The Annual Quality Assurance Report (AQAR) of the IQAC 2010-2011 Part A

The plan of action chalked out by the IQAC in the beginning of the year towards quality enhancement and the outcome achieved by the end of the year.

A clear, compelling vision is essential for educational institutions. Educational institutions will achieve greater success with student learning, faculty and staff performance and parental satisfaction when an institution has a plan of action to achieve. Our institution has a clear vision and mission and all our programmes are well planned to achieve it. The plan of action chalked by IQAC for the academic year 2010- 2011 towards quality enhancement is as follows:

Details of the plans of the institution for the academic year 2010- 2011: 1. To begin lectures on the first working day i.e. 07.06.2011. 2. To ensure 100% utilization of lecture timings. 3. To prepare and publish academic calendar before the beginning of the academic year. 4. To improve the facilities to students in terms of academics, sports and co – curricular activities. 5. To encourage teachers to make use of modern teaching methods like audio- visual screen, role plays, simulation, field visits and surveys.

6. To make the subjects more interesting by conducting mock interviews, visits, dramas, presentations, projects and the like. 7. To provide extra coaching for subjects which are difficult by conducting sessions other than prescribed by the university. 8. To keep the guardians updated about their wards performance and suggest ways to improve the same. 9. To appoint guardian teachers for the weak students. 10. To help meritorious students achieve rank at the university exams. 11. To identify weak students and encourage mentoring by management, corporate guests, teachers and students. 12. To identify talented students and encourage students to participate in competitions at different levels. 13. To recognize student grievances and promptly redress them. 14. To provide infrastructure comparable to international standards. 15. To improve accessibility of carefully selected print and non-print resources via library OPAC and other exceptionally responsive services. 16. To encourage teachers to participate in workshops, seminars at state, national and international level. 17. To encourage our staff to register for research and provide facilities for the same. 18. To continue with the Centralized Assessment and Centralized Question Paper Setting Programme for effective functioning of the Examination Cell. 19. To arrange special programmes for non-teaching staff. 20. To continue with our social endeavours to strengthen our initiatives for social development. 21. To voice our opinions on various issues concerning the society and spread out social awareness through our College Magazine.

22. To conduct greater number of seminars and workshops of national and international importance at our campus. 23. To encourage cross cultural learning through our international exchange programme. 24. To organize visits for the students to various research centres for advanced knowledge in the field of biotechnology. 25. To strengthen the institution-industry linkages. 26. To improve schemes for the financially backward students. 27. To care for the environment by creating more awareness.

The IQAC has taken initiatives towards fulfillment of the above objectives which have been stated in the following pages. Progress was made in the following areas during the year:

 Academic Calendar (2010-11) has been prepared before the beginning of the first term of the academic year 2010-11.  To bring out the true potential of every student in intellectual, cultural, creative and physical aspects we have been continually improving upon facilities for teaching-learning, sports and cultural aspects through forums such as Students Council, Gymkhana and other associations.  Parent - teacher meetings were organized regularly to discuss monthly attendance, results of weekly test and overall academic performance in college.  Regular up gradation of laboratories were ensured by procuring latest version computers for computer labs and latest technology based equipments for biotechnology laboratories.  Classrooms were upgraded with latest technology and facilities for enabling teachers to make use of modern technology in teaching.

 To give full support for the improvement of the academic performance of the students, extra lectures were arranged for students were identified as weak students.  Guardian teacher system and mentoring of students, who need special attention, was carried out.  The meritorious students were guided under Advance Learner Programme. Students were asked to solve University question papers for past three years and these were assessed by the teachers.  Grievance Cell aptly redressed genuine grievances to the satisfaction of the students.  Augmentations of infrastructural facilities were carried out on regular basis.  Library Collection including books, Journals, Bound Volumes, Project reports, Audio Visual Aids, CD-ROM, Question Papers, and Syllabus was updated for the benefit of students.  Management extended their support to teachers who were pursued advanced studies in terms of financial aid and time flexibility.  Teachers were encouraged to participate in workshops, seminars, faculty development programmes. The registration fees and traveling expenses were reimbursed by the college and they were given duty leave for the same.  Faculty was encouraged to register for research by providing library facilities, modern laboratory facilities, chemicals required for research purposes, adjustment in lectures, computer and internet facilities, leave of absence and any other help that they require.  A number of activities including a Community Service Day was organized by the Social Awareness Cell of the college to reach out to those who have been disowned by our society and to develop the moral values of students.

