Annual Activity Report 2014 Rapp 2015 ING_Layout 1 16/03/15 14:12 Pagina 1 ope n letter Dear friends, in the last year, the context in which we act has further worsened. The crisis is not only economic and financial anymore, but it has become cross-sectional and deep, with a strong social impact and a dramatic escalation of hostility on different frontlines. Moreover, this is now affecting every country in both Southern and Northern shores , in different forms and levels. In addition to the scenario we all have in front of us, we can record a regression in the cooperative momentum. As we discussed during our conference in Tunis last year, cooperation must certainly be rethought, but remains an essential condition of development. Even at that time, it was clear that we cannot just talk about cooperation: we must act upon with belief and imagination. This is what COPEAM has been doing during the past year. Co-productions, training, and partnerships: these are the areas of action we have focused on, with strong and direct commitment from members and partners, through their active contribution in terms of ideas and resources. We have set up multilateral ‘project-paths’, to translate the way we mean cooperation into real products. We have aimed at creating a real collaboration system within our network, more and more based on acting and on know- how. This has always been our method, COPEAM’s answer to the crisis that is gripping the region, and to the general political inattention to cooperation. Along this path, however, we cannot look away from what is happening in our sea. It is with anguish that we witness death and suffering every day. This is why we have decided to dedicate the Malta Conference, in 2015, to the exodus of populations in the Mediterranean, so that we can promote understanding and awareness necessary to inform responsibly on these issues, through an open dialogue amongst the actors involved - Institutions, Media and the civil society. Once again, we must all be more conscious of the strength and the responsibility that media professionals have towards our society, our young people and minorities, and we must work more closely to make the audiovisual cooperation a tool for comprehension and knowledge. Cómo los PSB interactúan con sus audiencias en los Países Balcánicos Occidentales Davor Marko (Analitika, Centre for Social Research, Sarajevo, Bosnia-Herzegovina) [[email protected]] http://dx.doi.org/10.12795/IC.2017.i01.08 E-ISSN: 2173-1071 IC – Revista Científica de Información y Comunicación 2017, 14, pp. 217 - 242 Abstract Struggling to cope with structural societal changes, digitalized news production, and the modified habits of fragmented media publics, public service broadcasters are expected to redefine the logic of their operations in order to regain the trust of citizens and engage them. This paper looks at how public service broadcasters in seven countries of the Western Balkans have embraced new approaches, technologies, and online channels to foster interaction with their audiences. This includes the analysis of their structures, the popularity of offline programmes, and the use of online channels to reach the public, on the basis of evidence, experiences and specific findings collected during the period 2014-2016, as part of the project implemented by the University of Fribourg (Switzerland) and the Centre for Social Research Analitika (Sarajevo, Bosnia-Herzegovina).

  • “MISSION EUROPE” a Bilingual Radio Fiction & a Quest
“MISSION EUROPE” A bilingual radio fiction & a quest “Mission Europe” aims to help young Europeans become familiar with other European languages and cultures. The project is based on an original concept drafted by RFI which enables listeners to follow a bilingual radio-drama with little to no effort. The listeners follow the story of a heroine who speaks in their native tongue, and must learn to get by in a foreign culture with another language. Radio France Internationale, Deutsche Welle and Polskie Radio have joined forces in order to produce three series of 26 episodes. “Mission Berlin”, “Misja Kraków” and “Mission Paris” are three quests, each set in a video game. The player must guide his avatar on dangerous missions in Gemany, France and Poland respectively, finding clues and winning points. The player and his avatar must not only face extraordinary challenges, but also cope with everyday problems as they navigate the cities. In order to do this successfully they must ask for help and unveil their enemies’ identities by learning communication skills appropriate to the country’s language and culture. The listeners follow the video game adventures from the point of view of the player and his avatar who – just like the computer - speak the listeners’ mothertongue. The three series will be broadcast in Europe by the three radio stations involved as well as any other radiostations that are interested. It is possible to produce versions of the series combining any two languages. The co-producers will ensure the promotion of this original concept, by targeting organisations such as radio stations, language learning centres, cultural exchange networks and tourist boards.

  • (Restoring Shortwave Radio) Bill 2017 Submission 53
Committee Secretary Senate Standing Committees on Environment and Communications PO Box 6100 Parliament House Canberra ACT 2600 Re: Australian Broadcasting Corporation Amendment (Restoring Shortwave Radio) Bill 2017 Dear Secretary, I live in Alice Springs and in the course of my work I travel all around Central Australia. Beyond about 70km from Alice Springs and in several select communities I can receive no radio broadcasts, and my only contact with the outside world is the occasional mobile phone reception area or wifi hotspot surrounding a roadhouse or station homestead or similar. I also have a satellite phone which I try to leave turned on when travelling. This way, if someone (e.g. my family) hears of a fire, flood or road closure in the area I am travelling in, they can try to get through to me and warn me. However, the disadvantages of this setup are 1) someone on the outside needs to have up-to-date information on emergencies which are unfolding, 2) they then need to know my whereabouts and understand that I may be in danger and need contacting and 3) They need to be able to get through to me on my satellite phone at the appropriate time. On point #3, there have already been times when I have been travelling with my satellite phone turned on and I have not received incoming calls. This is despite being connected to what is regarded as the most reliable satellite network. It is also possible that I will not have my satphone on at the appropriate time and there are any number of other inhibitions which might prevent me receiving an emergency call or update.

  • Landscaping Broadcast Media in Morocco: TVM's Viewing Frequency
New Media and Mass Communication www.iiste.org ISSN 2224-3267 (Paper) ISSN 2224-3275 (Online) Vol.59, 2017 Landscaping Broadcast Media in Morocco: TVM’s Viewing Frequency, Cultural Normalization Effects, and Reception Patterns among Moroccan Youth: An Integrated Critical Content Analysis Abdelghanie Ennam Assistant Professor, Department of English Studies, Ibn Tofail University, Kenitra, Morocco Abstract This paper approaches the Moroccan broadcast media landscape in the age of globally internetworked digital broadcasting systems through an integrated critical content-analysis of TVM’s viewing frequency, cultural normalization effects, and reception patterns as manifest among Moroccan youth. TVM is short for TV Morocco, a handy English substitute for SNRT (Societé Nationale de Radiodiffusion et de Télévision, National Radio & Television Broadcasting Corporation). The paper, first, presents a succinct historical account of the station’s major stages of institutional and structural evolution since its inception to date. Second, it tries to measure the channel’s degrees of watchability and needs satisfaction partially with a view to clarifying what this study sees as a phenomenon of satellite and digital migration of many Moroccans to foreign broadcast and electronic media outlets. Third, the paper attempts to demonstrate if TVM exerts any consolidating or weakening effects on the cultural identity patterns in Morocco purportedly resulting from an assumed normalization process. These three undertakings are carried out on the basis of a field survey targeting a random sample of 179 Moroccan second and third year students of English Studies at Ibn Tofail University, and an elected set of media approaches like Uses and Gratifications Theory, Social Cognitive Theory, Cultivation Theory, and Cultural Imperialism.
