March 2019 Caranews The Voice Of The North Yorkshire Centre March 2019 Chairman’s Message Welcome to the first caranews of our new rally year. There are a number of interesting rally venues coming up in the near future, including Whitby West Cliff and a chance for all you competitive types to win a trophy at Darts and Doms. With Ripon racecourse, always a favourite and sensational seventies at Manfield to follow. I would ask you to spare a thought for the rally officers and book early if there is a function on, it's very difficult to plan if you don't know the numbers attending. Please make use of our voucher scheme this year as it helps to keep costs and workload down. Finally, I would like to thank you all for being patient with the upgrade of our website and service provider. Emails have been going astray but we are now back on track and I believe we have a website as good if not better than other centres in the club. Steve Graham Chairman, North Yorkshire Centre North Yorkshire Centre 3500th Celebration Rally This year marks the centres 3500th caravan rally which will be held at Wetherby Racecourse 18th - 22nd July. There will be a full rally program and preparations are still ongoing. Please help us mark this milestone in the centres history by joining us for the celebrations on the rally. Race night This year we are hosting a race night on Thursday 28th March at the Dormans Club, Linthorpe. All profits from the evening go towards the 3500th celebration rally. It’s a fantastic chance to socialise with fellow ralliers and have a great evening. Tickets are £1 and available from Merve Griffiths. Young Caravanners Chairman Report Our chosen charity this year is Zoe's place, we raised £166 at the handbook social to get us off to a great start of the year. Thank you to everyone who donated prizes. We are holding a raffle and cake stall this weekend at Brompton-on-Swale. All donations are greatly appreciated for all our events. Our next event will be a tombola at Ripon Racecourse at the Saturday night social. Throughout the year we will be running a tuck shop, please look out for me on the caravan rallies. We will also have several blind cards and bonus balls running throughout the year to help with our funds. I hope to see you all about on the rally field. If you would prefer fresh milk rather than the milk portions, please ask at the house If you require any extra pillows, please just ask. You will find spare blankets in each room in case you require them. You will also find situated in a drawer a hairdryer a radio alarm clock and rechargeable torch. If you require the use of an iron and ironing board please ask at the house. Breakfast is served between 8:30am and 9:00am. No allowance will be made for meals not taken. Most of the houses are built of pale stone, topped with roofs of red tiles - a type of architecture more usually found in North Yorkshire. With its riverside developments and air of prosperity, the Wetherby of today is a favoured place to live. The flat, arable landscape, too, is very different to Pennine Yorkshire. Here, on the fringes of the Vale of York, the soil is rich and dark and productive - the fields divided up by fences and hedgerows rather than dry-stone walls. The town has a long history. A brief glance at an Ordnance Survey map reveals that Wetherby grew up around a tight curve in the River Wharfe. Its importance as a river crossing was recognised by the building of a castle, possibly in the 12th century, of which only the foundations remain. The first mention of a bridge was in 1233. A few years later, in 1240, the Knights Templar were granted a royal charter to hold a market in Wetherby.