 Students were given the opportunity to participate in international advanced training programmes with foreign universities through our international exchange programme with St Mary s College of Business and Economics, California, U.S.A.  Industrial visits to various companies and research centres were organized for students of different departments.  The Placement Cell established effective contacts with various organizations with a view to assisting the students in securing jobs and arranging interviews for the students.  Through the Nature Club activities awareness about environment and issues of conservation was initiated.  Financially backward students were provided various schemes such as fee concessions, fee payment on installments, book bank and Earn while you learn, amongst others.

Department of Commerce

 Conducted tests/ assignments for F.Y.B.Com. (Commerce-1), S.Y.B.Com. (Commerce II) and S.Y.B.Com. (Advertising).

 Project work was given to T.Y.B.Com. students in the subject of Export Marketing and S.Y.B.Com. in the subject of Advertising.

Department of Economics

 Tests were conducted in the subject of Economics for F.Y B.Com. , S.Y. B.Com., F.Y. B.M.S., S.Y.B.M.S., F.Y.B.Com. Financial Market and F.Y.B.Com. Accounts and Finance students.

 Test Series was conducted for T.Y.B.Com.  Organized Guidance Lecture for T.Y.B.Com. students in Business Economics (Paper III) on 5th February, 2011. Resource Person: Dr. Radhika Lobo, Associate Professor, Department of Economics, Birla College of Arts, Science and Commerce, Kalyan.

 Additional Lectures were conducted for Business Economics III for T.Y.B.Com. Number of lectures were increased to 4 per week from the University prescribed three.

 !Project Exhibition on Environment was conducted by F.Y B.Com. students on 3rd February, 2011 under the subject of E.V.S.

 Students from F.Y.B.Com. were encouraged to give presentations on different topics from the subject Foundation Course and Environmental Studies.

 Students from S.Y.B.Com. were encouraged to give presentations in different topics in the subject of Foundation Course.

 Group discussion on case studies was conducted for F.Y B.Com. students in the subject of Business Economics I and E.V.S..

 Organised Industrial Visit to Technova Imaging Systems Pvt. Ltd., Taloja on 18th September, 2011

Department of Accountancy

 Conducted test series in the subject of Financial Accounting for S.Y.B.Com., F.Y.B.Com. and T.Y.B.Com. Accounts and Finance, Management Accounting for S.Y B.Com. Accounts and Finance students, Cost Accounting for T.Y.B.Com. Accounts and Finance students.

 Organized Guidance Lecture for T.Y.B.Com. students in the subject of Accountancy on 10th February, 2011. Resource person: C. A Yogesh Patel, Head of the Department, Accountancy, S.K. Somaiya College, Vidya Vihar, Mumbai.

 Problems book on Financial Accounting, Management Accounting and Cost Accounting were prepared by teachers and supplied to the students at the time of admission. The students were required to bring them to the class room every day so that no time is wasted in dictation of problems. Copies of these notes are also available in the library.

Department of Computer Science (C.S.) and Information Technology (I.T.)

 Test series was conducted for the benefit of the students.  Guardian Teachers were appointed for underperforming students.  Parents of students in the Attendance Defaulter list were called to discuss measures to improve their attendance.

 Extra lectures were arranged for the students for solving problems.  Project work of T.Y.B.Sc. C.S. and T.Y.B.Sc.I.T. were started as soon as S.Y.B.Sc.C.S. and S.Y.B.Sc.I.T. exams were over so that students could complete the project before regular lectures start.

 To help students in project, project guides were appointed.  Industrial Visit was organized for T.Y. B.Sc. C.S. students from 3rd September to 10th September, 2010 at Chandigarh.

Department of B.Com. Accounts and Finance

 Conducted tests for F.Y., S.Y. and T.Y. B.Com. Accounts and Finance students.

 Organised Industrial visit for F.Y., S.Y. and T.Y. B.Com. Accounts and Finance students to Chandigarh, Manali and Rohatang.

 Organised Guest lecture in the subject of Financial Market Operations for S.Y. B.Com. Accounts and Finance students. Resource person Mr. D.K Gupta, Head , Training and Research of Inter connected stock exchange of Vashi, Navi Mumbai.

 Assignments and projects were given to F.Y, S.Y and T.Y. B.Com. Accounts and Finance students.

