Biel The town of Biel, the metropolis of Swiss watchmaking, lies at the eastern end of Lake Biel, at the foot of the Jura in the delightful Lake Region. The charm of bilingualism, the intact old town and its location as the gateway to the three peripheral Jura lakes (Lakes Biel, Neuchâtel and Murten) make the town an attractive starting point, but also a destination for excursions. Switzerland’s only officially bilingual city is known as Biel to German- speakers and Bienne to French-speakers – a linguistic status that makes for a special charm. While the modern city reaches down to the lake, the intact Old Town with its 15th-century Gothic church nudges up against the hillside. As gateway to the Seeland lake region, Biel/Bienne also has plenty to offer active visitors. Feel-good food at 08:30 For more than 100 years, this bakery has been known for its Rüfi’s delicious rolls. Today, Chez Rüfi serves breakfast from 6.30am, Monday to Saturday – and everything is market-fresh, natural, and of outstanding quality. In the round 11:00 You couldn’t take sides here if you wanted to: the semi-circular shape of the Rotonde makes this restaurant the perfect meeting point for French- and German-speakers alike. If you reserve a table on the large terrace, you are in for a special treat: the lakefront views are enchanting. Chill out in style in 22:00 At the St. Gervais, a historic house that once belonged to the the Old Town monastery of Bellelay, you can now choose between 300 different drinks. Located in the heart of Biel/Bienne’s Old Town, it is also home to the Etage Club, which puts on an ambitious programme of culture and concerts ranging from jazz to hip hop. There are decorations for the Christmas tree, candles, glass, porcelain, ceramics, and earthenware, Advent wreaths, wooden toys, and crib figures. Glass blowers and ceramic artists show their skills. In a wooden hut and two heated tents sponsored by the Bienne citizen's community, you may taste specialties like wild boar sausage or forest warden tea, while enjoying the warmth of a fire.
