Papal Basilica of Saint John Lateran

The Papal Basilica of Saint John Lateran, is the largest of the papal basilicas, the oldest church in , and is the cathedral church of Rome, and the seat of the Pope, the Bishop of Rome.

As it is in Rome proper, and not in Vatican City, the Pope more often celebrates Mass with a general audience at Saint Peter’s in Vatican City, and not at the Lateran Basilica.

The complex is filled with intricate marble-work, stone, statues, other artwork, and relics. Some items of note are:  Larger than life statues of the 12 apostles (the great convert, Paul, in place of Judas the betrayer)  One of 8 officially designated Holy Doors, which are cemented shut and only opened during Jubilee years, upon decree from the Pope  Many Papal tombs  The Holy Stairs - the marble steps, originally leading to Pilate’s praetorium in Jerusalem, upon which Jesus walked on his way to his trial before Pilate during his passion. Moved to Rome, they are covered with wooden steps to protect the ancient structure.

Also of note, as the cathedral church of Rome, the Archbasilica also stands as the mother church of the world, and it’s dedication date of November 9 is celebrated as a feast day in the .

All Communion Prep. 2nd Graders (Including Summer) Religious Education Families - Penance & Reconciliation Rehearsal and Lottery

On Tuesday, November 12, at 6 pm in Church, we will be having an important meeting for all 2nd graders and their parents. This includes all of our summer students and our current students in our Tuesday classes. Tuesday grades 1 & 2 students will not be having their normal classes that day.

The 2nd graders will be receiving their First Penance on December 8 during the parish's Advent Penance & Reconciliation Service. Our meeting on November 12 is meant to prepare all of us for that day.

In addition, at this meeting we will be holding our First Communion lottery. This is the mechanism we use to schedule the children for the time of their reception of the Sacrament of Holy Eucharist. Our First Communion ceremonies for 2020 will occur on April 26th and May 3rd at the 10 am and 12 noon Masses. NOTE: Your attendance to this event is Mandatory. In order to participate in the Lottery, a parent or designated proxy must be present. If neither is present, the child will be placed in an available spot after the lottery has been concluded.

Responsibilities include:  Placing bulletin ads, at the appropriate time of year, to solicit sponsoring families from the parish community;  Contacting the organizations and obtaining the gift recipient’s names and gift requests;  Giving the gift recipient information to and instructing the sponsors on shopping, wrapping, and delivery of gifts;.  Monitoring the progress of the shopping, wrapping, and delivery of the gifts to assure that the items will be ready for pickup or delivery at the times required by the distributing organizations.