 Parents teaching interaction session was organized for F.Y., S.Y., and T.Y. B.Com. Accounts and Finance students.

 Extra lectures were arranged in the Subject of Financial Accounting and Taxation for T.Y. B.Com. Accounts and Finance students.

 Advance learners were given guidance and were also made to solve university question papers.

 Extra lectures were conducted for T.Y. B.Com. Accounts and Finance - V semester during summer vacations. Time table and teaching plan was prepared for these lectures.

 Guest lecture was conducted for T.Y. B.Com. Accounts and Finance VI semester in the subject of !Principles of Management .

Department of B.M.S.

 Parent Teacher Interaction for T.Y.B.M.S. was organized on 7th August, 2010.

 Class tests were conducted in various subjects of F.Y.B.M.S., S.Y.B.M.S. and T.Y.B.M.S.

 Special Lectures were conducted for T.Y.B.M.S. by chairpersons of Board of Studies for various subjects like Special Studies in Marketing, Service Sector Management, Business Ethics and Corporate Social Responsibility, and Special Studies in Finance.

 Career Guidance session was conducted for T.Y.B.M.S.  Career Guidance in Finance was conducted for T.Y.B.M.S.  Guest Lecture was conducted for T.Y.B.M.S. in the subject of "Retail Management# by Prof. Deepa Makkad from Western College, Sanpada.  Guest Lectures were conducted for T.Y.B.M.S. in the subject !IMTP by Dr. Rajesh Arora.

 Guest Lectures were conducted for T.Y.B.M.S. in the subject " International Finance# by Prof. Govind Somani  Guest Lectures conducted for T.Y.B.M.S. in the subject !Entrepreneurship Development and Small Scale Industries by Pradeep Gupte.  Mock Viva was organized for T.Y.B.M.S. in December, 2010 by Deepa Makkad from Western College, Sanpada and Dr. Kaustubh Sontakke from PIMSR.

 Industrial Visit was organized for T.Y.B.M.S. in January, 2011 to Chandigarh- Manali.

 Guardian Teachers were appointed for under - performing students.

Department of English

 Tutorials were conducted for the F.Y.B.Com. students in Business Communication.

 Presentations were taken for F.Y.B.Com., F.Y.B.M.S., F.Y.B.Com. Accounts and Finance and F.Y.B.Com. Financial Markets.

 Projects were given for F.Y.B.M.S., F.Y.B.Com. Accounts and Finance in Effective Communication and Business Communication during the first semester.

 Assignments were given in Business Communication and Communication Skills for the F.Y.B.Com., F.Y.B.Com. Accounts and Finance and F.Y.B.Com. Financial Markets.

 Bridge Course on writing and speaking skills was conducted for the vernacular medium students.

 For F.Y.B.M.S. group discussions and debates were conducted.  Remedial lectures were conducted for weak students.  Students were taken to the Language Lab and were acquainted with the recorded modules.

Department of Biotechnology

 Parent Teacher Meeting was arranged for F.Y., S.Y., and T.Y. B.Sc. Biotechnology.

 Written test series were conducted once a week to monitor the students understanding of the subject and to inculcate the habit of parallel study.

 Students of M.Sc. and T.Y.B.Sc. Biotechnology visited various research institutes and industries to enhance their knowledge on new research and industrial techniques.

 Guardian teachers were appointed for weak students and a meeting with the parents was organized each term to discuss overall academic performance in college.

 Students of first and second year attended summer training in various institutions, hospitals, pathology laboratories and manufacturing units.

 Guidance Lecture for T.Y.B.Sc. Biotechnology students on theory and practical paper pattern on 8th February, 2011 by Dr. Anupama KHarshal from K.C. College.

 Special lectures were conducted for the subject of Biochemistry for T.Y. students.

 Guest lecture on Entrepreneurship in Biotechnology was conducted by Mr. Sandeep Saxena, C.E.O., ACTON on 28th September, 2010 and Prof. S.N. Jogdand, Lecturer, Department of Microbiology, K.B.P. College on 17th September, 2010.

Department of Mathematics

 Topic wise tests were conducted for students of F.Y. and S.Y. B.Sc. Computer Science.

 Tutorials as per university were conducted in each topic for the F.Y.B.Com., F.Y. and S.Y. B.Sc. Information Technology students.

 Assignments and class tests were conducted for internal marks for the students of F.Y.B.M.S, F.Y., S.Y.B.Com. Accounts and Finance and F.Y.B.Com. Financial Market.

