  • Ure Corridor Recreation Area
A The Marina. AREA 75 Approved UreUre CorridorCorridor recreationrecreation areaarea Feb 2004 (Ripon(Ripon ToTo NewbyNewby Reach)Reach) Description This is an area of intensive recreational use situated along the eastern edge of Ripon and covering almost 4km² of the Ripon Canal and River Ure corridor. The two water courses run almost parallel to each other in a north-south direction through the area to the point where they meet approximately one mile upstream of Newby Hall. The watercourses are well-wooded providing an intimate and attractive setting for boaters and walkers with dispersed views into the landscape beyond. A strong network of public footpaths provides easy access to the banks of the canal and much of the riverbank and is a valuable resource to the local community. Beyond the watercourses, the flat landscape is more open and management is a mixture of wild looking wetland with outgrown hedges and unkempt vege tation that contrast with the manicured appearance of the marina, sailing club and racecourse. Built form and boundary treatments display a variety of styles and modern materials that lack cohesion giving a somewhat chaotic appearance to this pleasant area. Most of the houses are built of pale stone, topped with roofs of red tiles - a type of architecture more usually found in North Yorkshire. With its riverside developments and air of prosperity, the Wetherby of today is a favoured place to live. The flat, arable landscape, too, is very different to Pennine Yorkshire. Here, on the fringes of the Vale of York, the soil is rich and dark and productive - the fields divided up by fences and hedgerows rather than dry-stone walls. The town has a long history. A brief glance at an Ordnance Survey map reveals that Wetherby grew up around a tight curve in the River Wharfe. Its importance as a river crossing was recognised by the building of a castle, possibly in the 12th century, of which only the foundations remain. The first mention of a bridge was in 1233. A few years later, in 1240, the Knights Templar were granted a royal charter to hold a market in Wetherby.

  • Stanley Cup and an Oaks, Johnson Wants It
WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 30, 2016 IT=S VALUE SIRE TIME by Bill Oppenheim STANLEY CUP AND AN OAKS, Here we begin the series where it becomes clear why, after meeting me for 10 minutes, the late John Finney asked: Awhat JOHNSON WANTS IT ALL was your name again? Opinionheim?@ Yes, here we talk about horses which for some reason or another strike me as >good value=, although--caution to commercial breeders--my definition of >good value= is probably more about producing racehorses than it is about sales results. So let=s begin. AMERICAN SIRES AT $25k+: Three Chimneys= Will Take Charge (Unbridled=s Song) remains at $30,000. This seems a very reasonable price. After running unplaced in all three legs of the Triple Crown, after which he had a record of 3-1-0, including a win in the GII Rebel S., from his first 10 starts, the Wayne Lukas trainee suddenly got good, seemingly as soon as the Triple Crown was over, and in his subsequent eleven starts he was Erik Johnson | Colorado Avalanche 4-5-1 with two Grade I wins (the Travers and the Clark H.), two Grade II wins, and four Grade I placings, including dropping a by Bill Finley nose decision to Mucho Macho Man in the GI Breeders= Cup Erik Johnson could be the co-owner of the filly who will be the Classic. Cont. p6 favorite in the 2017 GI Kentucky Oaks. But he=s hoping he can=t make the race. Business before pleasure. IN TDN EUROPE TODAY Johnson=s business is professional hockey.
