r ) 251 NERVA. September 18, A.D. 96 saw Domitian fall victim to a palace plot, Imperial Rome's second dynasty ending in a frantic struggle on the floor of the Imperial cubiculum(Suet. Dam. 17). The resulting situation bore little resemblance to the state of affairs after the death of Nero. Now there were no generals on the march, no legions in revolt. Moreover, a dynasty had ended before and Rome had gone on, there was a precedent. A replacement was found in the seemingly neutral figure of M. Cocceius Nerva and the fraught phase of transition effected with a minimum of public distress. Domitian's had been a well managed murder. Time was not to be on Nerva's side. Aged sixty at his accession, he would not survive his climacteric year. But who at this stage was to know that? Why not build towards a future; had Augustus not died in his 76th year, Tiberius at 77, Vespasian at the end of his sixties? Work on Domitian's numerous building projects could be continued under the new princeps the honour from which would now accrue to Nerva. The Temple of Minerva and possibly also the encompassing Forum Transitorium needed completion. This they got (Martail, 10, 28; Suet., ! i 252 Dom.,5; Statius, Silv., 4,3,9-10; Eutropius7, 23, 5; Auy. Viet., Caes, 12.2; ClL 6. 953, 31213). Nerva thereby gained the honour of overseeing the dedicatory celebrations at the beginning of A.D. 97. Gained also was : J the opportunity to have his name inscribed on the entablature of the temple. -

There, as it happened, she met the sculptor, for, to say the truth, Kenyon had well noted the fair artist’s ordinary way of life, and was accustomed to shape his own movements so as to bring him often within her sphere. The Pincian Hill is the favorite promenade of the Roman aristocracy. At the present day, however, like most other Roman possessions, it belongs less to the native inhabitants than to the barbarians from Gaul, Great Britain, anti beyond the sea, who have established a peaceful usurpation over whatever is enjoyable or memorable in the Eternal City. These foreign guests are indeed ungrateful, if they do not breathe a prayer for Pope Clement, or whatever Holy Father it may have been, who levelled the summit of the mount so skilfully, and bounded it with the parapet of the city wall; who laid out those broad walks and drives, and overhung them with the deepening shade of many kinds of tree; who scattered the flowers, of all seasons and of every clime, abundantly over those green, central lawns; who scooped out hollows in fit places, and, setting great basins of marble in them, caused ever–gushing fountains to fill them to the brim; who reared up the immemorial obelisk out of the soil that had long hidden it; who placed pedestals along the borders of the avenues, and crowned them with busts of that multitude of worthies—statesmen, heroes, artists, men of letters and of song—whom the whole world claims as its chief ornaments, though Italy produced them all. -

ROME - VATIKAAN Als je het Sint Pietersplein opstapt besef je het plein en de basiliek helemaal niet zo maar in, het is misschien niet, maar je overschrijdt een staatsgrens. wel degelijk onafhankelijk, met een eigen staatshoofd, Sinds de "grote verzoening" immers van 1929, tussen regering, munt, politie, post, diplomatieke het (toen fascistische) Italië (van Mussolini) en de vertegenwoordiging. Vatikaanstad is trouwens iets Paus (Pius XI), ligt er in hartje Rome een groter dan dit complex: ook de grote basilieken (de onafhankelijke staat van 44 ha. groot en met + 1.000 Maria Maggiore, de Sint Jan van Lateranen en de Sint (bijna uitsluitend mannelijke!) bewoners. DISCOVERING A ROMAN RESORT-COAST: THE LITUS LAURENTINUM AND THE ARCHAEOLOGY OF 1 OTIUM* Nicholas Purcell St John's College, Oxford I. Introductory Otium - the concept of leisure, the elaborate social and cultural definer of the Roman elite away from its business of political and military power - is famous. We can see in Roman literary texts how the practice of otium patterned everyday experience, and how it was expressed in physical terms in the arrangement, on a large and on a small scale, of all aspects of Roman space. The texts likewise show that much of what we would regard as social life, and nearly all of what we think of as economic, belonged in the domain of otium. The complexities and ambiguities of this material have been much studied.2 Roman archaeology equally needs to be an archaeology of otium, but there has been little attempt to think systematically about what that might entail. Investigating the relationship between a social concept such as otium and the material culture that is the primary focus of archaeology must in the first place involve describing Roman culture in very broad terms. The density of explicit or implicit symbolic meaning, the organisation of space and time, degrees of hierarchy of value or prestige: it is at that level of generalisation that the archaeologist and the cultural historian will find the common denominators that enable them to share in the construction of explanations of Roman social phenomena. In this account, which is based on research into a particular locality, we shall have to limit ourselves to one of these possibilities. -

