelia," New York (1886-87); "Hamlet," New York {1887-88); "Lancelot and Elaine," by Boston Symphony Orchestra, Boston, Jan. 11, 1890. Mr. MacDowell has completed a fourth symphonic poem ("Lamia") and a symphony ("Roland"). The suite played to-day, which is published by Arthur P. No American composer has been so honored in Europe by existing concert societies as Mr. MacDowell, especial favor having been shown the symphonic poems, "Ophelia" and "Hamlet," and the first piano concerto. The new suite, which was played for the first time September 24, at the Worcester (Mass.) Festival, shows Mr. MacDowell's strongly imaginative trend. It is the first work of symphonic proportions from his pen which has escaped the fetters of traditional form, the first wherein he gives himself unreservedly to that play of fancy of which we have a hint in the orchestral portions of his A minor piano concerto, and in the poetic " Lancelot and Elaine." For, how- ever stilted may have been the suite form of the ancients, the com- poser of to-day finds it a happy shelter under which he may exercise an almost absolute freedom. As an alternative to the prevailing literature, which has approached this form of musical theater mostly through broad surveys and detailed studies of a handful of well‐known masterpieces, my dissertation presents a montage of loosely connected, previously unconsidered case studies. Each chapter examines one or two highly significant, but radically unfamiliar, moments in the history of operetta during Austria’s five successive political eras in the first half of the twentieth century. Exploring operetta’s importance for the image of Vienna, these vignettes aim to supply new glimpses not only of a seemingly obsolete art form but also of the urban and cultural life of which it was a part. However, in terms of "discoverability" (to use the current term), it is not enough to represent each of the 600-plus titles in the online catalog.     What Did Women Sing? A Chronology concerning Female Choristers Laura Stanfield Prichard Northeastern University, Massachusetts, USA Women have been professional soloists throughout the history of church and dramatic music, but have not always participated in choral singing. This paper explores the roots of women as equal partners in mixed choral music, and brings to light several historical moments when women “broke through” older prejudices and laid the groundwork for the modern mixed chorus. The Early Church In ancient Egypt, music was under the patronage of male gods. Osiris was said to have traveled to Ethiopia, where he heard a troupe of traveling satyrs who performed with nine musical maidens, perhaps the prototype of the Grecian muses. Since ancient Greek poetry and music were inseparable, there are many examples of female performers ranging from the mythological (the Muses and the Sirens) to slave girls and the lyric poet Sappho (c630-570 BCE). Antiphonal religious singing came from Jewish temple practice and was introduced to Christian gnostic worship by Bardesanes (154-222 CE) in Persia, who composed psalms and hymns for the Edessa congregation (in imitation of David’s Psalter). The early Catholic Church found it necessary to confront and reinterpret this movement, which spread from Persia into Antioch and thence through the Orient. The Synod of Antioch in 379 specified that men and women could not combine together on the same melody, so most congregations were divided into two demi- choruses, one of men, the other of women and children, each delivering a verse of the psalm then uniting for refrains only rarely.
