The most carefully researched and thoughtful book on the subject that I have readBy Fifth Generation TexanJudith Hand's "Shift" is the most carefully researched and most thoughtful book I have read on the emergence of warfare and how we might end it. I hope Judith Hand's book reaches a wide audience.2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A PROFOUND EYE-OPENER PRACTICAL PLAN FOR ACTIONBy Arthur W. CampbellDr. Hand has written an extraordinary book. Neither shrill, simplistic, nor a stalking horse for partisan politics, her clear, vivid prose presents solid scientific bases for understanding the anthropological origins of war and its outmoded but seeming irresistible attraction to the human species. She’s gathered, organized, and synthesized decades of study and writing in this field. Dr. Hand then proceeds to outline a multi-dimensional but definitely doable strategy for ending war on this planet— in what could be the last clear chance our nuclear civilization has to avoid self-annihilation. Citing cogent examples of war-ending cultures, she also provides a wealth of current organizations and practical tips by which one can help propel the vital SHIFT toward ending war. A former member of the U.S. Air Force, federal prosecutor, and now law professor, I urge this book for anyone wanting to make their lives— even on a part-time basis— count for something worthwhile. Sincerely, Art Campbell2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Ending War ForeverBy Clarence WilliamsIn Shift: The Beginning of War, the Ending of War, Judith Hand has given us a warning and thrown us a lifeline. and the all-consuming race to be better prepared for them than others have brought us to the brink of ending human existence. Many of us have been waiting a long time to read a book like this. Only a biologist can understand the dangers of ignoring implacable elements of evolved human nature, and only a tireless advocate for humanity can extract hope from the mess. Judith demonstrates that the current century blesses us with a rare opportunity, but we must follow her outlines to a world free of war or it may be too late. I heed her rallying cry and hope you join us in ending war…forever! Clarence “Sonny” Williams Sr. Executive (Ret.), Commercial Insurance Industry

“What if someone could convince you that we actually have the power to permanently end war? What if someone could convince you that once we resolve to make that happen, we could free ourselves from war in two generations or less?” With those words, evolutionary biologist Judith Hand opens her exploration of why we make war, when we started making war, and why and how we can, if we choose, move forward into a future without war. In accessible, clear language, Hand marshals knowledge and insight from biological, cultural, and political sciences to persuasively make her case. The depth and breadth of knowledge covered makes it essential reading for anyone interested in war and . The notion that we might actually be able to abolish war may seem—may in fact be—utopian, but Dr. Hand explains why and how this achievement is possible. Shift: The Beginning of War, The Ending of War demonstrates that the current century blesses us with a rare but narrowing opportunity to achieve what generations before us could not. As one reader wrote: “Judith Hand invites each and every one of us who cares about the future of the human family to take part in this historical psychological, social, and institutional shift toward resolving differences through law with justice instead of bullets and bombs.
