14/9/2018 Gilf Kebir - Wikipedia Coordinates: 23°26′29″N 25°50′23″E Gilf Kebir Gilf Kebir ( ) (var. Gilf alKebir, Jilf al Kabir) is a plateau in the New Valley Governorate of the remote southwest corner of Egypt, and southeast Libya. Its name translates as "the Great Barrier". This 7,770 km2 (3,000 sq mi) sandstone plateau, roughly the size of Puerto Rico, rises 300 m (980 ft) from the Libyan Desert floor. The name Gilf Kebir was given to the plateau by Prince Kamal el Dine Hussein in 1925, as it had no local name.[1] It is known for its rugged beauty, remoteness, geological interest, and the dramatic cliff paintings-pictographs and rock carvings-petroglyphs which depict an earlier era of abundant animal life and human habitation. Climate Gilf Kebir Plateau lies in the heart of the eastern part of the vast Sahara Desert, and, thus, gets some of the most extreme climates on Earth. This is the driest place on the planet, not only because the area is totally rainless (the annual average rainfall amount hardly reaches 0.1 mm) but also because the geological aridity index/dryness ratio is over 200, which means that the solar energy received at the ground evaporate 200 times the amount of precipitation received.[2] Rainfall may fall every twenty years in Gilf Kebir. -

The project was part of the cooperation program developed to establish the Egyptian Gilf Kebir National Park (GKNP) protected area. Given their bad state of preservation, the Italian conservation project focused on the Caves of Swimmers and Archers, located along the Wadi Sura. Although only very few studies of this kind have been carried out in the Saharan region, our work in the Gilf Kebir can be considered a pilot study, the results of which should be evaluated in the long term. Results obtained to date and reported in this paper provide analytical petrographic studies of the bedrock, a complete photographic and geodetic survey of the two sites, data from climate monitoring, along with a preliminary consolidation of some of the most at-risk areas of the two caves. -

INTRODUCCION 1 1. INTERES DEL TRABAJO Este trabajo estudia los restos óseos de mamíferos hallados en los yacimientos prehis- tóricos de Guipúzcoa. Con él pretendemos llenar el vacío existente en el conocimiento de la fauna de mamíferos de esta zona. Los trabajos de M. de la P. Graells y E. Harlé a finales del siglo pasado y comienzos del presente dieron una primera visión muy restringida de las faunas del Cantábrico. Los de I. del Pan, H. Obermaier, E. Hernández Pacheco, el Conde de la Vega del Sella, etc., por citar sólo los clásicos del primer cuarto de siglo, ampliaron mucho el conocimiento sobre las faunas de Asturias y Santander. Los de T. de Aranzadi, J. M. de Barandiarán y E. de Eguren añadieron más sumariamente datos de Vizcaya y de la parte occidental de Guipúzcoa. Era, pues, Guipúzcoa la provincia que contaba con menos datos para el conocimiento de su fauna cuaternaria de mamíferos. Por otra parte, la situación peculiar de la provirncia como región ligada al extremo occidental de la Cadena Pirenaica y como paso obligado durante la época glaciar entre el Continente y la Península, a la vez que presenta un acceso escalonado hacia la Meseta, más fácil que el que presentan Asturias y Santander, donde la Cordillera Can- tábrica forma una barrera más difícil al tránsito, ofrecía un campo amplio de interés paleonto- lógico, ecológico, climático y arqueológico. 2. The Role of Art, Abstract Thincking and Social Relations in the Human Evolution

Before the appearance of Homo sapiens sapiens, some pre-human genotypes that lived on the Earth, left material evidence concerning different events of their social, behavioural or artistic manifestations. One of the earliest proofs is the use of objects from the environment as primitive tools to extract bone marrow, action probably achieved by a population of Australanthropus olteniensis in Romania (Tetoiu, Bugiuleşti, Oltenia, about 2,000,000 BC). Current studies show that pre-human species originated in the African Rift Valley, which provided optimum benefits to its evolution and diversity. Proto-oceanic environmental quality and diet (rich source of polyunsaturated long fibres) ensured brain development and human evolution. Several pre-human species (Homo habilis, H. naledi, H. erectus, etc.) emerged and lived in this area prior to their migration to other continents. Fire making and use, both for cooking and protection against weather and wildlife, was the essential factor for human evolution. Benefiting from the cooked food, pre-human beings had access to richer food resources, which led to the increase of the skeleton, and, implicitly, of the skull and encephalus. This made possible the development of practical utilities, followed by abstract utilities, such as thinking and intelligence. Sexual dimorphism, the presence of the gene FOX-P2 and the development of language, social and tribal life led to the arrangement of the living spaces, family. -

BIBLIOGRAPHIE 16 2 I.Introduction Au cours du Paléolithique supérieur, plusieurs grottes situées principalement au sud de la France et en Espagne sont ornées de nombreuses peintures et gravures pariétales. Cet art attesté il y a plus de 30’000 ans en Ardèche (grotte Chauvet, Vallon-Pont-d’Arc) et encore plus anciennement dans le nord de l’Espagne, perdure pendant près de 20'000 ans. La découverte de certaines de ces cavités à la fin du XIXème siècle, a tout d’abord posé le problème de leur authenticité au vu de leur impressionnante richesse et de la qualité des figurations. Cette reconnaissance acquise au début du XXème siècle a impliqué l’ouverture au public de ces sites ce qui a contribué à fragiliser leur équilibre précaire. -

The main issues discussed by this new science centered on the origins of humankind, society, technology, art and religion; this intellectual process of the creation of ideas, concepts and categories was projected on the archaeological finds. When archaeological evidence was found that could be interpreted as proof of the existence of religious beliefs in Pa- leolithic times, there were various reactions and interpretations among prehistorians. The clash between evolutionism and the Judeo-Christian religious tradition was a key element in the development of these different discourses; these two viewpoints implied opposite ways of thinking about human nature. This paper discusses this diversity of narratives, specifically in the context of France, through the contributions of four authors, each with different ideologies and socio- political circumstances: Gabriel de Mortillet, Émile Cartailhac, Salomon Reinach and Henri Breuil.