 Special Lectures were conducted for weak students of F.Y.B.Sc.Computer Science in the subject of Differential Equations and Calculus.

 Bridge course for the non math s students of F.Y.B.M.S., F.Y.B.Sc. Biotechnology, F.Y.B.Com. Accounts and Finance and F.Y.B.Com. Financial Market were conducted.

 Advance Learners were encouraged to solve problems involving higher mathematical abilities.

Department of Law

 Topic wise tests were conducted for students.  Assignments, tests and project work on practical aspects of law were given to the professional course students of Accounts and Finance and B.M.S.

 Use of latest journals and books in allied laws, available in the library, was encouraged.

 Field surveys were conducted for the collection of legal knowledge from experts.

 Conducted Test Series for F.Y. and S.Y.B.Com. in the subject of Economics, Communication Skills and also Viva was conducted.

 Assignments were given for different subjects.  Students participated in an online Stock Market competition conducted by rd "Dalal Street Investment Journal Street# on 3 February, 2011.  A certificate course for the students of F.Y.B.Com. (Financial Markets) was conducted in the month of March, 2011 in association with Interconnected stock Exchange –Vashi, Navi Mumbai.  An Advanced Course in Derivatives for S.Y.B.Com. Financial Markets was conducted in the month of March, 2011 in association with ISE-Vashi, Navi Mumbai.

 Creating Employment Opportunities A Placement Cell functions in the college for counseling the students regarding higher studies and employment opportunities. It is mainly responsible for establishing effective contacts with various organizations with a view to assisting the students in securing jobs. The cell hosted a number of campus interviews for the benefit of students and succeeded in attracting corporate big-wigs like: Wipro BPO, Wipro, Iris Business Pvt. Ltd., Wipro Technologies, Patni, Real Team,Tech Mahindra and LNT.

 Providing Community Service

The Social Awareness Cell of our college makes continual efforts to sensitize students towards the needs of the society. A wide range of social development initiatives were supported this year: organized a "Community Service Day# , developed software, !registration database for a N.G.O- !People for Animals Navi Mumbai , Anti Tobacco Rally , lecture on Malaria: Prevention and Symptoms, AIDS awareness rally , a !Donation Drive wherein !PRATHAM - a N.G.O. for orphans and destitute children was the main beneficiary and the like.

We also have a functional N.S.S. The main aim of N.S.S. is to bring about social transformation by utilizing youth vitality through various development activities. The N.S.S. unit of our college has taken many social service initiatives in areas like: Tree Plantation Programme, Street Play on effects of Alcoholism, Lecture on Leprosy Awareness, Pulse Polio Camp, Blood Donation Camp, Energy Conservation Programme, AIDS Awareness Rally, Residential camp in Shirdon, wherein a number of activities were carried out.

Through our annual college magazine !Spectrum we have made an attempt to highlight and create more awareness on burning social issues of particular importance to the youth. The theme of the current issue of !Spectrum’ is !Impact of Social Networking on Society .

 Overall Personality Development Student life can be enriched by encouraging participation in extra-curricular activities which help in holistic development of students.

Personality Development Classes are conducted out in the college. In the academic year 2010-2011, 21 students took admission. Sessions were conducted every week for 3 hours on various aspects of personality development. These sessions were conducted by Mr. Stanley Anthony of Advent Training Inc.

Cultural Committee We encourage our students to participate in co-curricular and extra-curricular activities outside the campus which brings out the students potential in cultural, creative and physical aspects. In the current academic year our students won many prizes in many inter-collegiate fests in the city of Mumbai.

Gymkhana Physical fitness, leadership and corporate discipline are valuable assets for active citizenship and successful career. The Gymkhana Committee of our college aims at promoting these qualities among the students. We have sufficient facilities in our campus for both field events and indoor games for the students to practice and to conduct inter-collegiate tournaments and coaching camps. Students of our college have set up an impressive and consistent record of performance in almost all games and sports. We also encourage and recognize the students who attain individual honours on our Annual Sports Day. Advanced skills and tactics are imparted to our students by inviting eminent coaches.

Magazine and other Publications Report !Spectrum , our college annual magazine, aims to inform, inspire, entertain and create awareness on a number of current social issues to a diverse readership. The theme of Spectrum 2010-11 is: !Impact of Social Networking on Society .

