In 1920 she co- authored (with art historian G C Williamson) a study for the neoclassical painter Johan Zoffany that is considered the first in-depth study of the artist. She also co-wrote books on Angelica Kauffmann and William Peters, as well as writing a number of articles for The Connoisseur. In 1912 she married Charles Paget, 6th Marquess of Anglesey. This portrait is of her youngest sister, Lady Diana Manners (later Lady Diana Cooper). According to an inscription on the original backboard this drawing was made in 1903 and shows the 11 year old Lady Diana playing the role of Princess Katherine in Henry V. Diana was one of the great wits and beauties of her day and also one of the most photographed and painted. From her youth she had always been a keen amateur actress and participated in many plays and pageants performed with her family and friends. In 1919 she married the diplomat Duff Cooper (later Viscount Norwich) and in order to help finance her husband’s political career she also turned to the stage for a time. Nights Underground in Darkest London: The Blitz, 1940–1941 Geoffrey Field Purchase College, SUNY After the tragic events of September 11, Mayor Rudolph Giuliani at once saw parallels in the London Blitz, the German air campaign launched against the British capital between September 1940 and May 1941. In the early press con- ferences at Ground Zero he repeatedly compared the bravery and resourceful- ness of New Yorkers and Londoners, their heightened sense of community forged by danger, and the surge of patriotism as a town and its population came to symbolize a nation embattled. His words had immediate resonance, despite vast differences between the two situations. One reason for the Mayor’s turn of mind was explicit: he happened at that moment to be reading John Lukacs’ Five Days in London, although the book examines the British Cabinet’s response to the German invasion of France some months before bombing of the city got un- derway. Without doubt Tony Blair’s outspoken support for the United States and his swift (and solitary) endorsement of joint military action also reinforced this mental coupling of London and New York. But the historical parallel, however imperfect, seemed to have deeper appeal. Soon after George W. Bush was telling visitors of his admiration for Winston Churchill, his speeches began to emulate Churchillian cadences, Karl Rove hung a poster of Churchill in the Old Execu- tive Office Building, and the Oval Office sported a bronze bust of the Prime Min- ister, loaned by British government.1 Clearly Churchill, a leader locked in conflict with a fascist and a fanatic, was the man for this season, someone whom all political parties could invoke and quote, someone who endured and won in the end.

VERSION 2 Map Entrance Contents TBC Introduction Cecil Beaton (1904–80) was one of the great creative figures of the British twentieth century. Chiefly known as a photographer of portraits and fashion, through his work for Vogue magazine from 1924 to 1979, he was also recognised as a significant war photographer. An illustrator and caricaturist, a writer and commentator on taste and manners, Beaton was a theatre designer and art director of world renown and an influential stylist of his own homes. This exhibition focuses on Beaton’s early years. Born in Hampstead to a then prosperous timber merchant, Ernest Beaton and his wife Esther (‘Etty’), Cecil was first given a camera in 1914, aged ten. His first subjects were his mother and his willing sisters, Nancy and Barbara (‘Baba’). His transformation from middle-class suburban schoolboy to dazzling society figure against the backdrop of the Roaring Twenties and the Age of Jazz revealed a social mobility barely thinkable before the First World War. Here, then, are the Bright Young Things who brought an extraordinary era vividly to life and in so doing, nurtured and refined a remarkable photographic talent. The strength of his singular vision is such that, when we think of the Bright Young Things, we think of them in Beaton’s costumes, through Beaton’s lens and as Beaton’s friends. The three years at the Paris embassy was a dazzling period, much documented, during which Duff and his wife, the famously lovely Lady Diana, created a brilliant setting for sophisticated Anglo-French society in the then wretchedly depleted French capital. He was to prove a very popular ambassador, with Lady Diana helping to make his term of office a great social success. In January he was appointed Financial Secretary to the War Office , not a job he would have chosen. The diary is beautifully edited, with notes which provide just the right amount of information, and John Julius Norwich has written a perfectly judged introduction. William Hay, 18th Earl of Erroll. Performing Portraiture: Picturing the Upper-Class English Woman in an Age of Change, 1890–1914 by Susan Elizabeth Slattery A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of PhD Graduate Department of Art History University of Toronto ©Copyright by Susan Elizabeth Slattery 2019 Performing Portraiture: Picturing the Upper-Class English Woman in an Age of Change, 1890–1914 Susan Elizabeth Slattery Doctor of Philosophy Department of Art History University of Toronto 2019 Abstract This dissertation examines the use of portraiture by upper-class women of Britain in the period 1890—1914 as a means to redefine gender and class perception and to reposition aristocratic women as nostalgic emblems of a stable past and as symbols of a modern future. Through a range of portraiture practices, upper-class women promoted themselves as a new model for a continuing upper class that fulfilled a necessary social function in the altered circumstances of the new century. The period 1890—1914 was an era of change that challenged the existing social structure in Britain, destabilizing the hereditary entitlement of the ruling class and questioning the continuing role and relevance of the upper class. In the same period, changes in the technology of print and photography meant that, for the first time, there was the ability to disseminate portrait images through mass media on an economical basis, leading to a proliferation of illustrated journals and magazines. These circumstances provided an opportunity for upper-class women to reimagine the social and political potential of portraiture. ii My analysis examines different forms of media through intensive case studies arguing a progression from a traditional static image to a fluid interdisciplinary performative portraiture practice.