Kevin Lynch (1961: 173) The map I was born in a ‘city of seven hills’. Durham is one of the hilliest cities in the north of England. Yet even now I am unsure which of its contours add up to seven. It is hard to imagine any of them competing with the dramatic Cathedral peninsula, which gives the city its name (Figure 1.1). In 995 CE, when the monks of Lindisfarne on the Northumbrian coast were looking for a permanent resting place for the body of their bishop, Saint Cuthbert, he appeared to them in a vision directing them towards ‘Dunholm’ or ‘hill island’. Despite the vividness of this name (‘dun’ means ‘hill’, and ‘holm’ means ‘island’, in Anglo-Saxon), it took a milkmaid and her ‘dun cow’ to help them find their destination. Archaeological evidence points to a history of settlement in the Durham area long before the monks’ arrival. But it is at this point that the set- tlement becomes a city. When Durham acquired its seven hills is less clear. Yet knowing that there are seven is, in a sense, sufficient – safe, solid and strangely familiar. The concept underwrites Durham’s urban cre- dentials, taking us back to cities as old as Babylon and Jerusalem. As old as Rome. Small wonder that when writer DBC Pierre was describing the faded glories of Durham’s Miners’ Gala, the best-known and largest meet- ing of the mining community in England, he found it an obvious way of invoking tradition and summoning regional pride. -

Hadrian’s Religious Policy: An Architectural Perspective By Chelsie Weidele Brines March 2015 Director of Thesis: F.E. Romer PhD Major Department: History This thesis argues that the emperor Hadrian used vast building projects as a means to display and project his distinctive religious policy in the service of his overarching attempt to cement his power and rule. The undergirding analysis focuses on a select group of his building projects throughout the empire and draws on an array of secondary literature on issues of his rule and imperial power, including other monuments commissioned by Hadrian. An examination of Hadrian’s religious policy through examination of his architectural projects will reveal the catalysts for his diplomatic success in and outside of Rome. The thesis discusses in turn: Hadrian’s building projects within the city of Rome, his villa at Tibur, and various projects in the provinces of Greece and Judaea. By juxtaposing analysis of Hadrian’s projects in Rome and Greece with his projects and actions in Judaea, this study seeks to provide a deeper understanding of his religious policy and the state of Roman religion in his times than scholars have reached to date. Each year, the Eternal City’s numinous qualities draw millions of devout Christians to undertake a pilgrimage there just as they have for nearly two millennia. Visiting the most venerable sites, culminating with St. Peter’s, the Mother Church of Catholicism, the processional journey often reinvigorates faith among believers. It is a cleansing experience for them, a reflective pause in their daily lives and yearly routines. Millions more arrive in Rome with more secular agendas. With equal zeal they set out on touristic, educational, gastronomic, and retail pilgrimages. Indeed, when in Rome, I dedicate at least a full and fervent day to “La Sacra Giornata di Acquistare le Scarpe,” the holy day of shoe shopping, when I visit each of my favorite stores like so many shrines along a sacred way. Jacobs II and Diane Atnally Conlin Excerpt More information INTRODUCTION: “THIS PLACE WAS HOLIEST OF ALL” During or just after the reign of Rome’s first emperor Augustus (r. 27 b.c.e.– 14 c.e.), the Greek geographer Strabo penned his work Geographica and provided a valuable description of many of the peoples and places in the Greco-Roman world.1 When Strabo reported the “best accredited story of the founding of Rome,” he recounted the tale, “partly fabulous but partly closer to the truth,” of Rhea Silvia, a woman forced by her uncle Amulius to become a Vestal Virgin to assure she would remain childless, thereby pre- venting the birth of a potential political rival.2 Notwithstanding her sacred inviolability, Rhea Silvia was impregnated by the god Mars. She gave birth to Romulus and Remus, semidivine twin boys who grew into manhood, defeated Amulius and his sons, and established the foundations for the city of Rome. Lacking natural defenses and usable arable land, the location for Rome’s foundation was suitable “more as a matter of necessity than of choice.”3 For his part, Strabo forgave the early Romans for not beautifying their city, citing their understandable preoccupation with matters of government and war. The successors to Rome’s mythical founders would eventually reduce its vulnerability by building protective circuit walls and defensive gates as early as the fourth century b.c.e. By the reign of Augustus, however, Strabo noted that circumstances had indeed changed.