The News Bulletin is a bi-annual publication which reflects the activities of various departments and associations carried out during the year.

ASSOCIATIONS Economics Association The objective of Economics Association is to attract and enhance student s interest and enthusiasm towards economics by organizing various events in the said subject. The following activities were arranged in the said academic year:

 Initiative !SMILE to lend a helping hand to the children upto the age group of 14 years by providing them with anything (clothes, toys, books, stationery, gifts, prizes for games, cultural activities, goodies and the like) that can bring smile on their faces and happiness in their lives. NGO s covered under SMILE: Pratham, Mumbai Education Initiative, (Child labourers, Orphans) visited on 18th September, 2010, Kalyani Mahila and Balak Seva Sanstha (Mentally challenged orphans) visited on 18th September, 2010.

 Inter-collegiate Debate/Paper Presentation Competition on the topic !Relevance of Economics in Practical Life on December 20, 2010.

Management Association

Management Association was formed with an aim to help its members have practical exposure on management related issues. This year the association organized the following activities for the students:

th  Conducted Article Writing Competition on 25 August, 2010.  Lecture on !Stress Management in College Life by Mrs. Varsha Thakar on 9th September, 2010.

 Mobile Photography Competition was organized in January, 2011. 88 students participated in the competition. Three winners and two consolation prizes were declared.

Biotechnology Association

Biotechnology Association seeks to educate members about various aspects of the biotechnology through meetings, seminars, guest lectures and various other events. This year the association organized the following activities for the students:

Computer Association

The objective of Computer Association is to raise awareness on the latest developments in the field of computers and equip students with skills that will enable them to be updated with the latest technology. The following events were conducted in the current academic year:

th  Debate Competition on Electronic Surveillance: Good or Bad? on 7 August, 2010. st  Web Hunt Competition on 31 August , 2010. th  Elocution Competition on 27 November, 2010 on the topic: !Impact of Computers in Today s Life .  Seminar organized on 12th February, 2011 on the topic: !Customer Relationship Management .

 The association is adjoined with two NGOs namely !Nanhi Kali (We have offered them help in terms of monetary aspects for girl welfare ) and !People for Animals ( For rescue of animals , they are provided by a software implemented by us) .

Literary Association

The activities of the Literary Association help students enhance their creativity, confidence and personality. The following activities were conducted in the year 2010-11: nd  !The View point of a poet: A Poetry Interpretation Competition on 22 July, 2010.

 Debate competition on the topic: Career in Public Sector or Private Sector on 18th August, 2010.

Marathi Vangayamaya Mandal

Marathi Association was created with the objective of creating more awareness on the cultural heritage of Marathi community by promoting its culture, music, literature and social traditions. The following activities were conducted in the year 2010-11: th  Organized a guest lecture on 13 January 2011 by Mr. Madhav Jogh, a socialite from Shirdon village, on the topic "Biography of Krantiveer Vasudev Balwant Phadke# and !Social and moral role of a child towards mother . th  Organized a Cultural Festival- !SANSKAR on 17 January, 2011, which included performing events such as marathi traditional dances like lavani,

gondhal, marathi theatre plays along with mono acting and mimicry. Marathi poet V.V.Shirwadkar alias "Kusumagraj#. A Lecture on "Importance of Language in day to day life in # was also organized. Speaker Mr. Prathmesh Soman highlighted the need of Marathi language in Maharashtra in various sectors and requested all to make others aware about it. Essay writing competition was also conducted to enhance the knowledge related to Marathi language and culture.

Women s Cell endeavours to make students aware about gender equality. The following activities were conducted in the year 2010-11:

 Social Research was conducted on the topic, "Study of the Socio-Economic Condition of staff attendants working at Dr. K.M .Vasudevan Pillai s Campus# at New Panvel#.  Four students of our college participated in the State Level Inter-collegiate Essay Competition 2010-11 organised by Anti Dowry Movement, Mumbai.

rd Mathematics and Statistics Association conducted "Maths Symposia on 3 December, 2010. A Quiz Competition in Mathematics and Statistics was organized on 1st September, 2010 and the winners of this competition were encouraged to

Entrepreneurship Development Programme Cell

The EDP Cell was established with the objective of creating awareness on entrepreneurship among the students and inculcates entrepreneurial spirit and culture to motivate budding entrepreneurs. The following activities were conducted in the year 2010-11:

Counseling Cell

The Counseling Centre has a trained counselor to address student queries and problems. Students who are identified with some behavioral problems, mental tensions, career decision-making problems etc. are referred to the counselor. This centre is open for all the students during the working hours.

