Two of the seven UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Finland are located in Rauma. One of the sites, Old Rauma, is an extensive, uniform wood-built town district dating back to the Middle Ages. Old Rauma is a living town district where historical heritage lives on in perfect harmony with modern commerce and local residents. You’ll find an ample range of high-quality cafes, restaurants and charming little boutiques there. The idyllic ambience is complemented by museums, lovely gardens, the marketplace and the impressive medieval Church of the Holy Cross. The other World Heritage Site is the Bronze Age cairn cemetery of Sammallahdenmäki. The stone structures at Sammallahdenmäki – Bronze Age burial cairns built on rocks – bear evidence to the early settlement. Colourful maritime past Seafaring has for centuries brought an international flavour to the life of this small town. Rauma has always earned its livelihood from the sea and in addition has a long tradition of overseas trade, thereby adopting influences from faraway lands. The three tourist islands of Rauma – the Kylmäpihlaja lighthouse island, the Kuuskajaskari fortress island and the Reksaari nature island – are located just off the coast of the town. The archipelago of Rauma belongs to the Bothnian Sea National Park and provides a splendid, memorable setting for those who love the sea and the great outdoors.

Sorjonen (Yle, 2016- ) – or as it is known internationally, Bordertown – is perhaps the best example of this trend, having been distributed with subtitles in multiple languages via Netflix. This process will be the future trend. Different levels of collaborative work is going on in order to find new forms of organizing library services. In 2011 Lappeenranta University of Technology (LUT) and Saimaa University of Applied Sciences (SUAS) set up a joint library, Lappeenranta Academic Library (LAL). Arrangements and planning were carried out in 1,5 yrs. The project was many-sided as a joint library was to be created, not to merge two universities. The Academic Library is a part of LUT organization and the library personnel is employed by LUT.

    Professor Charles Sabel from Columbia Law School and Professor AnnaLee Saxenian from UC Berkeley argue in their book A Fugitive Success that Finland is quickly becoming a victim of its own success. In recent decades Finnish firms in the forest products and telecommunications industries have become world leaders. But the kind of discipline that made this success possible, and the public policies that furthered it, is unlikely to secure it in the future.
