Opposition forces in : A trail of violence 1. Introduction

All opposition forces in Zimbabwe and beyond our boarders have been, for a long time, working either individually, separately or jointly in strategising for regime change in Zimbabwe. These forces include the following:

Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) anti-Senate Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) pro-Senate National Constitutional Assembly (NCA) Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) Crisis Coalition in Zimbabwe Women/Men of Zimbabwe Arise (WOZA/MOZA) Zimbabwe National Students Union (ZINASU) Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights Christian Alliance

When all these opposition forces realised that their concerted effort and agenda for regime change, were not bearing desired results; with advice from their sponsors and supporters in the West, they came up with the Broad Alliance whose agenda is still the same- to mobilise people for regime change in Zimbabwe.

Opposition forces in Zimbabwe: A trail of violence The Broad Alliance’s defiance campaign for regime change and over throw of the democratically elected Government of Zimbabwe has resulted in a plethora of criminal activities and political violence in the country, especially in , where people have been attacked, buses stoned and cars burned to ashes, police officers seriously injured, etc as seen in some pictures below.

2. Activities of the Opposition Broad Alliance

The leaders of all these opposition forces have been addressing numerous meetings across the country, drumming support for anti- Government activities and civil disobedience. With the hardships being faced by the people of Zimbabwe, the opposition forces intensified their campaign hoping to capitalise on these hardships. It has been observed that financial inducement is being used to attract people to attend meetings and participate in demonstrations. The pie chart below illustrates the distribution and levels of participation of each of the opposition forces in criminal activities.

i. On Saturday 10 February 2007, an MDC [Pro-Senate] campaign team led by MDC [Pro-Senate] President, was on a campaign trial to address rallies at 4 venues, namely Dumisa in Chiredzi south constituency, Davata, Chikombedzi and Gezani.

The four were traveling in metallic silver a Land Cruiser twin cab [registration to be ascertained] with Arthur himself behind the steering wheel, while Priscilla occupied the front passenger seat.

They were traveling along Rutenga/Sango Road which is a fairly wide gravel road and when they got to the 56km peg and at around 0700 hours, they alleged that the front right wheel burst, resulting in the vehicle serving sideways before overturning once and finally landed on its left side.

Priscilla sustained a broken shoulder and was also complaining of a painful right leg while Arthur and the other two occupants sustained minor injuries.

Priscilla was taken to Chikombedzi District Hospital from where she was later driven to Buffalo Range Airport in Chiredzi on a hippo Valley Estate ambulance and airlifted to Harare in a MARS rescue helicopter.

Arthur and the two passengers were treated and discharged, after which he made arrangements to have the wrecked Land cruiser to be towed away.

CONCLUSION

It remains a fact that the MDC inclined Save Zimbabwe Campaign also known as the Broad Alliance is a puppet grouping of Western powers who have since stepped up their efforts to effect regime change in Zimbabwe. As mentioned in the preceding segments,

1 January to 15 March 2007 47

Opposition forces in Zimbabwe: A trail of violence though the Save Zimbabwe Campaign sympathisers enjoy diplomatic privileges and immunity, the Government should treat them with caution.

The events and incidents narrated and pictured above are a clear testimony that the opposition forces under the Save Zimbabwe Campaign Project are on a confrontation path. They no longer have respect for law and order. Intelligence at hand indicates that they want to continue targeting the government and members of the security forces especially those who reside in high-density areas. In is reported that the opposition would want to put pressure on landlords to evict members of the security forces who are their tenants. There is need for decisive action to be taken against the organisers of these illegal actions. Whilst arrests are made, there appears to be no support from the judiciary who continue to either release accused persons on either free or make them pay very small bail, allowing them to go out and continue with their illegal activities. Meanwhile the culprits continue to receive massive moral and material support from Western countries and the European Union.