 Respect the environment Nature Club

The main objective of the nature club is to create awareness about environment and issues of conservation, initiate conservation action and conservation education activities. Nature Club members organized the following activities in the academic year 2010-11:

 Seminar on Wild Life and Animal Welfare on 18th September, 2010.  Conducted a Poster Making Competition on !Global Warning and Recycling on 12th August, 2010.

 Members of Nature Club, Mariya Panvelwala from S.Y.B.Com. and Arushi Dube from F.Y. B.Com. Accounts and Finance on 7th Septemeber, 2010 rescued an injured cat and dog from Panvel police station , as informed by the officials, and admitted them to IDA Hospital in Vashi, Navi Mumbai.

 An ongoing activity of the club members is to collect leftover food from hotels and bakeries and feeding stray animals. This activity started on 4th December, 2010.

4. Interdisciplinary Programs Started:-

 We are affiliated to the University of Mumbai which does not allow us to offer inter-disciplinary programmes, but we do offer students add on courses in computers.  We encourage students to participate in the international exchange programme with St. Mary s College of Business and Economics, California, U.S.A.  A certificate course for the students of F.Y.B.Com. (Financial Markets) was conducted in the month of March, 2011 in association with Interconnected Stock Exchange –Vashi, Navi Mumbai.  An Advanced Course in Derivatives for S.Y.B.Com. Financial Markets was conducted in the month of March, 2011 in association with ISE-Vashi, Navi Mumbai.

5. Examination reforms Implemented:

 Standardized Format of Moderators Report introduced: A standard format of moderators report was introduced from the current academic year.  Examination Scheduled for the entire term was prepared in the beginning of each term Teachers and students were informed about the exams well ahead of each term.  Question papers were set through the method of Centralized Question Paper Setting (CQPS) under the guidance of the Head of the Department.  Question papers were submitted to the Head of the Department who checks for the portion completion, university pattern and format of the question papers.

 Photocopies were taken in the presence of the Head of the Department and maintained.  Synoptic answer papers were prepared and assessment is done based on the synoptic answers.  Assessment was done through Centralized Assessment Programme (CAP) to avoid errors.  Results were displayed within ten days of the examinations and marksheet distribution within five days of the results.  Transparencies in examinations were maintained through Re-verifications of papers and by allowing students are allowed to see their answer papers.

 Computer learning sessions conducted for teaching and non-teaching staff to acquire computer skills.

 The Social Awareness Cell of our college makes continual efforts to sensitize students towards the needs of the society. As part of its social outreach commitment, following are the social contributions for the current academic year. th  Organized a "Community Service Day# on 18 December, 2010 at Dr. K.M. Vasudevan Pillai s Campus, New Panvel. Inmates of Ramakrishna Niketan Vridhashram, Shantivan, tribal children from nearby rural areas, inmates from Pratham Orphanage Panvel were the main beneficiaries of the programme. A number of activities such as cultural programmes, games, computer awareness programmes for the tribal children were arranged besides the afternoon meal. A general health check-up camp for the public, in collaboration with Life-Line Hospital, Panvel,blood donation drive with the help of Sai Blood Bank , Aids and Leprosy Awareness programmes were the other projects organized for the day. Pillai s Group of Institutions made generous contributions, in cash and kind, to ALERT India, Association for Leprosy Education Rehabilitation and Treatment, India, CHIRAG, College of Social Work, Pratham Orphanage, Panvel and Ramakrishna Niketan Vridhshram, Shantivan.

 Social Awareness Cell, in association with Computer Science Department, developed software, !registration database for a N.G.O. - !People for Animals Navi Mumbai , this N.G.O. works for the rescue and rehabilitation of animals and birds. th  !Anti Tobacco Rally was organized on 16 September, 2010 in the adjoining areas of Panvel.  Students from B.Sc. Biotechnology participated in the AIDS awareness rally st on 1 December, 2010, organized by Jyothi s Terminal Care Centre situated at Kalamboli. Jyothis Care Centre is an organization working for HIV- AIDS in Mumbai along with Mumbai District Aids Control Organization (MDAC).

