Journal of Ancient Egyptian Interconnections Pa-Canaan in the Egyptian New Kingdom: Canaan or Gaza? Michael G. Hasel Institute of Archaeology, Southern Adventist University A&564%'6 e identification of the geographical name “Canaan” continues to be widely debated in the scholarly literature. Cuneiform sources om Mari, Amarna, Ugarit, Aššur, and Hattusha have been discussed, as have Egyptian sources. Renewed excavations in North Sinai along the “Ways of Horus” have, along with recent scholarly reconstructions, refocused attention on the toponyms leading toward and culminating in the arrival to Canaan. is has led to two interpretations of the Egyptian name Pa-Canaan: it is either identified as the territory of Canaan or the city of Gaza. is article offers a renewed analysis of the terms Canaan, Pa-Canaan, and Canaanite in key documents of the New Kingdom, with limited attention to parallels of other geographical names, including Kharu, Retenu, and Djahy. It is suggested that the name Pa-Canaan in Egyptian New Kingdom sources consistently refers to the larger geographical territory occupied by the Egyptians in Asia. y the 1960s, a general consensus had emerged regarding of Canaan varied: that it was a territory in Asia, that its bound - the extent of the land of Canaan, its boundaries and aries were fluid, and that it also referred to Gaza itself. 11 He Bgeographical area. 1 The primary sources for the recon - concludes, “No wonder that Lemche’s review of the evidence struction of this area include: (1) the Mari letters, (2) the uncovered so many difficulties and finally led him to conclude Amarna letters, (3) Ugaritic texts, (4) texts from Aššur and that Canaan was a vague term.” 12 Hattusha, and (5) Egyptian texts and reliefs. -

Anderson: Well, hello, everyone, and welcome to the third of our January public lecture series. I'm Dr. David Anderson, the vice president of the board of governors of ARCE, and I want to welcome you to a very special lecture today with Dr. Kent Weeks titled, Does the Past Have a Future: The Work of the Theban Mapping Project. This lecture is celebrating the work of the Theban Mapping Project as well as the launch of the new Theban Mapping Project website, www.thebanmappingproject.com. Before we introduce Dr. Weeks, for those of you who are new to ARCE, we are a private nonprofit organization whose mission is to support the research on all aspects of Egyptian history and culture, foster a broader knowledge about Egypt among the general public and to support American- Egyptian cultural ties. Since the ancient Egyptians were masters in metallurgy and were known throughout the ancient world as expert goldsmiths up to the twenty first century. Keywords: historical foundations of science and technology in Egypt. 1. Introduction For millennia, Egypt has made significant contributions to the progress of mankind and to the advancement of society. As a cradle of civilization and a beacon of knowledge, Egypt was a leader in scientific discoveries and innovations that defined the foundations of many fields including astronomy, chemistry, medicine, and of course engineering whose supremacy can still be seen today in the majestic architecture of the Pyramids and Karnak. The ancient Egyptians were enterprising people: they left many impressive monuments such as pyramids and temples; they were among the first nations to develop metallurgy, out of a need for tools; they were the first to extract copper from its ores and to extract gold by melting; they were experts in jewelry and gold working as is seen from the world-famous death mask of Tutankhamun.1 2. Ancient Egyptian Urban Planning and Infrastructure One indication of the Egyptians' advanced civilization is doubtless their knowledge of architecture and engineering (Figure 1). -

They are a testimony of the everyday life of the ancient Egyptians for which remains have been found throughout all of the temples of Karnak. Continuous occupation from the First Intermediate Period until the Late Roman Period is well attested at different locations in the complex of Karnak. Settlements are easily recognizable by their use of brick, especially mud-brick. The artifacts and organic remains found during new excavations of settlements give us a good idea of the inhabitants and their daily life. -

The ushabti’s appeal manifests itself on multiple levels – artistic, historical, and epigraphic. Department of Archaeology and Ancient History The Shrines of Gebel el-Silsila and their function Alexandra Boender BA Thesis, 15 ECTS in Egyptology Spring 2018 Supervisor: Sami Uljas Boender, A. 2018, The Shrines of Gebel el-Silsila Boender, A. 2018, Helgedomarna i Gebel el-Silsila ABSTRACT In 1963 came Ricardo Caminos to the conclusion that the shrines of Gebel el-Silsila functioned as cenotaphs. However, his views have never been reassessed by contemporary Egyptologists, which has led to the shrines still being interpreted as cenotaphs today. This study shows that the term cenotaph perhaps is not the correct word to use for their function. The focal point of this study are the decorations and inscriptions of the shrines, their religious character and the importance of the Nile. The following research compares the shrines of Gebel el-Silsila with similar shrines at Qasr Ibrim in order to reveal their similarities and dissimilarities. In order to achieve this, two publications were chosen, by Caminos, who assessed both sites in the 1960s and briefly compares the Qasr Ibrim shrines to Gebel el-Silsila. Furthermore, the shrines of Gebel el-Silsila resemble tombs in the Theban necropolis, where some of the tombs of the shrine-owners have been uncovered. For this reason, a comparison between the shrines and tombs has been made in order to reveal why the shrines cannot be tombs, and to display why the shrines still are mortuary monuments. Lastly, the following study assessed the shrine- owners in order to answer how the shrines were financed. However, although many of the shrine-owners are well-established noblemen of which several accounts are known, only their titles are taken into account for they provide a principal overview of their status. -

The sculptures are arranged broadly chronologically, and if you follow the tour sequentially, you will work your way gradually from one end of the gallery to the other moving through time. Each sculpture on your tour has a Touch Tour symbol beside it and a number. 2 Some of the sculptures are very large so it may be possible only to feel part of them and/or you may have to move around the sculpture to feel more of it.
