Prison Break Correctional Liability Update May 2013 Housing Gang Members Together: Can a Blood and a Crip Just Get Along? By Susan E. Coleman Inmates who are assaulted by other inmates, whether cell mates, co- workers, or inmates on the yard, often sue prison administrators for failing to protect them. After all, the Eighth Amendment has been interpreted by the courts to include a duty to protect prisoners. However, a vague risk of harm simply because prisons are violent places which house dangerous criminals is not enough to create liability; something more specific is required. In the case of Labatad v. Corrections Corporation of America, et al, decided on May 1, 2013, the Ninth Circuit found that even housing rival gang members together was insufficient under the circumstances to find that defendants were deliberately indifferent. Labatad, a State of Hawaii inmate incarcerated at the Saguaro Correctional Center, operated by the Corrections Corporation of America Susan E. (“CCA”), was assaulted by his cellmate in July 2009. Naturally, Labatad Coleman is sued CCA for failing to protect him, alleging deliberate indifference to a partner at his safety under the Eighth Amendment. Because Labatad’s assailant the law firm was a member of a rival prison gang, this suit might at first blush seem of Burke, to have some merit, in that prison officials should be aware of Williams & longstanding prison gang rivalries. For example, in California it would Sorensen, be highly unusual to house a Black Guerrilla Family associate with a where she Mexican Mafia affiliate, and some would argue that a violent specializes confrontation would be foreseeable.

  • Orientalism and the Fantasy of Brotherhood in South Korean Cinema’S North Korean Action Hero Films
Vol. 1 Journal of Korean and Asian Arts SPRING 2020 Orientalism and the Fantasy of Brotherhood in South Korean Cinema’s North Korean Action Hero Films Kelly Y. Jeong / University of California at Riverside 【Abstract】 In the past decade there have been several popular South Korean action genre films that focus on North Korean spies or government agents. In these films, the North Korean protagonist has superhuman physical strength and combat capacity, as well as a kind of purity of ideology and integrity, while his Southern counterpart is older, wiser, and with more human frailties. I call this category of action sub-genre films North Korean action hero films. In this essay I argue that such films reflect the cultural unconscious of South Korea’s Orientalist fantasy about North Korean masculinity (and society), which especially manifests in the films’ plot as an intense focus on the North Korean action hero’s perfect, strong body, combined with a nod towards the ultimate superiority of his Southern counterpart. Further, the paper shows the centrality of biopolitics in the films’ plot, as both regimes subject the protagonists to neoliberal practices in order to intervene and manage their bodies and futures. The two protagonists often bond, in fact, via their anti-neoliberal characteristics. The paper will then conclude by examining the current South Korean action genre cinema in light of its use of female characters and diegetic time. 【key words】 South Korean action genre cinema, North Korean action heroes, Orientalism, Neoliberalism, Biopilitics, Gender Introduction n the past decade South Korean cinema has produced several popular action I genre films that focus on North Korean spies or government agents.

  • The Prison Break at Cowra, August 194 4
APPENDIX 5 THE PRISON BREAK AT COWRA, AUGUST 194 4 Despite the fact that Japanese troops had been schooled to die rather than surrender there were, by August 1944, 2,223 Japanese prisoner s of war in Australia, including 544 merchant seamen . There were also 14,720 Italian prisoners, mostly from the Middle East, and 1,585 Ger- mans, mostly naval or merchant seamen. During the years when it was known in Australia that most of the 21,000 Australian prisoners in Japanese hands were being under-fed an d over-worked and that many were dying of disease and malnutrition, the Japanese prisoners in Australian camps were well fed, were living in com- fortable quarters, and were thriving. By August 1944 10,200 Italian prisoners, including 200 officers, were working, without guards, on farm s or in hostels; some German prisoners were employed in labour detach- ments, but under guard ; the possibility of employing working parties of Japanese prisoners was being considered . At this time 1,104 Japanese prisoners were in No. 12 Prisoner of War Compound near Cowra, the centre of an agricultural district in the middl e west of New South Wales . This establishment was divided into four camps : "A" for Italians, "B" for Japanese, "C" for Koreans, and "D" for Indonesians. The whole compound formed an octagon about 800 yard s across, and the four camps were separated by two intersecting roads an d were fenced with thick barbed-wire entanglements about 8 feet high . The 22nd Garrison Battalion guarded the prisoners, its commander, Lieut - Colonel Brown,' holding also the appointment of commander of th e "Cowra P.W.

Each state‘s relative share of these programs is described. The geographic themes, patterns, and images from these programs are analyzed, with an emphasis on identity in five American regions: the Mid-Atlantic, New England, the Midwest, the South, and the West. The dissertation concludes with a comparison of television‘s senses of place to those described in previous studies of regional identity. iii For Sue iv CONTENTS List of Tables vi Acknowledgments vii 1. • Hybrid Korean Screen Cultures in the Mid-2000S Films a Bold Family (2005), Over the Border (2006), and Welcome to Dongmakgol (2005)
Concentric: Literary and Cultural Studies 46.2 September 2020: 217-245 DOI: 10.6240/concentric.lit.202009_46(2).0010 The North on Southern Screens: Hybrid Korean Screen Cultures in the Mid-2000s Films A Bold Family (2005), Over the Border (2006), and Welcome to Dongmakgol (2005) Bonnie Tilland East Asia International College Yonsei University Mirae Campus, Korea Abstract South Korean films that address North Korean themes have changed in the decades since South Korea’s democratization. Whereas films in the 1990s presented North Koreans as villains, by the 2000s most films took a more nuanced approach, presenting North Koreans as complex people with the potential to adapt in South Korean society. This paper analyzes three films from the mid-2000s dealing with North Korean issues (A Bold Family [2005], Over the Border [2006], and Welcome to Dongmakgol [2005]) in the context of the South Korean political landscape and North-South relations at the time. The paper argues that mid-2000s films represent a transitional point in the filmic depiction of North Koreans in South Korean film, opening up possibilities of hybridity in Korean identity. These films exhibit an almost ethnographic impulse to document everyday life, and as such contribute broadly to a visual anthropology of North-South Korean relations. Keywords South Korea, North Korea, film, family, visual anthropology 218 Concentric 46.2 September 2020 A grandfather on his death-bed watches home videos of Korean reunification on TV, and heals unexpectedly at the prospect of visiting his northern hometown . • Prison Break
© Níco Durón 2015 Prison Break As Faruk shaved the last section of his pubic hair, he accidentally cut himself with the double-bladed, disposable razor that was standard prison issue. The blood ran bright red through the remaining shaving foam, down his leg and into the plug hole of the gunmetal grey shower. ‘Herşey boktan ,’ he said out loud. He turned the tap to cold and splashed fresh water over the cut. ‘Today, four months down and six more years to go,’ he thought to himself. He had received his sentence on account of four counts of GBH, the procurement and sale of £100,000 of cannabis and cocaine, and for assaulting a police officer on the day he had been arrested. His young wife, Aruba, had decided to stand by him. Their two boys were too young to understand why dad wasn’t at home any longer. Separation from his wife and family, not incarceration, had been so far the greatest punishment for his crimes. And the only reason never to re-offend. He wrapped himself in his towel and opened the shower door, his black hair still wet and smelling of artificial apples. The prison officer took him back to his cell. He was actually looking forward to more time alone. He was neither philosophical nor a loner, but being locked up had provided him with the paradoxical freedom that comes with prison. It had given him the first opportunity in his adult life to slow down and to take stock of who he was, what he wanted and where he was headed.