 "If service is your habit, let s meet.", a campaign regarding contribution towards betterment of society, reducing present deficiency existing in the area of platelets and blood donation in India, was organized on 15th February, 2011, by Social Awareness Cell of Pillai s College of Arts Commerce and Science in association with RON- a N.G.O that acts to keep and inculcate service mentality among youth by various activities so that they are trained to serve humanity. Dr. Aarti, Asst. Medical Social Worker from Advanced Centre for Treatment, Research and Education in Cancer (ACTREC), with her team members collected 50 samples of blood from the college students. 600 students have voluntarily registered their names, for blood donation in actual need of crisis. The students enrolling their names will be contacted in case of any disaster or emergencies for blood donation. rd  Organised a !Donation Drive on 23 February, 2011 wherein !PRATHAM - a N.G.O. for orphans and destitute children was the main beneficiary. 40 pairs of shoes were donated to the boys at the PRATHAM s 43

Boys Shelter and 240 long books were donated to the girls at the PRATHAM s Girls Shelter, located at Panvel. Along with this, 100kgs of rice and 25kgs of dal were also donated to PRATHAM s shelter at Panvel.  The main aim of N.S.S. is to bring about social transformation by utilizing youth vitality through various development activities. The N.S.S. unit of our college has taken many social service initiatives in areas like:

 Tree Plantation Programme: Conducted a Tree Plantation Programme in Sant Sai Baba Govt. School, New Panvel on 12.8.10. Planted 50 saplings.

 Street Play on effects of Alcoholism: Conducted a Street Play by Smitha Patil Street Theatre on 17.8.2010 on the effects of alcoholism and drug abuse.

 Lecture on Leprosy Awareness: Conducted a lecture on 18.8.2010 on Leprosy awareness by ALERT-INDIA NGO, the key speaker was Ms. Ispita De, a member of the NGO. The Programme was followed by donations accounting a total of Rs. 20,849.

 Pulse Polio Camp: Conducted a 7 days Pulse Polio Vaccination Camp from 21.8.2010-28.8.2010 in association with Rural Hospital, Raigad.

 Blood Donation Camp: Conducted a Blood Donation Camp on 27.8.2010 in the Old Canteen wherein the total blood bottles donated were 202 and stood First in Raigad district and for this received Trophy, Cash Prize and Shawl.

 Energy Conservation Programme: Conducted an Energy Conservation Programme in the campus wherein boards regarding the same topic were stuck in each class by the volunteers.

 AIDS Awareness Rally: Conducted an AIDS Awareness Rally in New Panvel as a contribution to the World AIDS Day on 1.12.2010. The rally went with slogans, banners and pamphlets in every area of New Panvel. 44

 Kotak Education Foundation’s lecture: Conducted a lecture on Placement by Kotak Education Foundation on 8.12.2010, wherein the students were informed about the different career opportunities available with Kotak.

 Admission forms are available on web site www.mes.ac.in.  Entire admission process computerized. Once a student is enrolled his / her entire information data is stored and used for receipts, identity cards and students list. This software has been developed by Software Development Department of our college.  Examination schedules and results are updated on the college website.

 Increase in infrastructure facility is an ongoing process at our campus. We have a six storied building and being a growing institution; augmentation of infrastructural facilities is a never-ending process.

 Computers are updated by our hardware department.  Biotechnology Instrumentation lab was upgraded with new instruments.  Gymkhana facilities were upgraded with better sports kit.  Library resources were augmented with newer editions and titles.

 We have introduced Biometric machine for recording the attendance of teaching and non- teaching staff from the current academic year.  Smart cards are also in use for attendance of teaching and non- teaching staff.  We have introduced a software programme ENTAB which takes care of all the details of the student s including admission, academic performance and feedback. For attendance monitoring of student we have separate software programmes.  Upgraded computers and laser printers are available for students and teachers.  Internet and Intranet services are provided.  VSAT and LCD presentations are made by teachers to improve the quality of teaching.

