Mottram St. Andrew Parish Council
Edward Charles Slater 05.06.1887 – 15.12.1917 Edward Charles Slater was baptised on the 5th June 1887 in Alderley Edge, the son of John and Mary Slater. In the 1881 census Edward was living in Welsh Row, Alderley Edge with his parents and his brother John and sisters Harriet and Emily. By 1901 the family had moved to Nether Alderley. By 1911 Edward had left home and was living with his wife Alice in Oak Road, Mottram St. Andrew who he had married in 1909 at All Saints Church, Siddington. Alice’s maiden name was Coppock and Edward’s occupation was a bricklayer. They had five children. Edward, Frank, Joey, Wallace Charles and Ellen. They also had a foster child named George. Edward was baptised in Prestbury in 1911, Joey in 1912, Frank in 1914, Wallace Charles in 1917 and Ellen in 1920. Edward enlisted in Mottram St. Andrew and served as gunner in the Royal Garrison Artillery (RGA) in the 63rd Siege Battery in France and Flanders and he was awarded the Victory Medal and the British Medal. His army number was 171714. Siege Batteries were equipped with heavy howitzers sending large calibre high explosive shells in high trajectory, plunging fire. The usual armaments were 6inch, 8inch or 9.2inch howitzers, although some had large rail or road mounted 12inch howitzers. The 63rd Siege Battery had two rail mounted 12inch howitzers and were sent to France on the 2nd March 1916. As British artillery tactics developed the Siege Batteries were most often employed in destroying or neutralising the enemy artillery as well as putting destructive fire down on strong points, dumps, stores, roads and railways behind enemy lines.

These have been dark and frightening days for so many people here in the Village; unable to see family, relatives, and friends across the country at a time when we all traditionally come together. What a difference a month can make as we seem, at last, to have something to look forward to. ‘The future is not cancelled’ appeared on my television screen recently and I liked that. Life moves on, perhaps not quite in the way we remembered it, but hopefully a step up from the misery of these past months. THE FUTURE’S Our huge thanks continue to go to all the staff working within the NHS, our Doctors and Nurses NOTand our Carers. And to our own Medical Centre staff who continue to provide us all with exceptional care and ensureCANCELLED that we all benefit from a well organised vaccine programme. Thank you too to all of our shop and supermarket staff and to our Council workers who have worked so hard to keep us fed and our lives well ordered. Brilliant work! Parish Councils are certainly in the news now! Whilst I cannot promise you will witness proceedings that will go viral on social media, I would like to invite anyone in Alderley Edge to sit in on our meetings if you would like to.

Guiding in Cheshire
Guiding in Cheshire When Baden- Powell began Scouts he little realised that girls would want to join in and that he would launch their own movement. The county of Cheshire at this time covered the areas from Derbyshire to the Wirral ( the ‘teapot’ county!) This short history only mentions units or places which involve our current county. Until the 1970’s all major events in Cheshire normally took place in Chester, often on the Roodee or at the Cathedral. For those of you who would like a fuller account of the history of guiding in Cheshire try to find a copy of The Trefoil and The Wheatsheaf, compiled by Marjory Corlett. The beginnings to 1913 Among the first pioneers in the North West was a Miss Mary Royden. The earliest records show there were troops in Macclesfield with Captain G H Owen and in Alderley Edge with Miss Tipping and Miss Whyman. A Miss G Blundstone wrote ‘I joined the Alderley Edge Guide Company in 1909. We were then called The Baden-Powell Girl Guides. We were a large company of about 150 strong with one Captain and Lieutenant. The Patrol Leaders were like the present Guiders, their Seconds were known as Corporals and wore three stripes on their arms. We all wore khaki hats’ 1st Alderley Edge Guides 1910 -1911. Third oldest company in the 1st Alderley Edge Guides 1911 world In Dec 1913 Miss Agnes Baden-Powell (B.P’s sister) ‘reviewed’ the Alderley Edge Company. The local Advertiser described it as ‘an epoch-making event which took place in the Wesleyan School… the company is the most efficient in the county’.
