CLONES, BONES AND TWILIGHT ZONES: PROTECTING THE DIGITAL PERSONA OF THE QUICK, THE DEAD AND THE IMAGINARY By JosephJ. Beard' ABSTRACT This article explores a developing technology-the creation of digi- tal replicas of individuals, both living and dead, as well as the creation of totally imaginary humans. The article examines the various laws, includ- ing copyright, sui generis, right of publicity and trademark, that may be employed to prevent the creation, duplication and exploitation of digital replicas of individuals as well as to prevent unauthorized alteration of ex- isting images of a person. With respect to totally imaginary digital hu- mans, the article addresses the issue of whether such virtual humans should be treated like real humans or simply as highly sophisticated forms of animated cartoon characters. Being a Non-Entity with Soon-Yi Previn Carl Hugmeyer Sometimes I realize that I’m not really putting myself out there. Being pleasant and considerate towards those around you is important, but part of me still thinks there should be something else going on. I find it hard to track down my contributions, my expressions, my statements. Partially read New Yorkers pile up and Netflix still recommends more documentaries than sitcoms. There is kale in the refrigerator, yes, and a $23 bottle of wine. Great. But is this supposed to be a model of beautiful living, to show to those who scream at their children, slapping them and then tugging at their arms as they wait for the tank to fill up at the gas station? To those who throw their Burger King wrappers out of the car window? It is dust accumulating, nothing, a mouse in the walls of the world that no one really sees or cares about except when it gets audibly worked up or so thoroughly stuck that a smell begins to emanate.

arcade OCTOBER 10 2008 • 12 the セ オ ・ ウ エ fo-r the top 10 comedic pe-rsonalities Derrick Tou s senior staffwriter This year's pursuit for the funniest comedic personalities was long, hard and filled with surprises. After searching and scouring You Tube and IMDb for days, a large list of funny people was created. After cutting said list from a group of hopefuls that included Bon-Qui- Qui, the creatarrrs of Pirate Facebook, and whoever has been setting off the Wall, Phelps and Irby fire-alarms, the following 10 comedians and comediennes were selected for keeping us rolling on the floor and slapping our knees. 1. Tina Fey No surprise here. Tina Fey is a maverick filled with that maverick energy, but she's got more to her name than the best Sarah Palin impression this side of Alaska. Governor Palin herself described the Weekend Update host and star of "Baby Mama" as "a ィ ッ ッ エ セ As the first female head writer of"Satur- day Night Live" and the creator of the hit NBC show "30 Rock," Fey has garnered five Emmys in the past two years as well as several hottest woman nomi· nations. Although male fans across the nation were disappointed when Fey traded her naughty secretary black-rimmed glasses for Palin lenses, she remains on the top of the current comedic scene. 2. Conan O'Brien Probably today's most prominent comedic writer and funniest male personality, Conan O'Brien earns the number two spot. A former writ- er for "Saturday Night Live" and "The Simpsons," Conan has hosted his "Late Night" show for over 12 years; however, the magna cum laude graduate of Harvard will replace Jay Leno next year as the face of late night tele\;sion and will most likely celebrate with his famous string dance.

  • Grateful Dead Until 1999, Whose Inspiration and Encyclopedic Knowledge of the Band’S Vaults Spawned the Fabled Dick’S Picks Series of Live Dead Concert Recordings
“Dick” was Dick Latvala, the official tape archivist for the Grateful Dead until 1999, whose inspiration and encyclopedic knowledge of the band’s vaults spawned the fabled Dick’s Picks series of live Dead concert recordings. Comprised of 36 volumes, Dick’s Picks follows the band on its long, strange trip through a multitude of eras, tours and venues, featuring handpicked shows that display the band at its visionary, improvisational height. Now, Real Gone Music is finally bringing this unparalleled cache of Dead concert brilliance to record stores— many of these volumes have never been available at music retail, and the others have been unavailable for close to a decade! GRATEFUL DEAD: Dick’s Picks Vol. 13—Nassau Dick's Picks Coliseum, Uniondale, NY 5/6/81 (3-CD Set) This show, which appears here in its entirety, was already some- thing of a legend among Dead collectors before archivist Dick Latvala selected it for Dick’s Picks Vol. 13. Only the second GRATEFUL concert (at the time) from the ‘80s to be tapped for the series, it was (and is) widely regarded to be among the best perform- DEAD ances of the decade, particularly notable for a stunning sec- ond-set sequence featuring “He’s Gone” leading into the SELLING POINTS: last-ever performance of the “Caution Jam,” which then morphed into the first performance of the “Spanish Jam” in five years. A real high point • Dick’s Picks Vol. 13 Presents One of the Most of the era. But before that, you are treated to a hidden (and fiery) 35-minute version of Legendary Dead Shows of the ‘80s “Scarlet Begonias”/”Fire on the Mountain” from a show at the same venue hailing from 1979, as well as a very tight first set winding up with a rollicking “Deal!” A good one for fans of Brent Myd- • Features an Amazing Second Set Sequence of land, too.

  • Andrew Dice Clay
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE MAY 25, 2009 RIVER ROCK CASINO RESORT PRESENTS ANDREW DICE CLAY LIVE AT THE RIVER ROCK SHOW THEATRE SATURDAY, OCTOBER 31 Richmond, BC – Andrew Dice Clay made a career out of being the most outrageous comic of his time. Before Dave Chappelle and before South Park, Dice was shocking audiences … breaking the rules with a never-before- seen style of hardcore comedy. He became the man to hate by every PC group in America. His rise to fame was meteoric — sold-out arenas, platinum albums, starring roles in films and TV specials. Dice has had his ups and downs throughout his career. At one point he was banned for life from MTV which ended up making him more popular than Madonna at the time. In 2007, Dice starred in the VH1 series, Dice Undisputed where his controversial macho image often collided with his real family life and the man behind all the limericks and leather was in a fight all his own. There he was … a devoted father of two teenage rocker sons dealing with a broken marriage, living with his new fiancée, Eleanor and then facing the everyday challenges of middle age. Recently he appeared on NBC’s The Celebrity Apprentice 2 … the charity he chose to play for was “StandUp For Kids” — a non-profit organization for homeless at-risk youth. He still enjoys performing his unconventional stand- up show to sold out audiences across North America. It’s been said that what you will see on stage is a very talented actor-comedian who will most likely shock you with what he has to say.