28. Computer and internet access and training to teachers and students:

 Computer and internet facility is available free of charge for students.  Teachers and students are encouraged to use computers to improve their presentation skills.  They are also encouraged to make use of internet facilities in order to update themselves. Internet facility is available free of cost.  Teachers make use of these facilities to prepare question papers, mark sheets, attendance records and to make annual/term-end reports.  Students also make extensive use of the computers for making presentations, project work, reference work by internet surfing etc. S.Y.B.Com. students

 Alumni Association has maintained formal membership register, minutes book and other registration documents. 32. Health Services:

 We have a Health club that creates health awareness amongst students and staff by conducting programmes such as yoga sessions, talks on health issues, blood donation programmes and the like.  We have a health center in the premises and a doctor on call facility is available.  First aid boxes and wheel chairs are available.  We have a canteen committee in order to keep a check and improve the functioning of the canteen. Student representatives are included in the same. Regular meetings are held for prompt redressal of canteen related problems. Canteen Committee received 2 complaints in the current academic year which were resolved.

34. Incentives to outstanding sports persons:

 Participating students get concessions in the attendance and we conduct extra tests for them.  Health Diet is given to Sportsmen during practice sessions and tournaments.  Kits are provided free of cost to all students who have participated in sports. And many availed of fee concessions upto 100 percent.  All students participating in any sports events are provided with transport facility.  For university level winners, 10 marks are added to their total marks at the final examination.  Additional examinations are conducted for those students who could not appear for their regular examination due to tournaments which coincided with the same dates.

 Our college organizes annual residential sports camp to train and motivate our students to participate in inter-collegiate as well as intra-collegiate sports tournaments.  We also host tournaments at all levels in our college campus. 38. Development program for non-teaching staff:

 Non-teaching staff who are interested in pursuing education are encouraged and the management supports such candidates financially.

 Our I.T. Department helps interested non-teaching staff to update their computer knowledge.

 For the benefit of our non-teaching staff, we have procured general awareness and knowledge enhancement books for the library.

 Non- teaching staff and grade IV employees can take loan at lower interest rate from the society.

 Planning of examination schedules for regular, ATKT and additional exams, evaluation schedule, moderation schedule, date of result of examination for each academic year is done before the ending of previous academic year. Execution of such advanced planning is done through a well functioning Exam Cell.

 Our Centralized Research Forum is a model unit because our entire sister institutes can pool in their knowledge, finance and efforts to undertake research in various fields.

 Our college has a Grievance cell under which regular meetings are conducted and the grievances are sorted out at the earliest. We have a suggestion box located in front of the Vice-Principal s office. An email id is provided to students and staff so as to contact the professor-in-charge.

 We give stress on social objectives and we achieve these objectives through the N.S.S, Social Awareness Cell, Euridite Education Mission, Soroptomist International Association for Women and Nature Club.

 Regular up gradation of laboratories is ensured by procuring latest version computers for computer labs and latest technology based equipments for Biotechnology laboratories.

In the current academic year, our students visited companies such as Genentech- Biotechnology Company, Adobe- Software Company, Clorox- Manufacturer of Consumer products, AT and T Park- Baseball Giants Club and Stadium, Apple Headquarters, Intel Museum-Technology Company, Yahoo, John Muir Hospital- Medical Center, Stanford University Campus.  Our institution also has membership with the following organizations:  Consumer Guidance Society Of India  Indian Merchants Association

 This academic year saw PCACS being reaccredited with an !A grade by the National Accreditation and Assessment Council (NAAC).

 !Pillai s Group of Institutes received the !Best Institute Award , from !Shri Ramsheth Thakur Vikas Mandal and Panvel Taluka and City Congress Committee in the month of January, 2011.  As a part of MIS, our central office has implemented the !Campus Care software for different modules such as admissions, fees, I.D.Cards, and other relevant details except examinations and attendance. We will be introducing the software for examinations and attendance after these modules are modified to suit our requirement.

1. To begin lectures on the first working day i.e. 09.06.2011. 2. To ensure 100% utilization of lecture timings. 3. To prepare and publish yearly academic calendar before the beginning of the Academic year. 4. To regularly update infrastructure to provide students with facilities of international standards. 5. To ensure professional development of teachers through workshops, seminars and training programmes. 6. To introduce more innovative teaching methods such as mock interviews, skits and field surveys. 7. To encourage teachers to make use of modern teaching methods such as audio visual screens, simulation and the like. 8. To provide extra coaching to weak students and help them improve through systems such as student mentoring and guardian teachers. 9. To arrange guest lectures by university examiners to provide guidelines for university exams. 10. To arrange talks by corporate guests to help prepare students for interviews. 11. To take initiatives to increase the interests of guardians towards their wards performance by arranging meetings. 12. To identify and redress student grievances through the grievance cell. 13. To conduct greater number of seminars and workshops of National and International Standards.
