postScriptum: An Interdisciplinary Journal of Literary Studies ISSN: 2456-7507 <postscriptum.co.in> Online – Open Access – Peer Reviewed – UGC Approved Volume II Number ii (July 2017) Platz, Jenny. “Confession and Branding ...” pp. 57-73 Confession and Branding of Anorexia and Bulimia in My Eating Disorder Story YouTube Videos Jenny Platz PhD Candidate in English, University of Rhode Island The author is a PhD candidate in English at the University of Rhode Island. She teaches film and literature at URI and has published on video games, Quentin Tarantino, and Buffy the Vampire Slayer. She is currently writing her dissertation on care of the self through disordered eating in non-fiction. Abstract When Googled “My Eating Disorder Story YouTube”, over 4,000,000 million results come up, depicting the growing popularity of the videos. The My Eating Disorder Story genre on YouTube draws attention to the self and the act of confession by making the face the central focus of the screen, and uses scrolling text, photographs, editing, and music to dramatize and create suspense regarding the words of confession. The videos’ creators are engrossed in the essentialist ideology and culture of branding on YouTube. YouTube is a business that profits from the success of YouTube personalities and the more popular a personality the more revenue YouTube will earn from views and advertisements. Because YouTube is about the “You” of the video by showing the “You” through the actual appearance of the YouTuber in the video or the appearance of the YouTuber through the personality of the videos and channel, YouTube is then about creating a specific personality or brand where the self is what is branded and sold to the public.

Your class was the most rewarding I’ve taken at Vassar, and motivated me to create this. To Professor Alex Kupfer, for saying, yeah, it’ll get done, but when? To Professor Phil Scepanski. I’m sorry this isn’t really about television. To Sally Josephine Keller Roberts. Even after nearly seven years, your empathy never ceases to touch my heart, and intellectual curiosity never ceases to inspire me. (See: the credits of episode 3.) 3 I hope to work on investigating the similarities between BuzzFeedVideo’s production strategies and methods popularized on older, commercialized media because I want to know more about the development and influence of corporate authorship on YouTube so that my readers may better understand how discourse within supposed “public spheres” changes when capital eclipses conversation.
